They’ve been relying on the big three offensively for years, the absence of them is hard to replace.

Bingo! I’m also surprised by OSU here?? Very impressive! Also would have assume Michigan would have dominated both teams..

Everyone realizes that fall scores don't mean anything at all right?

Probably only posters with kids playing. Scores means nothing. Fall Ball means a lot for the freshman who play well during it regardless of the score.

100%. Just find it funny people are posting scores for these games. Pretty sure Harvard tying Cuse doesn't shine any light on how things will go come spring. Or that ND losing big to OSU and to Michigan means that something is wrong with ND.

Fall ball results have as much significance as spring training baseball games or NFL preseason games. Zippo. That is, unless someone’s DD has a great game in which case it’s more meaningful than the World Cup.

Two acceptable times when losing is winning as a D1 coach:

1. Fall ball. Play all eligible players as equally as possible throughout the "Play Day".
2. First 10-15 minutes of Senior Day Game IF you start all of your eligible seniors.

You have a point, they lost over 90% of their offense with very few returning contributors. I’m not sure there is another team out there that is in the same situation.

ND and Michigan played close to everyone over the course of play day.

Lots of parents come to fall ball, often more than reg season games. Its important that they see their kid play in the fall, especially if they will never play in the spring.

Is that the logic for alot of coaches? Get everyone some playing time in the fall to keep everyone happy?

The top teams have the talent and leads to mix in more players, but around 19 field players will normally get playing time(sound right?). Rough numbers often are 5-6 defense, 6-7 attack, 6-8 middies and maybe a draw specialist. Teams that run 2 middy lines may have a few specialists that mix in. I see a lot of teams running offensive and defensive middies, I think it gives the other team too much of a chance to catch you shorthanded. I prefer shifts for 2 separate middy lines if you have the talent(BC may be 4 deep for middy lines).

UNC may be 5 deep for middy lines. I don't want to slight that roster.

From what i've seen at a couple different schools, most girls play in every playday, though not necessarily every game. (eg play your starters in your "top" game of the day and then spread it out more for the other games). Playtime isn't even, but coaches like to "see what they have" especially from younger kids.

At home play days, playing time is more well distributed. Remember as part of home play days, most schools have parent's events are are actively fundraising from the parents to support the athletic department. Parents of kids who don't play are less likely to give big.

I go with Fall ball is mostly important for freshman looking to secure playing time in the Spring. It’s the first time the coach has you alone in her /his setting to see what you have and what you’re made of. How your real attitude is and how you handle adversity and success. Remember, recruiting is a crap shoot on those things. You can hide it over the course of an hour but you won’t able to hide it over the course of a season. They really don’t know how the incoming freshman is on a day to day. Playing wise and attitude.

The rest of the team is getting the rust out, working on things old and new and gelling as a team. Wins and loses mean nothing.

Just my opinion.
