@xcoach - Thanks for sharing, Should be a fun day.

The game should be a competitive scrimmage. It will be really interesting to see how Chase Scanlan plays with the rest of the SU players and to see if Tucker Dordevic is healthy enough to play. Some of the top SU players to watch.

# Player GP-GS G A PTS 20 Yr Pos
22 Scanlan, Chase 17-17 43 15 58 SO A
29 Rehfuss, Stephen 14-14 18 21 39 SR A

Anyone know anything about Max Rosa? He's Tom Rosa's son, famed Hobart middie. Also played football ,and was built like a brick house.

Syracuse.com listed it as a tie.

They probably have video clips too.

I made the drive from ADK region on a spectacular autumn day, to C State and their beautiful stadium, to watch Cuse and Denver slug it out... and indeed they did.

I haven't seen a lot of Fall Ball, but in this game I was amazed at the level of lacrosse on display for this time of year. The level of intensity was surprising as well, with aggressive play on both team's parts, punctuated by some big hits/nasty stick checks. GB scrums looked as though lives depended on possession.

Being a fall game there wasn't a program of course, but the only disappointment was there wasn't an announcer. So although I know the SU team pretty well, Denver is a blank. I didn't notice if Ethan Walker (normally #57) played, and I doubt DU wore different numbers...but who knows?

Starters:
Close D... Mellen, Murphy, and Helmer brought over from LSM
Goal... Porter
First middies (WOW)... Dordevic, Trimboli, and Curry
Seconds... Buttermore, Lipka, with Quinn, Magnan and Lawton? mixed in
Attack... Scanlon, Cook, and Rehfuss (Seebold and Nelson played well in relief throughout game)
SSM... Dearth, Small, Oladunmoye, and Dieball
LSM... basically, Kennedy and Fernandez
FOGOs...Phaup, Valero, and Garlow

The first midfield was unstoppable, especially Dordevic, clearly recovered from injury, who seemed to get more PT than any other SU player.

If this game is any indication, SU fans will be very pleased with Cook next year. He was all over the field, aggressively getting GBs and riding too. His third and last BTB goal was just beautiful. He caught the Denver D and goalie completely out of position. I believe Nelson made the perfect assist on that one.

Scanlon looked smooth and confident despite a modest amount of touches due to the offense being midfield-driven.

FOGOs dominated.

Denver of course will be a team to be reckoned with. They are all about speed and ball movement was stellar, especially on extra-man O where I believe they were 4 for 4.

The entire game was very close until the 4th when SU started to control things. I believe it was 15-11 when both teams went to their benches. The SU subs were sloppy and outplayed by DU's subs. With 2 seconds left the score was tied. Coach Tierney was visibly pleased on sideline and rightly so.

A beautiful evening of lax...thank you Cortland State!

Damn, tech, wish I had known you were going, woulda brought an extra fattie and a couple of Stoners for the after game, fall ball grill and chill and hooked up with you.
Game definitely didn't feel like a little fall ball scrimmage, looked and felt a whole lot more like an early season game, was a real treat. Refs let the boys go, can't say I didn't like it, would have been several more flags in a regular season game (and there were some that should have been thrown). First flag is thrown against Denver...dead straight here...Denver fan behind us bitsches about the home cookin' for Cuse in Cortland. Couldn't resist asking him if he realized just how ridiculous that sounded..geezuz h!
Had to walk away from that game liking a whole lot of what you saw from Cuse. As for the no prgam part, throw in forgetting your glasses which makes it very difficult to distinguish 22 from 23, or most other numbers for that matter, and it makes it tough to tell who was doing what. The look of the team and the movemnt of the ball was impressive by Cuse, lot of zip on passes and thrown accurately and to the right person. The O looked really good. Cook looks like a different player, brings a different intensity and confidence to the field than he did last year. He looked timid and intimidated to me...not this year. Had a nice game, hustled and played tough. Buttermore threaded the needle and hit him with a pass right on top of the crease in crowded quarters, really was sweet. D man got to him before he could complete the play and put it in but you gotta love the mentality...execution was there too. Siebold, very good looking player, Scanlan the same. Cuse is a potent team and is playing with a lot of confidence, looks like a real sweet unit around the cage. New OC influence?
FOGOs were great minus a little run Denver went on, gotta like what you see from those boys. They made it look real easy several times and pretty much controlled that part of the game. No two better wingmen than Kennedy and Fernandez. Kennedy has blazing speed, but damn if you can't say the same for Fernandez, that's a mighty tough duo to deal with.
Had this been a regular season game, Cuse wins this one hands down. No way the last part of the game is played the way it was if the game counted (a little honor Tierney week-end ends in a tie and not an L?).
I thought there were stretches in the game when Cuse dominated Denver pretty much all over the field, was pretty impressive fall ball outing the way I saw it.
Meant to mention a couple or heady and hustle plays, gotta love the heart part. Couple of GBs Cuse was able to keep alive and eventually gain possession from. Player couldn't get to the ball but could get a stick on it and redirect it to a trailing player with a horizontal dive and flick of the stick. Cuse made that all out effort kind of play a few times during the game. Heads were in the game, field awareness and getting the ball in the right place was done well more than once by Cuse. Was another play when a Cuse boy was tied up, hand cuffed, and tip toeing the sideline but dumped the ball to a lot of green that a Cuse boy was the only one in. Nothing huge, but the kind of execution by necessity, creativity, to get the ball where it needs to go that makes a difference in a game. I thought Cuse played that part of the game well.

tech37 - Nice write up. The atmosphere was great for a fall scrimmage. Denver wore their jersey #'s. Ethan Walker did not suit up for the game.

Long trip and day for Denver but grateful that Cuse had opportunity to scrimmage a top team to better gauge where they are at. .. Agree with others that the atmosphere and crowd were great. It was a very entertaining watch that felt like a regular season game.

:D Ha, thanks DMac!...Sorry, it was literally a spur-of-moment decision on my part. As for the "fattie," my teenage daughter came with me...need I say more? BTW, she loved the game too as well as observing the colorful performance of the college students sitting in our section. I think they were players on the C State women's lax team...nice/funny group of students.

Couple observations.

Denver in process of reconstituting defense, solid personnel at present but expect them to improve on that end as should Orange.

Denver ride caused some early turnovers, some hesitantcy on our part . Pio offense is quite crisp at this early stage, they move the ball well and have some good size. Likely a top ten team in the hunt again come season end.

Onto Cuse, offense looked potent after some 1q miscues. Ball moved well, difficult for D's to key on any one player especially when first mid line in.

Appears there are at least four good attackman to rotate in at season start.

Scanlan plays within flow and capitalizes on opportunities. Unorthodox style but silky talent.

Soph Cook's full out hustle on ride was impressive and paid off . Him and Seebold were totally different players than last year .Fans took notice of Cook busting his tail off. Same with Kennedy on a long gb battle amongst Denver sticks.. A Slogan is just a slogan but HHH makes difference when seen in action. As DMac mentioned, real effort was shown by many and camaraderie on sidelines appears good at this point.

Dordevic has not lost a step. Curry rips on run were accurate. Trimboli just produces. Lipka and Buttermore somewhat quiet on night but firmly established and Quinn is talent as are others. Numbers here but how many to play? Think it depends on opponent.

All three fogos exited clean on wins and Denver face-off game is good . Varello matched up well the other night . A competent third fogo would allow Phaup and him to stay fresh.

Defense incorporating some new faces .Couple of easy walk in goals for Denver, improvement needed in communication and clears. DePetro play was encouraging . Fernandez pesky and wing specialist but big mids not best matchup in this game. Noted that Helmer not at ssdm but rotating in at lsm and close defense so maybe shifting to either. If so Oladuyne role expands, he got out of position trying to overpower rather than moving feet. Should be easily correctable. Some grooming needed at position as Dearth, Helmer, Small graduate year end.

Porter heads a deep group of good goalies. One of the better stoppers. Early scrimmage but clearing slow, the strength of Bombeery was gathering and moving ball forward with passes. Quick kickouts upfield would get running game going. Certainly have the wheels.

Sorry to hear Walker isn't playing. I would have enjoyed watching him in person...a superb player with one of the smoothest releases I've seen.

Sometimes I don't understand your stuff dmac, but I always get the gist. I did not see the game, but most observers were impressed with Cuse's intensity and overall competence. Been a while since I have felt the enthusiasm from fall ball observers that I sense this year. Got me fired up. Team experience level may have an impact on early performance. I have argued for years that scrimmage performance is diagnostic of the coming season's performance. So far so good.

He sounds like a diva wide receiver in the NFL. He's only 20 years old at this time, so I can cut him some slack. Also, he seemed to be a great teammate.

The 2004 offense was very fun to watch, and there were so many good players on that team and they played such good team offense. Even with a player like Powell they didn't rely on him every possession and he let the game come to him. Their second midfield had a future 2nd team all american (Brett Bucktooth) and 1st team all american (Steven Brooks).
