Hayden Fry was one of my favorite coaches of all time, in any sport. The West Texan cut quite a figure as a man and coach. He took over the once proud Hawkeyes which hadn’t had a winning season since legendary Forest Evashevski stepped down after the 8-1 season in 1960. Fry took over from former Hawkeye Bob Commings, who was hired from Massillon HS where he won a state title, but never had a winning season in Iowa City.
Fry gave Iowa a new start and new look of a champion with the black & gold similar to the Steelers and the now well known Tigerhawk logo. He had some coaches under that became successful head coaches. Hiring Barry Alvarez out of a high school, Bill Snyder, Bob Stoops, Mike Stoops, Bret Bielema and of course Kirk Ferentz.
