I know people are always high on Regions C and D, but in all honesty, the 6B Region has some of the best goalies in the DMV area. Champe is a senior and always solid, Freedom has a senior going D1 and is phenomenal, Patriot has a junior going D1 and is one of the most team oriented players I have seen, Battlefield has a sophomore that is, in my opinion, the best in the state, and Colgan has a sophomore that is very strong as well, but she currently has a concussion.

I’m not knocking the other goalies in all of the other regions, but this is one of the strongest groups of goalies that I have seen in the area in a long time and they deserve some recognition.

Last year, the Patriot and Battlefield goalies made the DC National School Girls Tournament together and won their bracket. They were the only two public school goalies to make the DC team (DC chose not to take any girls that were already committed last year).

Most of your top notch goalies get scooped up by the private schools, but with stronger play in the VHSL, they are starting to stay and get some big rewards with playing in the next level
There's a lot of talent in the goalies in 6B and they are probably the deepest goalie region overall. What I hear from coaches and people who watch HS lax in Nova, is the West Springfield's D1 commit goalie is one of the best around public or private. She was an Under Armour All-American and one of the few VHSL goalies (let alone players) to ever be named to the UA AA Senior game watchlist which is usually loaded with private school girls from across the nation.

I agree that the depth and level of play of goalies in the VHSL has grown tremendously over the last decade as many have stayed public and not gone private. The top public group is probably stronger than the top private group in Virginia at this point.

Robo goalie had a great game, and so did Yorktowns keeper.

Yorktown 13 Robinson 6

Coach Tran has a legit squad. Lool out, Langley!
Neither will beat Dominion.
So I made the trek to see for myself what was dubbed in the Lax Community as a potential unofficial State Championship of this early season. I was able to watch the game from my car which was nice considering no snack bar and the weather was really bad (cold, wet and windy).

4A Heavyweight Dominion against 6A Heavyweight Yorktown. These teams may play in different division but they clash all the time in tournaments, share club teams and respect each other. The game was played in rough conditions but the intensity didn't disappoint. It was a fairly even match out of the gate with teams trading goals as the weather worsened. I believe it was 5-4 at half in what was a very physical game. After the break Yorktown went on a mini roll jumping to a 7-4 lead with strong play on the ride and a smothering defense.

Then it was Dominion's turn with a couple of goals from Hickey and company the contest sat at 7-6. Yorktown responded with another goal to take the advantage to 8-6. At this point the weather was really bad and the ball was flying out of sticks. Both defenses had the upper hand for a long stretch of turnovers. With about 7 min's left Dominion scored to make it 8-7. What ensued was a battle of wills with both teams scratching and clawing for possession of the ball. Coach Tran went to a stall with over three min's left and Yorktown tried desperately to move the ball around. With about a min left Dominion got the ball back. Dominion set up the offense to tie the game but like most of the game when Yorktown's Defense was challenged they met the call. Last drive #2 had the ball and the Yorktown defender checked her stick. A scrum for the ball ensued but the game was over when a Yorktown player heaved the ball into the offensive zone. Dominion had not lost since 2019 so my friends seemed a little shocked.

Interesting outcome considering from what a a little bird tells me Yorktown was without one of its starting senior attackers. So next up Langley takes on Dominion that result should tell us something about the big 6A Yorktown vs. Langley clash later in the spring. Dominion with a win over Langley can get some respect back and potentially try to lay claim to being the "Best in the State" but for now it seems 6A reigns supreme.

Tidbits

1. Don't look now but Madison is putting up big numbers. They just routed Robo and could be a major factor. Not sure they have the defense to stand up to Langley and Yorktown but they are well Coached.
2. West Springfield from what I hear from people in the know looked better than Dominion against Yorktown (They say the Goalie for WS is the real deal)
3. Langley is just chugging along with there new Coach having solid wins so far. They have not been tested yet but the Dominion game will tell us something about the team
4. Have not seen Battlefield but hear they have a real team and a good goalie. Please share what you know about Battlefield!

Battlefield isn’t going to wow you a ton of individual play because of their depth. All but two of the starters have played travel somewhere, and many on the bench also play travel. They don’t have any Pride girls, they have four Capital girls, with a bunch of VA Metro, YJ Mid Atlantic, and Cavaliers spread out in there.

I have not heard any juniors making any verbal commitments, but three of their seniors are committed to D2 schools. So their older girls are obviously good to get recruited. And on my opinion, all three could have gone to a lower lever D1 School easily, but chose a different route. However, it is their younger group that is playing at a high level too and fills in some gaps that this large senior group may have. Their starting goalie plays for Capital Blue, she has been on the UA 150 team, American Select, National School Girls (where she beat out the WS goalie), and a few others I believe. One of their middie freshman plays for Capital Blue along with a freshman Attacker who has played in the American Select, made the National Developmental Team, on top of a bunch of other things. A sophomore attacker who is their fifth attacker has made numerous Showcase teams.

So, when I say this team is deep, I mean it. That, in my opinion, is the reason why they can play with every other team out there is the depth of their bench

Minus the Freedom goalie, who in my opinion is the best public school goalie out there right now, Friday literally will feature the next two best goalies out there and it should be a great game to watch

WS goalie is more patient and sits tight in the crease waiting for the shooter before she reacts. She plays need angles great and doesn’t leave a lot of space for the shooter to hit. Her cleats are clean and precise. She knows where to go with the ball quickly in order to meet the ball out of her stick and get it down the field

Bat goalie is the quarterback of the defense and is constantly guiding her defense in order to give her the better opportunity to make the save by directing them. She is more patient in this area and not as quick to get rid of the ball

However, I want to stress this, these two girls have played together on the past, they talk team to each other when their Capital teams scrimmage each other, but when it comes down to it, they are friends and want to push each other to be better. These are two fantastic goalies, but even better female role models. I’m excited to see them after the game so the other one can bow down

Oh, and in case you can’t tell, I am really excited to watch the Battlefield and West Springfield game tomorrow. Both teams are extremely well coached and both coaches have girls on the other team that play travel for them. No matter who wins or what the score is, this odd going to be a great game

Freshman backup goalie for Battlefield plays for Pride. Saw her play in the scrimmage against Riverside, she's pretty impressive in her own right.

As you have said, Battlefield's depth is very impressive.

Though, UNC is a much deeper team than BC, and that didn't stop Charlotte North from putting the team on her back and carrying them to a national championship.

So far, Battlefield has been a lot of fun to watch when I have seen them. The game on Friday will be worth the price of admission.

The Freshman goalie actually switched to YJ MA. I’m not sure what happened there, but she apparently switched over the winter. Yep, like I said, there is depth everywhere

With all the talk about Battlefield vs West Springfield, VAL had to go check the schedule to confirm that there are still some other games tonight and this weekend with the Annandale tournament continuing. There have reportedly been some late tweaks for the weekend with the SATs being rescheduled for Saturday, but still a great slate:

Friday:

Dominion @ Langley
Centreville @ Yorktown
Oakton @ Woodson
Meridian @ Washington & Liberty
Colgan @ Hayfield
Battlefield @ W. Springfield (checked with Spartan ticket office and there are still some standing room and obstructed view seats left for this one)

Saturday:

Madison @ St Anne's Belfield
Robinson vs. Westfield, South Lakes and Marshall at Annandale
Oakton @ Annandale (at Annandale tourney)
West Potomac vs. Justice and Mt. Vernon at Annandale
Woodson vs. South Lakes, Westfield, and Annandale at Annandale
South Lakes vs Mt Vernon at Annandale

I haven't seen a central/main schedule for Annandale, have had to just go through and pull ad hoc from various teams and coaches. They run two fields at a time all day, so it gets a little complex to try to figure it all out schedule-wise. Maybe someone out there has a master document for it?

In my Opinion, the difference maker in this game wasn’t one player, it was the Spartan defense. They did a fantastic job against the Battlefield attack. They knocked so many balls wide that this is what created the gap tonight

Dominion took the winding trip down Georgetown Pike to meet the Saxons for their second 6A matchup of the week. Pleasant surprise that admission was $2 cheaper than out in Loudoun and that the concession stand was open and fully stocked with pizza and Chic Fil A. The tone in the Dominion stands was definite curiosity on “how will this go after the Yorktown loss?”. Well, it appeared that maybe some on field were wondering the same thing. Langley won the opening draw, drew a yellow and scored on the free position just 30 seconds in. That was the first of 5 goals to open up all scoring. Dominion finally got on the board, and some back forth got the score to 7-3. Langley then ran off 3 to go up 10-3, before Dominion got 2 back as the half ended (10-5). Dominion’s halftime adjustments helped with the draw controls and the defense gave the Dominion keeper saveable shots. The spark gave Dominion a quick 2 goals to change the tone and energy on the field and bleachers at 10-7. Langley countered, and then Dominion, during a very entertaining back and forth battle. Dominion kept the pressure on, and Langley continued to turn them away. The Titans were unable to dig out of the early hole and as the clock ran out with Dominion taking the last shot, the final score was 13 - 11. Saxons with a great win.

Takeaways:
- Compared to Langley and Yorktown, the clear difference between 4A and 6A was the overall speed/athleticism of all 12 players on the field at any one time (*including subs). It was undeniable.
- Langley v. Yorktown. It will be a great game. Langley has veteran presence on attack, midfield and defense and it really showed. Yorktown has less, but their talented youth, coached up very very well by Jenny, along with the edge in cage will make for an entertaining match up. Based on what was seen this week, I see Langley the favorite for the moment.
- As mentioned by many on this board, you’ve got to play the best, to be the best. Dominion clearly made the right move by getting these teams on the schedule early in the season as they pursue another 4a title.
- A lot of fun to see the girls (and parents) from both teams be able enjoy the game and catchup on friendships made over years playing in NoVa.

As another poster noted, the Spartan defense was too much for the Bobcats in this one as Battlefield struggled to get clean shots off. While the 'cats got on the board first, the Spartan offense turned it on and opened up a 4-1 lead early. Battlefield could not take advantage of a pair of 1st half YC's on the Spartans, as the West Springfield goalie made some key shorthanded stops to keep the talented Battlefield attack stymied while the Spartan offense made sure to answer any volley as the teams traded goals to a 8-6 Spartan halftime lead. Looking for someone to spark a shut down of the West Springfield attack, the Bobcats traded between their star sophomore and freshman goalies in the 2nd half, but their offense couldn't solve the Spartan keeper for the first 18+ minutes of the 2nd half and the Spartans opened a 11-6 lead and cruised to a 12-8 win with the Bobcats getting one right before the final horn in the 2nd buzzer beater at West Springfield this week for the final margin (but alas, this one didn't impact the outcome).

Great showing by Madison going to Charlottesville. I hear the game was competitive but not as close as the final. 6-2 St. Anne's at the half, quickly became 10-2 in the 2nd half and then 12-5 late, before Madison went on a run including a pair in the last 2 minutes to get the final. Belfield is one of the best privates in the state.

Yorktown 15 - Centreville 11

Looks like Centreville is starting to get healthy as this is what we've been expecting out of them this year. Yorktown probably used a lot of the gas in their tank on Monday and Wednesday. And we know how expensive it is to refuel now. Also, is the "D" in Region D gonna stand for Region of Death this year: Yorktown, Langley, Madison, Oakton, W&L, C'Ville all trying to get out of the same region.

A lot of talk about goalies on here, but the Sparty goalie just held Yorktown and Battlefield to 8 goals each in back to back top 5 showdown games this week, so in my view she is making her case for the top dog on the field. She helps make a talented West Springfield team a real threat.

Langley 13 - Dominion 11

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Langley in the mix for a 3-peat.
