Agreed. Although it stinks for programs like BU to
lose a star player, ultimately it is about the student athlete finding the right opportunity for themselves. You don’t always get it right the first time regardless of whether you are an athlete or not. How many students end up transferring from the schools they originally attended? Lots.
The only thing I’m opposed to is poaching, which I am sure happens all the time.
Pre-2020 summer transfers
Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
Transfer portal heating up with some big moves.
First, Gray from BU to UNC, then Scanlan from Loyola and now Brandau from Georgetown.
Who's next?

Yep, good point. I also missed listing the first high profile player to hit the transfer portal, Burkinshaw.
There was speculation that Burkinshaw was headed to Yale before he decided to go to Penn.
Is early recruiting morphing into early transfers?

Interesting that we have not seen any high level poles or shorties {at least that I'm aware of} enter the portal.
If this is a bit of free agency, with guys looking to upgrade in school, program, or both, I would think that guys in those positions would have some real interest, if they have the right bag of tricks.
Am I missing some players on the waiver wire?

Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
Interesting move.
Obviously I do not know what happened here, but it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that Brandau might think he's proven himself over McElroy, and the coach said 'no, you need to battle it out every week to see who starts'. A lot of these goalies such as Burkinshaw and Brandau are used to being 'the man' on their teams; when they aren't, but especially after they seemingly prove they are, that must be frustrating. And to make matters more difficult, there is no window for several more years as both Rode for UVA and McElroy for G-town are only juniors next year. Not that I am a homer, but if Brandau wants to give Loyola a crack, we have an opening!
Someone asked Ty Xanders on Twitter why there seems to be more movement in the lacrosse transfer scene. I think what you have is exactly what occurred with Burkinshaw, and likely here with Brandau. You have excellent HS players who want more college playing time, or at least an avenue to play more than being a benchwarmer, and they just don't see that at their current school; further, there are more D1 programs opening up the opportunities to play; and finally, strength of college degree is becoming flatter (and less valuable), meaning the right kid can achieve a similar education at SUNY Oswego as at Harvard (it's on the kid).
Coaches now really have to earn their salary; leadership 101 is creating a culture that people want to be around.
Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
I'm pretty sure that Brandau can't join his brother at Yale as Ivy league admissions closed last week, unless they make some sort of exception.
Brandau won't have to look very far for teams that could use a goalie—Maryland, Hopkins, Towson, Loyola all seem like decent options for the Boys Latin product.

I know a very attractive venue that's ideal for the goalie we're discussing, and it goes by the acronym RAC...

Maybe Brandau heads to Fairfield with Baxter. Then he is around the corner from brother and gets to play. Both are Jesuit colleges.HopFan16 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 1:44 pm I'm pretty sure that Brandau can't join his brother at Yale as Ivy league admissions closed last week, unless they make some sort of exception.

Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
It is possible that Brandau submitted his application to Yale prior to entering the transfer portal and prior to the June 15th Ivy transfer application deadline. Communications with a new school's office of admissions is permitted prior to entering the transfer portal. Given his twin is at Yale he obviously knows the school, coaches and program quite well as do his parents.

the ivy of course does things differently than the rest of the free world, of course... but posted transfer deadlines often don't apply to athletes (and 1st chair violinists, maybe) at lesser schools.thetruth wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 2:54 pmIt is possible that Brandau submitted his application to Yale prior to entering the transfer portal and prior to the June 15th Ivy transfer application deadline. Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
That's a major step down in terms of the quality of team and not much of a difference in quality of education. Not really sure I see any reason why he would do that.seriously? wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 2:30 pmMaybe Brandau heads to Fairfield with Baxter. My guess is similar to Burkinshaw he looks for good teams that need a goalie. So the 4 listed by HopFan16 are all fits. Possibly Duke and maybe UNC too. It's starting to look like 5 star goalies aren't waiting to play anymore which could be an interesting problem for the teams that try to suck up all the talent every year.
Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
The June 15th application date is a firm league rule for athletic transfers. No exceptions.wgdsr wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 3:20 pmthe ivy of course does things differently than the rest of the free world, of course... but posted transfer deadlines often don't apply to athletes (and 1st chair violinists, maybe) at lesser schools.thetruth wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 2:54 pmIt is possible that Brandau submitted his application to Yale prior to entering the transfer portal and prior to the June 15th Ivy transfer application deadline. Any updates on Munro? Wonder if Gray was already leaning towards UNC when Munro decided to transfer.

Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
Not sure exactly why Brandau leaving Georgetown but have my thoughts. In terms of Georgetown going forward without him, the Hoyas have two excellent goalies returning and McElroy was starter entire season until 2nd half of Big East semis. He had a very good season as a sophomore starter and Stephenson is very very good as well. Wish Chris the best wherever he decides to continue his athletic and academic future
In terms of Yale, and I have no information on where he is leaning or if he got an application in early there etc. The point I think that is most relevant is that Yale has a rising junior goalie, who has started both years and helped team to a national title and runner up in his two years in the cage. What kind of message would that send to the incumbent and honestly the entire team, if Shay brought him in?

Re: Pre-2020 summer transfers
Agree re: Georgetown goalies. They have recruited that position well, and I don't necessarily endorse the idea that Brandau had proven himself superior to McElroy. Brandau had a slightly superior save percentage in a much smaller sample size, with both being above 50% in front of a relatively porous defense.HGK25 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 8:13 pm Not sure exactly why Brandau leaving Georgetown but have my thoughts. As for Yale. Starr deserves props for showing up in the national title game two years ago, but on the whole he has been one of the weaker goalies in D1 statistically over the course of his career so far. I'd say he can't have any complaints about facing competition from within our outside the program, and given the culture of the program, I'd expect everyone on the team including Starr doesn't shy away from a challenge. The Bulldogs don't strike me as the complacent type: just because the team has been great over the past two years, doesn't mean every starter has earned an unquestioned lock on a starting spot.
