Think you've got to define scraping by and eeking out. I think the folks in Norway, for example, are living fairly comfortable and happy lives.
I saw a show quite a number of years back about this subject. Can't remember the country but it was a doctor and his wife being interviewed. When it came to money (eek out/scraping by) his response was, look around you at how we live (was a very nice place he/they had). I remember him saying, sure, in the US we might have a bigger house (all about the image, ya know), two Mercedes and a Denali in the drive way rather than just one BMW, but we're pretty happy with what we've got. Paraphrasing there, but that's pretty much what he said.

this is the problem - particularly in the US. The rampant consumerism, that our media and political leaders promote because it is "good for the economy" is a rat wheel we can't get off.

Study after study prove that "happiness" is relative. and that the more that your neighbors have, the more you need to be "happy".

That 5,000 sf house, and the two Mercedes plus a Range Rover in the driveway (for 2) is benefiting the folks selling you stuff, not you.....

Living below the poverty line may be considered eeking out an existence....but I suppose it depends on the person.... My message to my kids growing up? ....... don't be a "consumer".... and the goal in life is not to "have things".... "things can be a byproduct but should not be the goal"..... Hopefully they listened. My kids learned early on that the the goal of TV programming is to hold your attention just long enough to sell you something..... it was so effective, that for years, TV was "free"..... I mentioned that having the opportunity to sell them something is so powerful, that advertisers paid for TV programming.......

Oxford English Dictionary: Socialism: A political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

A Federal park is socialism. Public libraries. So is the University of Virginia. Or our public roads. Or public transportation. Public sidewalks. Have a look at the definition....all of these things are "owned or regulated by the community as a whole". Socialism.

You, laughably, think these things "don't count as socialism".

Your definition of socialism is: "anything the Dems want. Unless, of course I want them, too. Then, it's like totally cool".
