I did not second guess his decision to retire before his unit deployed to Iraq
& I offered what I thought might account for the question of his rank.
I only took exception to his remark that the NG troops were untrained 19 year old cooks.

Master Sergeant is an E-8, Sergeant Major is an E-9. Command Sergeant Major is an E-9 who is the senior enlisted member of the unit.
The CNN article below says he reached the rank of Command Master Sergeant. I don't think that's an official rank.
It may mean that he was a Master Sergeant (E-8) & the senior enlisted member of his unit.
