You think that is going too far - but for most people actually they would prefer to be safe. No vaccine possible by then, and the best drug treatment we have so far (remdesivir) is not an actual cure. So cancelling something that would normally lead to a mass gathering is unwise.
Celebrating our Independence is unwise. gotcha.

Maybe we can have a coronavirus day instead and celebrate by staying at home shivering in fear. With a mask on.

No one is preventing you from celebrating the fourth. That celebration will out of necessity, depending on where you are, be different.

Of course, such a stupid move would allow certain people to claim how much more testing is being done, wouldn't it? Most epidemiologists were stunned by this basic error of commission by an allegedly world-class organization with no history of this sort of thing. This is the type of stuff that happens when someone declares war on the federal government. Nobody should be surprised.

This fish rots from the head.
 Yes....because there have never been standards to follow in the medical field. Maybe they need a Six Sigma class? I bet Fauci can get it all worked out....unless he changes his mind, again.

Really really good effort in the Salt Lake City Tribune about what we know about superspreader events:
How the coronavirus spreads in those everyday places we visit
https://www.sltrib.com/news/2020/05/23/your-guide-how/
t hasn’t even been five months since health officials in Wuhan, China, reported unusual pneumonia cases to the World Health Organization.

But those five months have been the most active in the history of epidemiology. Since that report, we’ve learned so much about the coronavirus. One of the most important lessons? How the disease is spread.

In particular, so-called superspreading events seem to be a major cause of infections. One London School of Hygiene analysis suggested that 80% of the secondary transmissions were caused by just 10% of infected people. In other words, if you want to avoid getting COVID-19, one of your major focuses should be avoiding a superspreading event.

So as Utahns leave their homes and reengage with society, we thought now would be a good time to scour the research to note where these events have been documented and where they haven’t. We can also learn about the circumstances that led to each superspreading event, and do our best to avoid them.

The result is the following compendium, in alphabetical order, of public places and the lessons we can learn.
Those places:
  1. Bars and clubs
  2. Buffets
  3. Buses
  4. Choirs
  5. Church
  6. Grocery stores
  7. Gyms
  8. Malls
  9. Offices
  10. Planes
  11. Polling places
  12. Schools
  13. Sports venues and stadiums
Great details on what we do know and what does not seem to be a problem (WI polling places did not work out too badly, for example). Also discusses ways to mitigate and reduce risk.

So that list tells me that we can open all the restaurants and every store that’s not in a mall.

You should actually read the article - it has lots of the situations that turned into superspreader events, and what seems to work. It in general is not saying don't have to practice sensible measures of SD - but it is pointing out the real situations that have led to mass infection events.

But if the restaurant has outdoor seating or really good ventilation and separation between tables inside, and practices care with its staff/servers that does not seem to be a place where superspreading events have happened.

Right.
Not zero risk, simply preventing mass infection spread.

We all want these various services and businesses back into some degree of operation, but clearly we need to prevent mass infection spread. That requires some rules and their enforcement, but only to the extent that citizens don't voluntarily participate in minimizing infection risk.

Just heard last night that when my son and my mother stopped in SC to see my niece and nephew who both live and work there, they had dinner out one night. One of three tables at the restaurant, they ate outside, though in a narrow alley, so not exactly fully out in the open. My son was horrified when the server came without a mask and stood over them...my 83 yr old mom was oblivious. It not only was the server, but what did that say about the kitchen? My son said very few people had masks on in the streets, in various places where people were indeed congregating. Maybe they'll get lucky and the virus will go away magically.

The mask, sadly, has turned into a political football. And you can't explain to these people that it's no different than thousands of laws and mores we follow everyday to keep our fellow citizens safe. Stopping at a red light comes to mind. Not throwing a used tissue on a coworker's desk is another.

People have been shot over these things. And of, course, you get the screaming lefty Karens who scream at people in parks if they're not wearing them. America's culture is unable to handle pandemics.

Thanks fellas! Regarding the WaPo article that's obviously making the rounds, our company is healthy, and we've seen worse economic conditions for our little company. We're 20 years old now, and are fiscally conservative as many of you know. We'll weather the losses just fine...and everyone sans my brother and I are still on full salary. Sales team and our tasting room manager are still at home, working on new projects.

Catocin Creek that keep appearing in these pieces and I don't know why---- while lovely people-----keep leaving out that they were bought, at least in part, by Constellation Brands. They'll be fine, and are in no way representative of small distillers with no access to market. Their parent company ensures that.

What is really screwing about 80% of distilleries and 90% of breweries is that they all rely on their tasting rooms to keep the doors open. THAT is why they're in deep trouble.

So you're on board with citizens suing Trump for his mistakes, too? Or does this desire for prosecution only apply to Dem run States.

For whatever its worth, I used to know Jaime Windon and her sister Jessi very well. Haven't seen or talked to her in years, but so happy for her success. She was always a bold one, in a good way, smart too. I hope her business survives.

So if masks work why social distancing?

If social distancing works why masks?

If masks work why are small businesses forced to stay closed?

If masks don't wok why are we forced to wear them?
