NBA Finals
Game 1

Mavericks vs Celtics

Deep bench for Celts. Last year they were a great defensive team. This year they combine defense with great outside shooting.

Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe had a nice few lines to begin his piece on the game:

"At this moment, I am contractually obligated to remind everyone that the 1985 defending world champion Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 148-114, at home in Game 1 of the NBA Finals . . . then lost the series in six.

So calm down, everybody.

It’s not over yet.

But it sure felt that way Thursday when Kristaps Porzingis came off the bench..."

Memorial Day Massacre - one for the ages. Both KAJ and Magic had terribly disappointing games. Then they pulled up their socks and came back as the winners they truly were. Boston's biggest mistake was in trading much heralded Gerald Henderson for the #1 draft pick. They made the mistake of drafting Len Bias and we all know what sadly happened after that. Henderson was more in tune with the overall team concept of the Celts and I'm not entirely convinced Bias would have been a good fit into it. But we'll never know. Celts sure could have used either one.

In today's game we don't always have the type of balanced approach they had back then in terms of proper defense leading into offense. Boston does play that type of game. I'm not sure Dallas does. Yes they have really good offense with Kyrie and with Luka. But is their defense up to the same level as the Celtics? I'm not sure that it is. Perhaps Coach Jason Kidd and his brain trust will adjust and create a good defensive scheme to stop Kristaps, the others in the starting lineup, and that solid bench.

Time will tell ~ Stay tuned to Game 2 this Sunday ...

Again, Boston's defense determined the outcome. There may have been a controversial non-call towards the very end on Derrick White (in fact, I saw two fouls on that play). ESPN radio had a prolonged discussion about it but nobody else in the sports media did. As always, Boston always gets the calls whenever they play in any sport.

Let's see whether this is mentioned in tonight's broadcast.

Just a great balance between defense & offense with deep bench led to another victory. And the Celts did it without Porzingis. The walls are caving in on the Mavs. Special kudos to Celts coach Joe Mazzulla for making strategic calls & a timeout to break Mav's scoring streak. For such a young man (age 35) he really knows his basketball.

The problem for the Maverick's is that Luka has proven to be a defensive liability in this series and his histrionics towards the referees played a rather large role in the game last night.

I believe this is the first time I've seen him foul out. He did get 6 RBs from the guard position to go along with his 27P and 6A. Speed isn't his game and it's difficult for him to drop back defensively on quick breaks and outlets. He has shown improvement in his play during his six years in the NBA but not in speed or lateral quickness. Overall, I'd say that it is the excellent work of Boston's Jayson Tatum (31P), Jaylen Brown (30P), and Derrick White (16P) ~ all with excellent defensive work in disrupting the Mav's offensive flow that made the biggest difference.

A word on his histrionics ~ yeah, I gotta agree that flopping and whining just doesn't cut it in the NBA like it does in European soccer. He needs to stop those tactics sooner than later.

Celtics win 18th Championship!

https://sports.yahoo.com/live/boston-ce ... 01884.html

Celtics — led by Jayson Tatum and series MVP Jaylen Brown — dominate Mavericks in Game 5 to secure franchise’s 18th NBA championship

Tatum took the reins Monday night as a scorer and playmaker. He led the game with 31 points and 11 assists alongside eight rebounds and two steals.

They did it on Monday with defense. They did it with 3s.

The Mavs have missed 13 of their last 14 shots. Just absolutely out of gas, out of spark, out of options and, barring something cosmic, in about nine minutes, out of time.

Rob Perez
@WorldWideWob
this entire celtics rotation is under contract for next season btw.

Looks like the rest of the League is going to have to make alterations if they want that title next year.

Precisely what I said earlier. Total balanced team work and, let's not forget -- great coaching.

Great win. Beat my Mavericks. Boston was the better team. We were the 5th seed relying on a guy we got at league minimum. Boston got some breaks on its way to the title but the Jrue Holiday pick up was the difference. I pointed out the lack of a decision maker that can facilitate is what let them down in the past. You don’t want Tatum and Brown facilitating offense for others at crunch time. They are better in attack mode without having to create for others off the dribble.

If the Maverick's are able to find that 3rd scoring option, they could be right back in this spot again next year. Will be interesting to see how they do that because they have cap issues.

As I wrote before, you win Championship with defense.

Sure, another scorer would be a great addition to the Mav. But they need to solidify the D if they want to win that NBA Championship. Both Kyrie and Luka are great at offense and play a decent game of defense. However, they need to be game changers with solid D to win it all.

Yes. Josh Green is an excellent defender and his shooting is coming on. Someone asked me today if I could add any player to this team, who would it be? I would take Mikhal Bridges. Great great defender of multiple positions. Would take a Scotty Barnes or Pascal Siakam also. Guys that can defend one through four.

I was going to suggest Mikal Bridges! But I get the sense he's angling to join his Nova brethren in the Big Apple. More likely that a team like Dallas acquires him though. It might take some creating maneuvering as Dereck Lively is off-limits.

We don’t stand a chance at getting him. Capped out. Actually I would take Ben Simmons on the cheap if we could. He’s still a plus defender. He had a bad back. That has been his problem…. BTW, Bridges is best friends with one if my son’s college teammates. They have nothing but great things to say about him. Have been friends since middle school. He was a late bloomer hoops wise. I love him.

Pascal Siakam is a guy I'd love to have on my team but he's close to signing a five year deal according to CBS sports. The only way to get him would be to give up a couple of draft choices, big loads of cash, and a player or two. I don't expect that to happen.

Mikal Bridges - while he is a team player and good for 20PPG, I see the Mavs as needing more of a power D player. His D rating was 118 while anything over 110 is consider on the weaker side.

Josh Green - still a work-in-progress but he does contribute valuable minutes in every game.

One player who, I understand, is or will be available as unrestricted free agent is defensive specialist and swing man (both as small forward & power forward) Kyle Anderson of the T-Wolves. Humongous wingspan with a defensive rating of 105, he should provide the type of D that should take the Mavs over the top.

Thoughts?

Kyle Anderson does not move the needle. Bridges is a far more versatile defender. I just told a friend this morning that I would take Ben Simmons on the cheap. Can guard 1-4 at a high level and can rebound. It is all about his back though. If available for a bag of balls, I would take him. Tough guy too.

EDIT: Just saw this!! https://www.si.com/nba/nets/news/mikal- ... e%20played.

Kyle Anderson does not move the needle.

Ok, if you say so.

I think it was a DR of 99 in his rookie year and a ten point difference between him and Bridges this year. But at times you have to fill in certain roles depending on player availability as a team mate might be injured and you may to fill in for him -- that may impact on the final stats in a given year. Whatever the case, I'm sure management will make the right move.
