A Texas church canceled Mass services just days after reopening after a priest died and several members of his religious order tested positive for the coronavirus.

Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Houston reopened its doors on May 2, as the Lone Star State began loosening its stay-at-home orders. But on May 14, the parish canceled all services after Father Donnell Kirchner died. Five members of the congregation tested positive for COVID-19, church officials said Monday.

Islamabad (AFP) - Across Asia, home to about half of the world's Muslims, the coming Islamic holy month of Ramadan is on a collision course with the coronavirus pandemic as clerics call on the faithful to cram into mosques.

Authorities have tried to limit the fallout during the sacred period of fasting, which starts Thursday, but in many cases religious leaders have brushed aside concerns about activities that could spread COVID-19.

In Bangladesh, clerics lashed out at attempts to reduce the number of people going to mosques, and demanded the country's secular government allow millions of Muslims to join daily and weekly prayers.

"The quota on the number of worshippers imposed by the government is not acceptable to us. Islam does not support imposition of any quota on worshippers," said Mojibur Rahman Hamidi, a senior member of the hardline Hefazat-e-Islam group.

Islamic leaders in Bangladesh, where tens of thousands of people defied a nationwide lockdown Saturday to attend the funeral of a top preacher, reminded people it is "mandatory" for a healthy Muslim to attend prayers in a mosque.

In Pakistan, devotees said worship is more important than coronavirus concerns.

Authorities have buckled under religious pressure, allowing daily prayers and evening congregations at mosques after clerics promised to instruct religious leaders to clean their facilities regularly.

In the run-up to Ramadan, mosques have been filling up across Pakistan with hundreds attending Friday prayers, sitting shoulder to shoulder and paying little heed to social distancing.

"I will take all the preventive measures, washing my hands and using my mask but it doesn't mean I will stop attending prayers, especially during Ramadan," taxi driver Zubair Khan told AFP in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia – Cleaners scrub and sterilize the floors of Mecca's Grand Mosque after fears of coronavirus led Saudi Arabia to suspend pilgrim visas, but worshippers appear unfazed – confident of God's protection.

Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest sites, on Thursday, February 27, suspended entry by foreigners for the year-round "umrah" pilgrimage, an unprecedented move that has left tens of thousands in limbo.

It has also sparked uncertainty over the annual hajj pilgrimage scheduled for July.

But Nadia Bettam, a 50-year-old Algerian donning a veil to perform umrah for the first time, counted herself fortunate as she arrived in Mecca 5 days before Riyadh's abrupt decision.

"I have no fear. We are in the hands of God," said Bettam, 50, wearing a face mask and accompanied by her sister Fatima.

Aren't you glad we have separation of church and state here unlike there?

Funny how some righties call going back to church is congested congregations "freedom" - a freedom that leads to deaths.

Best to avoid all that by staying home as rational thinking progressive Americans do.

Please don’t make this a church vs science thing.

As a member of a Catholic Church within the Diocese of Raleigh, NC, I can unequivocally say the Bishop of Raleigh is firmly behind following the state rules for re-opening. Catholic Churches were immediately closed, and remain so. Weekly church services in most parishes have been moved on-line. Based on user counts on my church’s Sunday mass feed I’d venture to say half the number of people who normally attend one of three weekend masses now view the one live video feed. Nobody in my parish is screaming for the doors to re-open too soon.

My parish is also unique as it’s close to a NC beach. The parish gives out parking passes so parishioners can use parish parking to avoid having to pay for public parking during the week. As soon as the state issued restrictions on beach use and the town where my church is eliminated public parking to reduce the use of beaches my church closed its parking, too. Parishioners have been steadfast behind the closure. Just smart community citizens.

So please don’t lump us together.

Agreed. RC church where my daughter and fiance will get married in next year up north has been "closed" and doing only online services. And three days ago they announced they were continuing that practice of services on YouTube only.

But most people do not know that while the Roman Catholics are often quite conservative theologically, they have long ago dropped any battle with science (outside of any issues involving ethics and morality). In fact some of the Catholic universities are centers of scientific study.

The Homicidal Consequences of Trump’s Willful & Reckless Neglect

Trump and those who continue to support him are morally culpable of mass negligent homicide. Recent research from Columbia University proves the point.

(CNN)If the United States had started social distancing just a week earlier, it could have prevented the loss of at least 36,000 lives to the coronavirus, according to new research.

As of Thursday, the outbreak's death toll across the country has risen to 93,439. At least 1,551,853 cases of the disease have been recorded, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Researchers at Columbia University built a model that depicts the transmission of the virus throughout the US using epidemiological modeling to gauge transmission rates from March 15 to May 3, lead researcher and epidemiologist Jeffery Shaman told CNN's Don Lemon.

If the country had locked down two weeks earlier than it did, it could have prevented 84% of deaths and 82% of cases, according to the research.

Not long after I started teaching astronomy in the early 1990s, the Church officially apologized over its treatment of Galileo.

The story of his issues with the RC church are quite interesting - because his work challenged prevailing biblical interpretations that assumed the centrality of the Earth to the universe, which is clearly not the case in a Copernican/Keplerian world with the Sun at the center of the solar system (or universe as it was known then). But Galileo had a buddy high up in the Vatican who served to protect him at first.

However, an inquisition happened that swept up his pal, and at that point the knives came out. So Galileo tried to (in the Vatican's eyes at least) pull a fast one and published a book (of which a copy sits in my office) whose English title is Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, published in 1632. In it he has an argument laid out between two people where the official line of the Earth at the center wins, but if you actually read the book, it is clear that the better argument by far is the one that officially loses - namely the Sun is at the center.

Vatican people are not dumb. They (Pope and Galileo's former supporters the Jesuits) felt betrayed, and put him under house arrest.

(Side note - Francis is the first Jesuit pope).

Dude, each State's Governor is responsible for emergency shutdowns. You don't get to put the shutdown on Trump, sorry, but nice try.

And what is it that you think kept individual governors from Shutting down?

You're telling us here that Newsom has blood on his hands in your home State for waiting until March 19th to shut down? Do I have this criticism of yours right?

Governor Newsom wasn’t receiving dozens of warnings from the intelligence community in classified Presidential Daily Briefs in January and February that he either didn’t read or ignored. He downplayed the risk for months while other governments took early, decisive action.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national ... story.html

We don’t have to guess at the counterfactual results (i.e., what would have happened if Trump took early, decisive action?). We can actually see it in nations like South Korea and Taiwan, nations that almost certainly had more, and even earlier, exposure to the coronavirus than the United States, which was primarily exposed indirectly through travelers from Europe. The new study based on modeling only confirms the real world results.

It’s an extremely dangerous lie that Trump couldn’t have done more earlier to mitigate or prevent the devastating mass casualties inflicted by the pandemic on the United States. Earlier action could have avoided many tens of thousands of deaths. By the end of the year, well over a 100,000 people will have died because Trump didn’t act on the early information to which he had relatively unique access.

That doesn’t mean others don’t share the blame. I have previously criticized both Cuomo and Fauci, two individuals who have generally received praise that I think is not merited. They acted too slowly, too. But none of them had access to the kind of intelligence Trump ignored in January and February.

So, Master Brewer, maybe you should stick to things you know about and leave the epidemiology and public health issues to those of us who have actual expertise in the area.
