I'm convinced that this season will be far and away the most competitive in recent memory (other than 2019) for at-large bids in to the NCAA tournament. There are definitely multiple "good" teams that are not going to make it. For example, Syracuse who was #4 prior to losing to Cornell will be really close unless they win the brutal ACC. Army, as high as #1 at some point and still relatively highly ranked better win the Patriot or I don't think they make it - they have a very low SOS. After this weekend, Michigan is out. And the Ivies could have as few as two in (the AQ and 1 at-large). My guess is that both Georgetown and Denver both get in.

So what does this mean for Cornell?
-Needless to say, I hope they beat ND this Sunday. But assuming they don't, unless they beat Harvard...OR win the Ivy League Tournament, I think they are out. No way will they get an at-large with 6 losses (3 current losses, ND, an ILT loss + the Harvard game). Harvard is legit this year under Byrne. And they may be a more difficult (personnel) match-up than any of Cornell's previous Ivy opponents. I think it's huge that the Cornell-Harvard game is at Schoellkopf.
-So here is a controversial thought: Anyone attending the Cornell-Brown game could see that by the 4th quarter, Psyllos was really beat up. Limped off the field and Petrakis took the remaining FOs. If he's not a medical scratch and is "all in" about playing vs. Notre Dame, would Coach B consider sitting him on Sunday, to maximize his recovery for the Harvard game? Something to think about.
LGR
I didn't see Psyllos limp off, but I wasn't at the game. I just rewatched the broadcast and Petrakis took all the draws late, but he appeared to injure his leg and hopped off the field on one leg after the last face off of the game with about 4 minutes left. Psyllos was on the sidelines for the entire 4th quarter with his helmet on and appeared to be walking ok when they panned the bench during time outs. It could be that both Phyllis and Petrakis are beat up or maybe neither.

I agree that Cornell likely can't lose to ND and Harvard and make the tourney without winning the ILT. On the other hand, with wins over Harvard and Dartmouth and a 1st round ILT win, they are likely in. That is why the hosing in the Denver game was and is still so maddening to me. A win in that game and Cornell is a top 5 team and would be on the verge of clinching a spot in the tourney soon.

As it stands, I don't see much difference in teams 3 through 13 or so in the rankings. They all have some top 5-20 wins and losses. That means Cornell is likely to get screwed in favor of some ACC or B10 school as in the past based on the ever present biases in favor of those leagues. This is especially true now that we are at the end of the season and most remaining games are in conference. Is Duke's resume really worthy of a 4 ranking now? How is it better than teams 5-12? Cornell has had some bad luck with other games, such as Penn State losing to Maryland and Hopkins. It hurts the RPI. I have a feeling we are going to hear discussions about "good losses" in early May.....again.

I was on campus on Saturday but could not drag my family to the game vs Brown. No matter, I see from the stats that Knust put on a show...we will be in great shape going forward if he can keep this up.

On Sunday night I was in East Syracuse so we could see the eclipse the next day. The bar at the hotel had Ithaca Flower Power IPA, so of course I had to have one in honor of joewillie, Cornell lacrosse's #1 fan. Let's go Red.

Thanks. DJK, That's awesome that the Syracuse bar had Ithacas finest IPA.

I'm hoping we can toast a few after Sundays big game against the #1 team in the country.

Wyatt Knust was named US Lacrosse Magazine's Player of the Week for this week. Quite an honor.

Nice to see Goldstein getting some recognition (and the focus of the article) along with Firth and Gilmartin!

CJ Kirstand Wyatt Knust were both named to the USILA Team of the Week. The list came out late this week. It's unusual to see two team members make the list on the same week. Usually the USILA likes to spread the honors around to different teams.

I might have missed some, but, for the Ivy League, the impact freshmen in the top 40:

- Cornell: 3
- Princeton: 2
- Penn: 1
- Others 0

How’s everyone feeling about the Notre Dame game? In my view, the team has been too inconsistent to be confident. When the team is “on” in all phases, Cornell can play with anyone in the country and have a chance to win. But we usually see a mix of “good Cornell” and “bad Cornell” in each game. Some of that is normal but the huge negative swings may be insurmountable vs. a team as good as Notre Dame. My big fear is a disastrous outing like the Penn State game…

Having said all that, no one thought Cornell had a chance vs. Maryland in the championship game a couple of years ago and the team performed great. This is an entirely different team in a different situation, but the culture is the same and the head coaches are the same. …So hopefully we see a full game of “good Cornell”! :)

I agree with your assessment, but would point out our defense has seen steady improvement.

The PSU game was an anomaly. Their other 2 losses are to 2 top 15 teams, one in OT, and one to a really good Denver team with many late penalties.

They have beaten the then #1Rpi team and then #3/#4 Syracuse. They have been in EVERY game except PSU.

Do I think they will win? NO, but do I think they CAN win? ABSOLUTELY.

As I have said before, that ATTACK, and that offense can score with anyone and will keep them in most games, even the #1 team in the country.

Our coaches always have this team ready to compete. It's a great opportunity and a W makes them a lock for the tournament.

Can't wait til Sunday. Flower Power all around.

If Wyatt Knust puts in another performance like last week, the Big Red can win.

If I get to Lake Placid this summer, I'm going hunting for a cold bottle of that Flower Power. I hear so much about it at Fanlax, there must be something good to this drink. I can't believe I've never had one, but I haven't.

That was a fun clip. Very cool to get an inside glimpse of some of the characters on the team and the practice vibe. Thanks for sharing, @CU88a!

Jeff Teat,

team went from 5 and 13 last year to - it looks to me like they'll most certainly lock up a playoff berth in the NLL this weekend.

And, as mentioned, Teat's team will be moving to Canada from NY to take advantage of that window where Teat is the, or at least one of the top draws in the NLL.

Only mention of Cornell in Notre Dame's preview is that Cornell is 6-1 all-time against Notre Dame.

If it helps, I'm willing to wager than 99% of the entire lacrosse world is supporting Cornell tomorrow.
