HEATHER COX RICHARDSON

Today the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee demonstrated that they will actively fight back against Republicans’ false narratives. House Republicans, led by Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan (R-OH), have insisted they had evidence of the “weaponization” of the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation against Republicans. Jordan has claimed to have “dozens and dozens of whistleblowers…talking about what is going on, the political nature at the Justice Department.”

These allegations that Republicans are victims of a “deep state” follow Trump’s insistence that the FBI’s investigation of the ties between his 2016 campaign and Russian operatives was “a witch hunt” led by Democrats. Jordan and other Republican members of Congress developed that same theme in their performances defending Trump during his first impeachment trial. Trump defenders continued to say on television and other media that they were victims of the FBI investigation of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

But now, in charge of the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, established under the Judiciary Committee, Jordan and the Republicans actually have to produce evidence of their allegations. So far, they have held one hearing. It was a fiasco as the Republicans’ witnesses, including Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), made rambling statements that rehashed old grievances without presenting any new evidence, and Democrats repeatedly accused Republicans of trying to use the powers of the government to advance political talking points.

Recently, Republicans have begun to release pieces of the private interviews they conducted with those claiming they could prove the FBI was persecuting Republicans. Rather than permit them to establish a false narrative, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and the top Democrat on the weaponization subcommittee, Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands), today released a deeply researched and footnoted 316-page report that shreds the Republicans’ story.

The report reveals the Republicans’ “dozens and dozens of whistleblowers” are, so far at least, three witnesses—whistleblower is actually a specific category and they do not meet that standard—who have left the FBI and have complained that the agency is biased against “conservatives.” Two of them lost their security clearances before they left, and while committee Republicans refused to show Democrats the men’s suspension notices, one revealed in his testimony that the notice arrived after he had improperly accessed documents from the FBI’s classified system. All three embrace a number of conspiracy theories. Under oath, they provided only right-wing accusations of bias without being able to attest to any first-hand knowledge of the things they alleged.

The witnesses did not come forward on their own; they were identified by former administrators in the Trump administration, including fervent Trump loyalists Kash Patel and Russell Vought. Patel provided money and legal services to two of the witnesses and found one of them a job at Vought’s right-wing think tank, the Center for Renewing America, after he left the FBI.

The witnesses were all fervent Trump supporters who were sympathetic to those involved in the January 6th attack. One of them claimed that the January 6th attack was a “set-up” and that it was “a larger #Democrat plan using their enforcement arm, the #FBI.” He described the FBI as “the Brown Shirt enforcers of the @DNC,” a reference to Nazi Storm Troopers. Another has repeatedly called for the FBI to be “defunded,” “dismantled,” “dissolved,” “aborted,” “abolished,” and “completely eliminated and eradicated from the federal government.”

In a section of the report titled “An Analysis of Witness Testimony Shows That Committee Republicans Are Working to Advance a Politically Motivated Messaging Campaign Unsupported by the Evidence,” Nadler and Plaskett show how the witness testimony directly rebutted the Republicans’ talking points. Under examination, the witnesses disproved that the Department of Justice was trying to pad its case numbers regarding domestic violent extremism, that it had diverted resources from child abuse cases to pursue January 6 offenders, and that the FBI had overreacted to threats of violence against school administrators and local political officials, all Republican talking points.

The Democrats provided extensive evidence to suggest that Patel was egging on the witnesses to help push Trump’s fight against the Justice Department, the FBI, and the Biden administration. Now, they said, it appears that he and his allies are trying to use the subcommittee in this same effort. The Democrats expressed “serious concerns” about the possible coordination between Patel and the Republican committee members.

They explained: Patel is currently a senior fellow at the Center for Renewing America (CRA), a MAGA think tank that pushed the House Republicans to establish the subcommittee. The CRA was founded by Christian nationalist Russell Vough—now working with the Republicans on their budget plan—and is funded by the Conservative Partnership institute (CPI), which is run by former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows and former senator Jim DeMint (R-SC).

Axios author Jonathan Swan described CPI as “a who’s-who of Trump’s former administration and the ‘America First’ movement,” “the hub of the hard right in Washington.” Their headquarters is where the right-wing extremist “Freedom Caucus” meets, and the notoriously stingy Trump authorized a $1 million donation to the CPI in 2021.

In short, the Democrats are suggesting that the House Republicans who established the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government are themselves trying to weaponize the government to advance the interests of Trump and the MAGA Republicans. Nadler and Plaskett quoted Jordan’s statement at the August 2022 Conservative Political Action Conference, when he promised that his investigation would “frame up the 2024 race when I hope and I think President Trump is going to run again and we need to make sure that he wins.”

The official Republican House Judiciary Twitter account responded vaguely: “Cherry-picked leaks. Partial transcripts. All to disparage brave whistleblowers. Democrats should be ashamed.”

But, just as they did with the Republicans’ reluctance to show the American people their budget plan, the Democrats are calling the Republicans’ bluff. “We urge Chairman Jordan to schedule the public testimony of these individuals without delay,” Nadler and Plaskett wrote. “The American public should be able to judge for themselves whether these witnesses or their allegations are remotely credible.”

A report from CPAC. Are you idiots going to nominate The Moron again?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... sidential/

"Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley stepped into the hallway after speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday to supporters asking for selfies and autographs — and, from others, a less friendly greeting.

“We love Trump, we love Trump!” a crowd around her started chanting. Some Haley supporters shouted her name back as the former U.N. ambassador escaped with staff to an elevator.

The dust-up showed the risks of taking the primary fight to what has clearly become Trump’s home turf. Though CPAC has long been seen as a big-tent forum for the conservative movement and a mandatory cattle call for presidential hopefuls, the annual conference has increasingly grown into a stomping ground for the 45th president and his “Make America Great Again” wing of the GOP. Trump will speak at the event Saturday.

“Remember, you’re not at CPAC, you’re at TPAC,” John Fredericks, a pro-Trump talk radio host broadcasting from the sidelines here, said in an interview Wednesday. He said potential 2024 rivals opted to skip the conference rather than risk getting booed or losing the straw poll. “We own this thing, it’s ours,” he said. “No Trump, no CPAC.”

This year’s lineup was heavy with Trump family members and acolytes — such as Lara Trump, Donald Trump Jr., former White House strategist Stephen K. Bannon, losing 2022 Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, Sens. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), and Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) — to the near-total exclusion of the party’s other voices.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who polls show as Trump’s biggest competitor for the 2024 primary though he has not yet announced whether he is running, opted to spend the week far away at his own events promoting his new book.

In past years, campaigns-in-waiting have organized to pack the event with supporters in the hopes of a strong showing in an informal survey of attendees, known as the CPAC straw poll. Trump beat DeSantis in last year’s straw poll 59 percent to 28 percent, and slightly widened his advantage at a CPAC in Texas last August, winning 64 percent to 24 percent.

Privately, Trump supporters acknowledge that anything less than a double-digit margin in this year’s poll would be an embarrassing result for the former president. As for DeSantis, Republican strategists including Karl Rove praised the governor for going his own way rather than contesting Trump in the CPAC straw poll.

Ronald Solomon, president of conservative product wholesaler “the MAGA Mall,” blanketed folding tables at the gathering with Trump-themed flags, lines of hats and other knickknacks. At the far end of the display, he had laid out a row of DeSantis caps. Those were not his big sellers, he explained. “It’s about 50 to one over DeSantis,” he said of Trump hat sales.

CPAC’s alignment with Trump, at a moment when his grip on the party appears less certain than before the GOP’s underwhelming performance in the 2022 midterms, when many candidates he helped elevate lost in key races, contributed to a shrunken footprint for this year’s conference. The event was also beset by scandal, as CPAC chief Matt Schlapp was accused of sexual misconduct, which he has denied. The organization has also been struggling with a staff exodus and a pending discrimination complaint, The Washington Post has found.

The toll on this week’s conference was visible in the sparsely filled ballroom and exhibition hall. The Fox Nation streaming service did not return as a sponsor this year, ceding the media row to scrappier, Trumpier upstarts such as Newsmax and Real America’s Voice. The showroom featured several Trump apparel vendors, a booth for the John Birch Society, and two organizations advocating for defendants in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Among the liveliest exhibition booths belonged to the pro-Trump super PAC called MAGA Inc., which set up a mock Oval Office complete with resolute desk where fans could take their picture in a Trumpian pose, and a studio set to broadcast live podcasts featuring Trump Jr., his fiancee, Kimberly Guilfoyle, and former acting attorney general Matthew G. Whitaker. Trump Jr., in his speech on the main stage, said that hidden under some seats were golden tickets to a special reception with the former president.

Part of the ballroom was partitioned off and parts of the floor were left bare. Even so, only about half the seats were filled when Haley took the stage.

The audience stood for Haley, giving her a polite but tepid reception. The daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley presented her upbringing as “proof that the liberals are wrong about everything they say about America” and “America is not a racist country.” She named former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher as one of her heroes, and called China “the strongest and most disciplined enemy we’ve ever faced.”

Haley got her loudest cheers for calling to end foreign aid to “countries that hate America,” echoing a statement she’s made before that mischaracterizes the process of U.S. foreign aid, which often goes to American companies or never leaves the country.

One of the people who joined the heckling of Haley after she spoke was Kim Shourds, who questioned Haley’s conservative credentials and called her a “RINO.” Shourds, a Virginia resident, planned to vote for Trump in the primary and scoffed at a suggestion that Haley could be a running mate.

A few people shouted back “Haley!” in response to the heckling.

Joseph Stillwell, a college student who plans to vote for Trump, had just received an autograph from Haley on his convention badge when the heckling began. He shouted “shut up!” at women he saw joining the chanting. “You don’t act like that,” he said.

As Haley got into an elevator with her staff, Jay Denney, who identified as a conservative from Canada, shouted at her: “Canada loves you, Nikki.” He said the shouting was “completely unacceptable.”

Another possible 2024 rival, former secretary of state Mike Pompeo, got a warmer initial reception but generated little cheers with a speech focusing on his biography and principles, in contrast to Haley’s red-meat social issues. He avoided directly criticizing Trump, with only one oblique reference to “celebrity leaders” with “tragic egos who refuse to acknowledge reality.”

When it came to the absence of DeSantis, at least one attendee was not eager to weigh in. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez sidestepped questions from a reporter about it and the focus on Trump.

“I don’t have an opinion on that,” he said of DeSantis. “I’m here to talk about Miami.” Asked who he backed in CPAC straw poll, Suarez said himself and laughed."

Development in the Matt Schlapp junk grab case:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... isconduct/

“The man who has accused Matt Schlapp, the influential leader of the Conservative Political Action Conference, of sexual misconduct came forward publicly Wednesday after a judge said he must use his real name to proceed with a lawsuit.

Carlton Huffman, 39, a longtime aide to Republican campaigns who lives in Raleigh, N.C., said he plans to amend the previously anonymous lawsuit, which seeks $9.4 million in damages for alleged sexual battery and defamation.

“I’m not backing away,” Huffman said in an interview with The Washington Post. “I’m not going to drop this. Matt Schlapp did what he did and he needs to be held accountable.”

Schlapp, 55, has denied Huffman’s claims that he groped his crotch and invited him to his hotel room during an October trip to Atlanta to campaign for Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker. Schlapp’s lawyer argued Wednesday that by proceeding anonymously, Huffman was trying to avoid scrutiny of his own record — including expressing extremist views on a white-supremacist blog and radio show more than a decade ago.

“I strongly believe we cannot defend this case — and it’s a multimillion-dollar case — without being able to use his name,” said Benjamin Chew, Schlapp’s lawyer.
Alexandria Circuit Court Chief Judge Lisa Bondareff Kemler described “balancing” the request for anonymity with the public’s interest in knowing the accuser’s identity and the ability of Schlapp and his wife, Mercedes, to defend themselves. Mercedes Schlapp is also accused of defamation in the suit.

Kemler noted an absence of specific threats against Schlapp’s accuser.

“The plaintiff has not established I think the heavy burden of establishing both a concrete need for secrecy and identifying the consequences that would likely befall him if forced to proceed in his own name,” she said. The judge said she would issue an order requiring Huffman to add his name to the suit.

By putting his name on the record, Huffman will test anew Schlapp’s support with the board of CPAC’s parent organization, the American Conservative Union, and with other Republican allies at a time when he faces a wide range of challenges, including heavy staff turnover and reduced turnout at CPAC’s flagship conference in the Washington area last week. The Republican power broker and leading booster of former president Donald Trump has declined to respond to questions from The Post about those issues and Huffman’s allegations.”

Maybe the Tejas legislature can allow polygamy and child marriage as well?

What does "public censure" mean, materially?

Just, Ellis is a lying POS and the Court indicates such 'publicly'?

But can still practice law in Colorado? For other lying POS' ?

Or is there some teeth to this beyond "shame" for someone obviously "shameless"?

Public censure is a published reprimand that declares a lawyer's conduct is grounds for discipline but that does not prohibit the lawyer from practicing law. Conditions may be attached to a public censure. Failure to comply with conditions constitutes grounds for discipline against the lawyer. CO Rule Civil Procedure 240.10(a)(3).

That's all I know. Seems pretty tame given the knowing falsehoods, and the harm she and her co-conspirators in lying imposed on the country.

Not sure about this, but I assume the next level of seriousness is a suspension from the practice of some duration, then a disbarment. She doesn't really practice law; she grifts on "conservative" pocketbooks and has some weird cable or pod-thing going. Only the best people.

Good strategy: Grandpa posts a lot about salacious boy pics, and will continue to do so. But politically, jerks and stuff are bad.

I did not write "jerks" in the sentence above. I wrote a word that begins with Q, ends with s, and has u-e-e-r between them. Not sure why this totally commonplace word is censored here.

I mean, how many times have right wingers condemned illegitimacy among minorities and the poorer classes in the USA? Since they always object in other circumstances, let's see what they have to say here.

Sorry, I put the mundane Fox report first and the sensational one with the proof second to ease people into it. Should have marked it NSFW for non-geriatric politicians who aren't into very young men, that's on me.
