for me the answers would be ....nope, nope and nope.

Florida 42

You're right: 29. And three of them are goalies. So 26 field players on the roster, eight of whom are freshmen. Huh.

As much as wlax has grown it has not grabbed the attention of the casual fan, I'd bet that the vast majority (with a capital V) are connected to the game by someone in the family who plays/played (and many/most of them have no idea what's going on on the field). Further, once that family member is no longer playing way too many of those fans disappear and no longer have any interest in the game (have experienced this with fathers whose daughters played). The "new game" has a much better chance of grabbing some casual fans but there's still plenty of shivering when women's lacrosse is mentioned in sports discussions. How many football (15 minutes of football in a 60 minute game that takes 3+ hrs to play) fans actually ever played football? You don't get that kind of fan for wlax.
As DMac writes here, there may be another one. It is strange to me that there aren't more fans just from discovering the sport like I did, by flipping around the channels and happening upon a game and getting hooked. Like DMac said, "How many football fans actually ever played football? You don't get that kind of fan for wlax." He's right. But it's still odd to me that an exciting fast moving sport like women's lacrosse doesn't have more fans. Not that I really care how many fans the sport has as long as they keep playing the sport.
As I've said many times, I was absolutely blown away by mlax the first time I saw it. Pretty much instantly addicted and I thought at the time ('62) that this game will become the biggest sport on the planet if they ever put it on TV. While ever gaining in popularity, and in a world where you can see an awful lot of lacrosse on TV, how big is it really and how many fans who never played it, or have kids who played it, watch it?
While wlax is an exciting game to watch today, that hasn't always been the case (no disrespected intended). The pre-rules changes game (which the purists wanted to hold onto forever) was painful and maddening to watch, to say nothing of being impossible for the casual fan to figure out. Stick in the halo, whistle, stop play.....no one knew what had just happened (including half the parents who had kids on the field). The mlax fan couldn't ever figure out why girls weren't shooting when it looked as if they had good shots to take (knew nothing about shooting space/dangerous shot) and the dangerous propel/follow through was a complete mystery. The whole point here is that this is what many, and maybe most, people think when they hear wlax. The game has a reputation (well earned, IMO) of being a stop and go game (with a lot of keep away thrown in) with rules that only aficionados understood. Play on, 6v6 on the draw, and the "new" sticks has done wonders for the game, it has a much better chance, IMO, of attracting fans than it did in the past but there are still many who cringe when they hear wlax. It's taken me a couple/few years for me to get my lax buddy to admit that wlax is now an exciting and gorgeous game to watch, for example. It's going to take some years for people to get over that attitude (should be able to after watching fifteen minutes of a good wlax game), I think.

A quick comparison of last year's and this year's rosters shows the absence of the following from this year's roster (other than those who were seniors last year), with games played in 2021 in parentheses: Riley Hoag (8), Ella Vaughan (1), Jordan Vaught (1). Aislinn McCarthy (8), and Madisen Patrick (1). The key players are still there, so I would not ring any alarm bells, although a roster of 29 is definitely light by ACC standards.

Interesting reading. And yet I got hooked on women’s lacrosse back in 2014. I completely agree that initially I had a hard time with the rules and all the stops and starts. But I still saw plays like this (from 2016 before the rule changes) that knocked my socks off.

I learned a ton from listening to games that Sheehan Stanwick Burch called. I welcomed the rule changes that made the game more fluid.

I more commonly frequent the D2 section, but I have never played, coached or had a child who played lax. But it is prominent at the institution I teach at, so I follow the sport closely.

If you were practicing 3-4 hours per day (often up early morning and playing in the cold) year round at a top program and you had no chance of playing would you consider hanging up your cleats and enjoying more of what college has to offer. I certainly would. I don't think we realize just how much these girls sacrifice to be D1 athletes. BC lost some players over the last 2 years as well and they have one of the best coaching staffs and teams in the country. None of those girls were getting playing time. They are down to a 30 player roster. I'm sure they will bring in 10 plus players next year.

Well said. I imagine it’s easy to hang ‘em up in that circumstance.

That would be a blockbuster story, especially on the eve of the new season.

Don't know this team well enough to see if anyone is missing.
I counted 29. And a quick random survey showed other teams carrying significantly more players:
JHU 41
Carolina 41
Florida 42
You're right: 29. And three of them are goalies. So 26 field players on the roster, eight of whom are freshmen. Huh.
So we’ve got a developing story here...
Yep, looks like something's up in Hooville.
