I served in Iraq doesn't imply that you fought, that's a misinterpretation
of what was said, an incorrect assumption on the part of the listener. I'm one
who will ask in what capacity, it's pretty easy (most of the time) to take
it from there and figure how much combat was seen by that person.
Disagree. And he could have clarified that he wasn't in combat...yet he didn't. He let civilians fill in the blanks. No one word about not being in combat.

This is from Vance's page, and is HIS edit.

Don't think there's any question about whether or not I'm a Vance supporter but what he says here about himself is not misleading, which is not to say that I don't think he knows full well the vast majority will interpret that as meaning (my
favorite new one) he ran toward the guns and assume he was in a lot more danger than he actually was. That's on the listener.
What he goes on to say about Walz is just wrong factually and morally. But hey, character is no longer an issue.

You tell the average person you served in Iraq, the average person will assume you saw combat. Some people know that’s what the assumption will be. You tell the average person you spent time at Rikers, the average person will assume you served time. Not everyone, but generally. Nothing is absolute.

Now that you've played the game of "Walz implied he fought in combat"....you're on the hook for this from Vance:

“When the United States Marine Corps, when the United States of America, asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did it,”

Now playing by the same rules, how can you possibly argue that Vance didn't communicate to civilians that the fought in combat zones in Iraq? I immediately looked up Vance's military record when I saw this, as well as his attacks on Walz.

You and Old Salt are welcome to try and tell me "that's different". It won't work.
If won't because you're being dishonest & willfully obtuse.

Vance never used the word combat or war. He truthfully stated where he deployed.

Do you assume that everyone who deployed to Iraq saw combat ?

That's right. And if the game is that political parties get to make stuff up about what someone "implied"....fine by me.

Let's play that stupid petty game: Vance could have clarified that he wasn't in combat when he was bragging about serving in Iraq, and intentionally left that part out, trying to look like a war hero while taking swipes at Walz for being too chicken to go.

This is where we want our conversations to sink to in America? I'm happy to play along. And I'll do this with every politician who was stupid enough to serve their country's military....they all deserve the Walz Treatment. This is the bar THEY want? Fine.

You're right... they're more stupid.

"I served" is a supremely loaded phrase these days. "Thank you for your service" is another one.

Not every person who goes on a combat deployment necessarily sees combat. Simply put, a combat deployment is when someone is sent to a place where troops are engaging in operations. ...Vance deployed to Iraq during the war, so he was on a combat deployment. But he did not see combat while he was there.

In his book, Hillbilly Elegy, Vance is careful to say he did not see combat while in Iraq, saying he was “lucky to escape any real fighting.” And recently in a fundraising email he made sure to distance himself from claims of combat saying, “I deployed to Iraq, did my duty, and I’m proud of my service. But I was lucky. There were some scary moments, but it wasn’t like you’d see in the movies.”

“I served in Al-Asad”
Similarly, Vance recently posted a message to the American troops injured in a suspected rocket attack on al-Asad, a major base in Iraq where U.S. troops are still deployed. Vance said in the message, “I served in Al-Asad.”

It’s true, Vance was at that base for his deployment. And it’s true that the base came under fire just days ago. But such bombardment is unusual and a deployment to Al-Asad, even during the height of the Iraq war, was not known for its danger and was, in fact, seen by many troops as a comfortable and relatively low-risk place to be.

Public Affairs
Vance was a public affairs Marine, someone who photographed and wrote about the military’s deployment in Iraq and whose work was published on military sites under his name at the time, James D. Hamel. Vance has said on multiple occasions that he saw no combat but that he did leave the base as part of his job.

Public affairs troops have a long history of deploying alongside front-line infantrymen, seeing combat and even being wounded or engaging with the enemy. This was not the case for Vance. In his book, Hillbilly Elegy, he wrote that the most memorable thing that happened to him when he was off the base was giving an Iraqi child a pencil eraser.

I saw a tweet from a military journalist who said he shared living quarters with Vance at Al-Asad & that the base came under rocket attack on the day that Vance arrived.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 94155.html

Cullen Tiernan, who served alongside JD Vance in Iraq as a fellow combat correspondent, told The Independent the role was not without danger.
“When we first landed, we got mortar and rockets from Baghdadi, the neighboring town. That was definitely a shock,” he said. “It’s odd to me that people would try to negate or put down what combat correspondents do. When you’re walking in patrol, or when you’re flying in a helicopter that goes into the sandstorm, or when you come upon an IED, and see people who have been blown up, you’re having the same exact experience. You just also have a camera and an obligation to document it.”

Yep. Just as he implied incorrectly.....in short, Vance misled the American people, as suspected.

Don't care what you say.

He absolutely implied that. Don't care what your opinion is, especially where it's your usual game of handing the forum your opinion, and thinking you're handing us a fact.

He implied he was in combat in Iraq. That's it. Nothing to argue about. You set the stupid rules, not us.

You're an ungrateful POS for condemning a vet who deployed with his unit to a war zone, accepted the risk, completed his tour of duty & did not embellish or misrepresent his service.

Agree, and said pretty much the same thing in the post above yours, but because the average person assumes you saw combat (because the average person doesn't know jack schidt about how the military works) doesn't mean the speaker implied such. The listener envisions something that is not, and that's on him/her (born of ignorance...and yes, you can bet Vance knows this). Will say again, Vance has not been misleading about his military service (to the best of my knowledge at this point anyway) but he certainly has been in spades about Walz's.
I've watched this for many, many years with Vietnam Veteran hat wearers. I know that they (most of them) think that most people are going to think that they're real bad aszez who experienced the likes of Hamburger Hill combat and were lucky to survive because of that hat. A lot of them like to play on people's ignorance...they aint gonna bullschidt me though and they know it a couple of minutes into a conversation (and yes, I will engage with damn near every one of them I see). A couple of years back an old timer pulled up to the grocery store with his MARINES bumper sticker on his car. When he got out I said, uh oh, hide the women and children, the Marines are in town! Turns out he was sniper who did two tours in Vietnam and said he loved it. He was unquestionably the real deal, had a real nice chat with the guy. Sometimes you do run into the guys who actually did do what the ignorant assume all do.
