Another factor in Master Sergeant Walz's retirement decision -- I believe he would have incurred an obligation to serve another 3 years if he completed the course work for Sergeant Major & began receiving E-9 pay. That factors into the resentment being directed at him by his fellow soldiers who had to deploy.
