2022 NYS Public High School State Tournament

Post by Nigel »

Time to get this thread rolling as a few sections (Sect 1/2/3/4) have completed their local playoffs and those winners have moved into the state tourney brackets.

At the moment the early brackets can be seen here
http://www.newyorksportswriters.org/bra ... se-d.shtml

Got a pretty big opening game in two days (5/29, not 6/1 as listed) in Class A - Niskayuna 'hosts' Mamaroneck up in the Albany area.

Good old Nisky! Sitting at 19-0, ranked #2 in the state. Strength of schedule is always the question here so are they a pretender or a contender?
Mamaroneck plays in arguably a more competitive section and they sit at 17-1. Last year these teams met in this game and Nisky won 14-13.

Class B has a rematch as well - John Jay Cross River vs Ballston Spa. Last year JJCR won easily 15-4.

Class C has two out bracket games that probably won't be competitive. Hard to believe Jamesville DeWitt wasn't in this tournament last year but they're back and looking strong. Rye was last in in 2008. LaSalle I believe is a first timer. St Lawrence is back for third year in a row.

Class D also has two out bracket games. Lafayette is back after a long absence and they'll head north to play Salmon River. Briarcliff knocked off defending state champs (D) Pleasantville in Sect 1 and will bus up to Schuylerville, who is 15-1.

The rest of the state brackets will get filled in by mid week as Buffalo and Rochester conclude their sectionals. I believe Long Island Suffolk and Nassau are mid week as well.

There's a few of you out there pulling the weight in the various section threads. Shift gears by the end of the week and let's push this 2019 NYS thread toward Laxpower's historical standards.

Lafayette should be inspired by the success of high school alum (and UVA Nat'l Champion coach) Lars Tiffany (wearing green) in their game tomorrow at Potsdam. That's pretty cool!

Is Oyster Bay really 4-11? “From a town known as Oyster Bay, Long Island, rode a boy with a 6-pack in his hand, and his daring life of crime, made him a legend in his time, east and west of the Rio Grande”.

Yes, that is Oyster Bay's record according to The Suffolk Times. OB had an easy championship game for Nassau County/Sec. 8: they are the only Class D team! :D

In comparison, Section I (NYC 'burbs north) is loaded with Class D schools:
1— Briarcliff, Bronxville, Pleasantville, Putnam Valley, Westlake.
2 — Croton, Haldane, North Salem, Pawling.
3 — Albertus Magnus, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington.
4 — Blind Brook, Keio, Rye Neck, Yonkers

👍 Ballad of Billy the Kid. Now back to thanking you for getting the criminally ignored NYS playoff thread up. Wow with the Nisky result!

That's right, "Ballad" Forgot that part! Love that song. I heard WBAB Long Island in Westchester County bc the signal reached across the LI Sound! They played Billy Joel every other song, and Blue Oyster Cult at least once per hour! LOL

You're welcome. I know Fairfield County well. Played against Wilton and took the Merrit Parkway to Boston many times!
