Don't let facts get in the way of a good story:Laxsmitty wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 9:05 am First point and last point answer each other. It’s well known that Petro has a habit of destroying a goalies confidence. Nothing has changed. Also well known, he plays endless head games with the goalies ruining their ability to perform. Petro picks a starter based on a popularity contest rather than what’s best for the success of the team and how well a goalie can run the defense. He should use bench more because no under armor goalie would play for Petro knowing his reputation for being notoriously hard to play for. The problem isn’t selection necessarily, it’s coaching
Since Bassett started for 3 years - I assume you must be referring to the period of 2014-now. During that time period I believe two UA goalies have played or will play for Petro - Will Ryan and now Marcille. Also let's look at those years - one is conspicuous (with extenuating circumstances) - the others are remarkable for outstanding loyalty which should boost a goalie's confidence
2014 - Schneider plays 950 out of the 970 minutes - 54% Save percentage
2015 - Schneider plays 971 out of the 1092 minutes - actually is replaced by Ryan for 2 games as save percentage dips way below 50 - gets his act together and plays well in the end of the season to help out a FF run - pretty good goalie management to me
2016 - Turnbaugh - 896 minutes out of 908 - 47% save
2017 - OK here it is - the goalie dumpster fire and likely some bad management - still some extenuating circumstances - Hopkins was decimated by injuries and the Tinney thing in 2016 and hope was blooming eternal in Homewood - Reed was back for a final year - Supinski was back - Tinney of course - Boy I wish I could call up HA80's and Doc's posts on Laxpower after starting 4-0 especially after the OT win against Loyola and dope slapping UNC in Chapel Hill. Logan had 16 saves and 5 GAs against Carolina. Then the cable was cut on that elevator to the Top and '17 rapidly became a disaster. Whatever the issues - it WAS a logical thought on Petro's part before the season that if he got above 47% in goalie play - he had the looks of a good team. He probably didn't know at the time he had lost Foley, Reed and Supinski would never really play etc. etc. I was at the Towson game freezing my you know what off and truly had the thought that switching goalies at the half was not the answer to the team's issues - it was the offensive half of the field where problems lay - Oh well
2018 - Turnbaugh plays all but 5 of the 1032 minutes - only gets his save percentage barely above 50 - still BIG 10 champs and had Duke at least thinking in the quarters
2019 - Darby plays virtually every minute until the 1st round playoff game where he allows 6 goals on 9 shots in the first 12 minutes to a team that averaged under 10 goals for 60 minutes - not going to proclaim they were all his fault but a switch had to be made
I would love to hear more about the head games and what goalies should have played instead of the ones that did. While I think you could easily make the case that Darby was stuck with for too long - Petro was certainly in a unenviable position with goalie - Giacalone had left the team and I remember posts thinking he was not going to be back. Gainey was a frosh and Darby was the only goalie that had been there in '18. I really have a hard time believing that guy - who hates to lose - would not play someone he thought was better at that position for some unknown reasons.
