2023 POST SEASON HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENTS

Post by njbill »

I am aware of two post season high school tournaments this year. As was the case last year, one was in Connecticut and the other in Maryland.

New Canaan won the CT event for the second year in a row, this year beating Penn Charter in the finals. The Inter-Ac league had four teams in the tourney, three of which made the playoffs. New Canaan beat all three: Agnes Irwin, Episcopal Academy, then Penn Charter. There were 28 teams in the tournament, split evenly between publics and privates. The teams were predominantly from New England. Some teams brought their recently graduated seniors, some did not. Darien did not participate this year. No need to risk taking any luster off their superlative season, I guess.

Stone Ridge again beat Archbishop Carroll in the finals of the Md. event as they did last year. Looks like there were 11 teams in this tournament with 9 being from MD and 2 from PA. I don't think McDonogh or St. Paul's School for Girls (Maryland) participated.

This year only 15 teams attended the Connecticut postseason high school girls tournament. Episcopal Academy of Pennsylvania’s Inter-Ac League won the title this year, beating Penn Charter from the same league.

The number of teams in the tournament has continued to decrease from year year. Last year 28, now 15.

The organizers say that the tournament will be held in the Philadelphia area next year with hope that they will be able to attract some Maryland teams. The date, however, conflicts with graduation for at least some New Jersey public high schools.

Hopefully the event can continue as it’s fun to see teams from different regions play each other. This year, I saw a team from Mercer Island, Washington. Pretty good squad. Made the playoffs.

I don’t know if the Maryland tournament that has been held the past few years was held this year.
