What I don't get is teams where there are a high volume of transfers out and there are *known* coaching issues, like ODU and Butler, and the programs/schools are not strong enough to be draws on their own, like a Virginia Tech, but then there are a high volume of transfer in.

The portal is a buyer's market. There are tons of girls who are still struggling to find homes. Plenty of them will take a chance with a problem coach instead of becoming a NARP.

Fr schools that take a lot of transfers, I wonder if there’s any consistent experience of how that impacts the team, future, chemistry etc.? Does fall ball take care of that and by the time spring rolls around, all is good? Does it cause sour grapes from existing players when the coach is bringing in girls to play over the kids the coach recruited? Wonder if there’s any trends with that.

how is VT #9? They took a step backwards with the payers they lost and who they replaced them with. The Stony Brook goalie is no replacement for Torres....not even close.

Jones is the 2nd best goalie they brought in as a transfer. Chu is far better and will start.

I don't understand why Maryland isn't more aggressive in the portal.

Cordingly, Ball, Bosco, Donovan ... pretty big names who all made an impact there. Smith was also a transfer, but I think prior to the days of the portal.

And we will never know who they pursued and did not get.

Is Maryland not aggressive in the portal or are people just not choosing Maryland?

I bet if you did a poll, almost every kid says UNC is in their top-3 dream schools. Not sure if its the colors, the uniforms or what, but the kids just really seem to always want UNC.

Iam not a Carolina grad, but what makes them scary to me is the following"

1. Several of their outstanding players were hurt last year
2. Their coach is awesome -- one of the 3 or 4 bet
3. They have killed recruiting the past several years

I assume Levi will get them coached up == I thought they would be number one over BC and NW -- especially because of the way BC and NW are coached -- but that I mean those two coaches -- coach for Memorial Day and often put their teams in pressure situations so they are not frustrated by them in the playoffs and that will normally lead to one or two early losses. I think UNC has tremendous bench strength as it had to p lay many younger players last year much more than normal because of injuries.

But like someone just said -- you still got to play and win the games.

If their coach is THAT awesome, then why haven't they won more national championships given the number of top-ranked recruiting classes that they've had?

I don't think that is fair. National championships are very difficult to win. Yes, you need to be good -- yes, you have to have great coaching, but you also have to be lucky. NW could have won 3 straight NC and they won one -- BC has been there 7 straight times and won 2. But of all the schools including NW, BC,MD, JH, etc., the one with that most young girls want to attend is UNC. I don't know why -- but many of them wan to go there over the other schools.

As an aside, since we have been discussing the impact of Power football on WLAX recruiting, I just read an article about Apuzzo. She was planning to attend another school. Walker had been recruiting her heavily without success -- remember BC was at best average at that time -- Walker invited Apuzso and her parent to a BC football game with 50 yard-line seats and that impressed the family so much, they decided to sign. So, in her case, that was decisive. I compare it to the clemson coach meeting with Joe'w daughter. It does seem to mean something to some of these girls.

I'm out

Players and parents will always remember how the coach made them feel.

She is an Arts and Science major, so perhaps she plans to go to grad school. She can't play for an Ivy, but the only online discussion i found has been on this site. if she wants a grad degree, I would think many of the powers would be after her. Or, like Belle Smith, she could have a great job lined up. It will probably take an insider who has permission to share her plans with us.

Thank you for such a thoughtful response! It’s funny you bring up Belle! I was thinking BC would be a perfect fit for her! Especially with a few of her old teammates already headed up there.

Linked-in shows she is working at Merrill Lynch in Philadelphia. Her dad has a big team in Pennsylvania but I don't think she is working there now.
