Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
There’s a lot of upperclassmen ahead of him that deserve their shot even if they can’t play and cause unnecessary penalties. Also coaches prefer players who can’t hold onto the ball, can’t dodge, and can’t shoot.HopFan16 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2019 2:55 pm Not really sure why Baskin keeps being left off these midfield lists. Is he an All-American? No. But 17 pts for a second line guy isn't bad, and he's at least proven to be able to beat a short stick when matched up with one. He'll be a factor again in 2020. But the midfield unit lives or dies on the development of Zinn and DeSimone.
I'm hoping they find some PT for Angelus, whether it's at midfield or attack. Kid can play. He scored a gazillion points in a tough league.

Baskin was the clear #2, for Hopkins main players, in shooting percentage and SOG % (shots on goal ). Mr. Smith was #1.Sagittarius A* wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 7:33 amThere’s a lot of upperclassmen ahead of him that deserve their shot even if they can’t play and cause unnecessary penalties. And yet.......he took ZERO shots in SIX games last year. None....as in.......none. Including the last game, that defensive masterpiece against the Irish.
but, let's NOT forget, losing by a handful of goals, (6) Hopkins decides to show the world they can throw the ball around the perimeter ........and teach all the young players that a shot clock violation is offensive masterery too
All the above is coaching.
oligarchy thanks you......same as it evah was

A reminder that most of what you read here is worthless:
Thank you for clearing this stuff up, Ty. Hope Chambers is back soon. You would know better than anyone here, but if I'm the parent of a potential recruit I don't see how Petro's contract isn't at least in the back of my mind, even if it's not brought up in conversations directly. It may not be the first or second or even 10th most important factor, but I think it's something to be aware of. As far as anyone knows, he hasn't been given an extension—which is unusual. Has he ever gone into a season without one?
I believe Mr. Sagittarius was talking about Angelus, not Baskin, and was facetiously suggesting he won't play because there are less talented upperclassmen ahead of him—which, if you've been paying attention, is not true at attack. Not only has Petro been more than willing to play freshmen attackmen, but there aren't even any upperclass attackmen on the roster (besides Williams) other than Shilling who at this point seems pretty set in stone as an EMO guy. If they don't bump Smith back down to attack, then I'd bet a considerable amount of money that the third spot is going to be filled by either Murphy or Angelus or a combination of the two.ABV 8.3% wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 8:25 amBaskin was the clear #2, for Hopkins main players, in shooting percentage and SOG % (shots on goal ). Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
Maybe I'm going out on a limb here but it wouldn't be a tremendous surprise if most parents of potential recruits (and the recruits themselves, of course) were completely unaware of the contract situation, except for maybe a few exceptions of guys closely tied to JHU or lacrosse. Generally speaking, HS kids are constantly reminded that they shouldn't choose a school based on the coaching staff since there's so much assistant/HC turnover. That being said, it's the kind of thing that should really only be evaluated by a program's commits if the coach eventually got fired... a 'cross that bridge when we come to it' type of situation. High schoolers absolutely adore Petro.HopFan16 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 9:25 am Thank you for clearing this stuff up, Ty. Hope Chambers is back soon. Answering two more questions sent via private message:
Based on what you’ve seen so far, do you think Owen Murphy can start for Hopkins next year at either attack or on one of the midfield lines?
I haven’t seen Murphy (or Hopkins) this fall so I can’t really go in-depth based on recent evaluations, but yes, I do think he will play a lot and I’d expect it to be more on attack rather than midfield. But after years of watching him play club and high school ball, I feel like Hopkins fans will love the flashy skill set that Owen brings to the table. Might be some usual freshman mistakes thrown in there, as he plays with a ton of confidence and frequently takes risks, but I definitely see Murphy and Angelus as having serious potential to be JHU's attackman 3rd/4th/5th attackmen and make an impact.
How good do you think the five-star attackmen coming in 2020 can be for the Jays?
Very, very good. While I'd want Brendan Grimes and Casey McDermott on the field as much as possible, I'll say that I was pleasantly surprised at how well both guys took to playing midfield this summer and fall. McDermott had a hell of a June and July, consistently putting up multi-point games while sharing the ball with several Top 100 guys on the Sweetlax offense. As for the local boy, I probably would have laughed at you if you were to tell me in the summer of 2016 that Grimes would play midfield at any point, but he was outstanding when I was out in Columbus for the U19-Culver scrimmage and Team USA's best offensive player all weekend. Don't get it twisted though, I don't see them running middie in their time at Homewood. I'm looking forward to seeing more of them in the coming months during their respective senior years, and I'd hope that some of you get the opportunity to attend a few BL games to see Grimes/Evans/Pietramala twins this spring.

this is great content. A lot of writers wouldn't have the stones to come into the lf muck (espn guys, dixon, stevens) xanders, is gaining a lot of fans. Now explain why your recruiting classes always rate us so high and then the kids turn into busts.Xanders wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 10:30 amMaybe I'm going out on a limb here but it wouldn't be a tremendous surprise if most parents of potential recruits (and the recruits themselves, of course) were completely unaware of the contract situation, except for maybe a few exceptions of guys closely tied to JHU or lacrosse. Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
Denver just extended Tierney through 2024, when he will be, I think, 72. Are any currently DI coaches in their 70s?
Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
Should say “ current.” My guess is that before the NCAA limited the number of coaches, there were a fair number of volunteers with a little age, but I can’t think of too many in my current age group. Was Sid Jamison 70 when he retired at Bucknell?
Why on the Hop thread? First, there is lots of talk about their head coach’s contract. Second, Tierney did coach at JHU for a few years. Third, JHU used to have a veteran corps of volunteer assistants, but I don’t recall any septegenarians.

Man, if that aint the truth!!! DocB, one of the strongest of Hop supporters here, WOMBAT shows less support here for the Hop, and critcizes the program from top to bottom more than a Cuse fan would.DocBarrister wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 1:08 pmNothing like lacking a sense of humor to perpetuate a hatred of just about every godd*mn thing.WOMBAT, Mod Emeritus wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 2:03 am Nothing like arrogance to perpetuate the hatred of Hopkins.

Good call.
Welcome aboard, Ty, seems as if you've got a lot of inside scoop.
Any truth to there being a new hot dog truck on the grounds for half time treats?
Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
In a wonderful move, Coach Birsner brought back Doug Bartlett (HC VMI lax 85-06, VP Keydet club) as asst HC. He is 75 by my calculations and a very positive addition both tactically and strategically from what I hear.

Jays will host Marquette for Jan. 25 scrimmage. Time to be announced.HopFan16 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 4:43 pm Official schedule is out, it's pretty much what 51 said it would be. The exact days of the two away B1G conference games (@ Rutgers and @ Ohio State) are still to be decided. I guess that's a Big Ten Network TV thing?
https://hopkinssports.com/sports/mens-lacrosse/schedule
2/8 vs. Towson
2/15 @ Loyola
2/22 vs. North Carolina
2/29 @ Princeton
3/7 vs. Syracuse
3/10 vs. Mount St. Mary's
3/14 @ Navy
3/17 @ Delaware
3/28 vs. Michigan
4/4-5 @ Rutgers
4/11 vs. Penn State
4/18-19 @ Ohio State
4/25 vs. Maryland (Homecoming)
A few things of note:
- alternates home/away except for the two home and two away in March
- four games in 10 days during that same stretch in March, followed by an 11-day break before conference play begins
- first time playing the Orange at Homewood in three years
- Navy is back, obviously. The Midshipmen have a new coach after going 6-7 last year
- Penn State and Ohio State have switched weekends from last year, no idea the reason for that
- the Jays really SHOULD be 6-2 headed into Big Ten play, will more likely be closer to 4-4

Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
Fred Smith at JHU May have been. Coached the D.
JHU was one of the primary reasons number of coaches was limited. It was felt unfair to have a large number of coaches who were either in the HOF or going to be. Some school complained louder than others but it was a popular view

Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
In basketball they have more coaches than players. Limiting the number of coaches is petty and ridiculous. A school should be able to have all the volunteer coaches they want. In any case, if you are going to limit the number you should at least allow for 5 coaches so that all the positions can be represented plus the head coach and specialists. Is goal a position or a specialist? Either way you need 5 coaches basically. I always thought his was an issue that should be fought vigorously. It’s absurd to have a specialist coach who covers goal and face offs. They are vastly different! Maybe you actually need 6 coaches. I think basketball has like 12 or something. Absurd.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
in any case, would it be beneficial for a head coach to have playing experience as a specialist like Face-off/Goalie? That way with 4 coaches on staff you can have an OC, DC, Face-off specialist and then the HC who has Goalie experience. This would provide that each coach can instruct the areas that they excel at.Sagittarius A* wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 9:19 am In basketball they have more coaches than players. Re: Johns Hopkins 2020
Yes! That’s John Tillman’s situation as he played goal. You basically have to have your HC be a position coach. He almost always has good goal play. But it’s not reasonable to demand your head coach to coach a position. What other sports do that? It’s stupid and petty. I think Tillman enjoys a big advantage because he played goal. He can have an OC and DC and a face off coach.
