Chousnake wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 4:56 pm Now it's official. Cornell '24 recruit Michael Melkonian, FO/Midfield from South Side, named Nassau County player of the year by Newsday.

Here is what was written - very impressive

The faceoff X marked the spot where Michael Melkonian dominated, helping the Cyclones win games and helping this specialist win compliments from coaches and teammates along the route to the state Class B championship. "They have a fantastic face off guy," Yorktown coach Tim Schur said after Melkonian went 19-3 in the state semifinal. "Melkonian is definitely a special talent. He's going to do great things in college," Warwick coach Tom Kelly said after the Cornell commit went 19-1 in the the Southeast Regional Final, including one ball he scooped up and took all the way for a goal.

Fellow South Side senior Owen West called hime "the best faceoff kid in the country"

So the Cyclones had the ball a lot.
They went 21-1 after Melkonian went 365-88 onfaceoffs, including 130-20 across their seven postseason games. He also collected 266 ground balls and contributed 12 goals and six assists.
"I just think once I get a little bit of a groove on, I think I din just control the game," Melkonian said when asked about his faceoff prowess, "and I can make sure I get the ball to my teammates or I can push it to myself and just help us get opportunities to score some goals."
The four-year varsity player set program records with this skill. They were for faceoff wins in a career (847), faceoff win percentage in a season (.806 in 2024) and faceoff win percentage in a career (751).

"He's been training and doing this since about third grade." South Side coach Steve DiPietro said. "He goes to all the trainings."He's been training and doing this since about third grade," South Side coach Steve DiPietro said."He learns different techniques. He learns from other guys. . . He's fast enough and athletic enough to run away from guys. He can win it to himself. He can win it forward, backward. So he's got the full complement in his toolbox.

Cornell-related highlights:
  • Salesianum (Del.) rising senior Rowyn Nurry finished a nice inside roll on a take from X that he got inside the teeth of the defense. Playing a lot with Millon, they were the three ’25 attackmen to advance.
  • Cornell rising sophomore AJ Nikolic is on another level athletically. He hammered a righty alley shot on the run that came so easily it gave them impression that he could do it every time but deferred in order to give more flow to the offense. He also let loose a rocket that went high after a nice roll-off.
  • Cornell rising freshman Michael Marshall was the most impactful playmaker. Definitely looks like an LSM to me, super active with his stick and between the lines, and scored a goal in transition. I was impressed by how he navigated screens up top and his communication, through he did get lost in space once during the buildup drills.

Looks like Collison and Firth might be all the way back, their team appealed,

"Without the forfeitures, the (OJLL) standings would see Toronto in first at 15-3 and Orangeville second at 13-4. The Northmen beat the Beaches 14-13 in overtime last Saturday at Toronto's Ted Reeve Arena.
So what happens now?
The language from the appeals committee report, which appears in full below, would appear to suggest that the games that the Beaches forfeited would be reinstated as wins."

Jeff Teat,

a defender, without a stick wasn't even able to tackle Teat

Only thing is, he isn't allowed to play summer box, hopefully they compensate Teat for that.

Jeff Teat just set a PLL record for points in a season after just 6 games. He is the best player in the world and it is just a shame that Covid robbed him and Cornell of his senior season.

The 2020 team was loaded with terrific players. An extremely well balanced team - more so, IMO, than any Cornell team since the '09 Final Four and subsequently.
Off the top of my head - Piatelli, Teat, and Long at attack
1st line middies of Fletcher, Donville (he fit in with the other like a glove), and Telesco --- 3 legit dodgers on the 1st line; Coyle, Licciardi, and Blake on the 2nd
Short sticks - Sam Duggan and Bardwell
Poles - Salvatore, Doria, Bartolotta, Adler
I travelled to Charlotte for the epic win over Penn State. One of the most exciting...and strangest lacrosse games I've ever attended. A tale of two halves. But the good guys won in the end.
Definitely a Final Four caliber team. Perhaps the whole deal. We'll never know.
And the Cornell Hockey team (I believe both men and women) lost out on the season with elite caliber teams as well.

Both ranked #1 when Covid ended the season.

Nikolic is a fireball. If he continues to improve, he'll be a truly significant contribitor to Cornell Lacrosse in the future.

The U-20 tryouts are becoming more and more competitive each cycle. I hope that some Cornell players make the team.

That's some serious Newspeak.

Toronto, Firth and Collison made the playoffs anyway - let them take it out on the rest of the league.

Some 60-70 points for Firth were taken away - Firth was on his way to a record breaking year points wise.

He seems to be following in the footsteps of another Hill School -> Cornell alum, Jeff Teat. Jeff's breaking scoring records mid-season too.

Marshall looks like the best defensive addition to the Big Red since Gavin the Great.
Marshall also changes LSDM to LSM, since he plays both ways.

Nurry is a bit more difficult to assess, since I'm not sure of the caliber of the opposing players in his highlights. Nonetheless, his decision for a pg year may be more about the upperclassmen who would be in front of him at attack than about his readiness to play D-I lacrosse.
