Thanks for that recognition. I think they do a great job--well prepared and (mostly) impartial. I get to all of the home games but I enjoy their commentary when I watch the replay.

I am a Terp fan and was there for the UVA game. Schutz is a monster, and is the key to everything when he is aggressive.

What’s going on with UVA’s FOGO situation? Haven’t seen Braun anywhere, and appears as if Ghobriel is now out.
More interesting to me is Tiffany somehow got 3 grad transfer FOGO’s. I mean, it’s been a godsend, but has any team ever recruited so many transfer FOGO’s ever? Was Braun the only undergrad FOGO on the squad? Is there a redshirt somewhere?
so only braun returned from the '23 roster, and he was injured throughout last year and redshirted. they got desouza from a v good bingo career, it probably helped he's a virginia resident and his older brother played at uva. ghobriel was next and a big portal win, not a grad student but a player that played his 2 years at navy and then transferred out before his full usna committment was locked in. probably helped he had a teammate (mencke) his year from highland park, tx, and more pipeline saustad was also from that football powerhouse when ghobriel went there, and each were supposedly great football players. both of those guys did high 50s - 60% at their previous schools.
the surprise was colucci(colgate). he got in to a grad school at uva and informed the coaches he wanted to walk on. again, he did pretty well at his alma mater, made the team and has taken almost 100 faceoffs now and effectively was mvp vs harvard with his late game heroics.
ghobriel was hurt in game 3, came back for 2 games, but hasn't been seen since the towson game. braun has only been able to make it out there for the hopkins game all year. it's been a lot of by committee mixing so far, hopefully ghobriel especially can make it back healthy.
Really appreciate that. Need to keep an eye on this position going forward this season if the injuries keep some guys out. The kid at UNC Wambach seems very capable.

Re: UVA 2024
If there was ever a year to take on 3 new face off guys, this was it, with Braun and Ghobriel out for who knows how long with injury. Virginia has had a couple of very highly regarded face off recruits not pan out. The last one who transferred out is only winning 45% at his new school against a less rigorous schedule so Lars has certainly upgraded the position post Lasalla. If Ghobriel is available for the stretch reasonably healthy, we will be a tough out. If not, it's hard to know our ceiling.wgdsr wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 1:02 pmthe gift of having lasalla for 4 years has outshined the turnover and misses they've had in recruiting. 2 "top" high school fogos have transferred out, one entered the portal mid-2023 season, and they had no "top" '23 recruit likely because that guy came in in 2022.. but the main issue is after lasalla, they haven't recruited one hoo has translated success to college. they also lost duke's naso to a flip (good chance lasalla taking huge reps played a role).Finster wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 7:36 amMolo or any UVA fan,

Lars had better talent at Brown than his overall record would indicate, except he couldn't recruit faceoff men until Will Gural. (Or until he had a coach like Turner to coach them up.). Pre-Gural, a Brown fogo who hit 50% would be considered a real success. And given the oft-repeated LaSalla-as-last-recruit story, maybe fogo identification isn't his strong point. Of course, given the obvious lacrosse recruit attraction of UVa, it should be easier to i.d. prospects: they find you!. But Lars' brain trust still has to make the right choices in the most powerful college league in the sport.

Re: UVA 2024
Well. They picked LaSalla and Naso at Virginia. The latter was flipped to Duke and is an AA so they have had hits and misses. If he stayed, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. It’s a difficult position to predict success and was made more difficult when they outlawed the Moto grip a few years ago. Some formerly successful guys could never make the adjustment without it. If Lars current crop is healthy, they can match up with anyone, but unfortunately the top 2 at season’s beginning have been injured. Still the 3rd and 4th have been effective enough to date, but the competition gets tougher in conference.bearlaxfan wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 7:44 am Lars had better talent at Brown than his overall record would indicate, except he couldn't recruit faceoff men until Will Gural. This is partially correct but not really right about Colucci. Colucci, was not a walk on. He was contacted by the UVA coaching staff before any other FOGO was brought in from the portal. Colucci wanted to get into a specific grad program and therefore they were unsure if he could or would get into the program being it was so late in the process, it took a couple of weeks and He did get into the program and then became part of the team. There was no "walk on" or "making the team". Thank god he did get into the program given what has happened with Braun and Ghobriel. Braun is done for the season but it is possible Ghobriel will be back at some point this season.wgdsr wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 1:02 pmthe gift of having lasalla for 4 years has outshined the turnover and misses they've had in recruiting.

Don't know really, but I do know being close to other Grad transfer situations that College Coaches generally do not have much influence with GRADUATE admission, its not like under graduate where they can help someone get in the school...I doubt they had any ability to help him get in, that is why they brought in other transfers when he said he wanted into a specific graduate program. That is what I heard....wgdsr wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:54 amthanks and question for you if you know... was the coaching staff able to help facilitate his entry/admission into the grad program?cmbtp88 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:39 am This is partially correct but not really right about Colucci. Ghobriel is a junior this year so yes he has another year of eligibility. I know for sure Braun has 1 more year of eligibility, but he may have 2 as he only played in 1 game this year and will not be playing in any more....that is a good question.blue angels wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:45 amGhobriel still has eligibility next season. not sure if Braun is done or not after this season.cmbtp88 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:39 amThis is partially correct but not really right about Colucci. Re: UVA 2024
The one position where UNC has a clear advantage is FOGO. What percentage of face-offs does Wambach have to win to give UNC a legitimate chance of an upset? I doubt he’ll be able to hit 70%, but if he can win 60%, can the Heels pull it off? Harvard almost won until UVA started to win face-offs in the fourth quarter. If UVA starts strong, the game shouldn’t be close, but if UVA struggles at tgd dot and throws in a bad quarter, the Heels could prevail.

Re: UVA 2024
No question UNC could win, they are a good team, but we will see how much of an advantage they have. Very difficult to predict how faceoff match ups are going to go when you have two kids that never have played against each other before go up against each other. Wambach has done a great job this year for sure. I remember going into the Michigan game everyone was saying that Wiedfedlt had a huge advantage at FO over UVA, and looked what happened....very hard to predict. I was at the Harvard UVA game, the reason UVA was losing that game had nothing to do with FO, There was a total of 4 FOs in the 1st qtr. Harvard did a very good job sliding on UVA and almost double sliding...really shut them down...Harvard's offense is very good, one of the most efficient in the country. Byrne is a very very good coach. Of course it helps for you to win FOs if you are down 4 goals in the 4th qtr....but with UVA's defense, losing 60% of the FOs is not a killer for them....we will see, that why they play the games.....molo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 11:36 am The one position where UNC has a clear advantage is FOGO. I saw him in HS. He was very good, but he was not a great decision maker/ball handler. I probably saw the only game he did not win at the X (though he won the majority of claps), since grade school. The opposition came out and threw a bunch of different looks at him. Locked off wings, force him to backward on the faceoff and jump into a 10 man ride, etc. Best way to neutralize a great fogo is to test his ability to be a lacrosse player and not just a fogo. IF he passes that test, start praying.molo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 11:36 am The one position where UNC has a clear advantage is FOGO. Heels fan here and you have confidence in them I do not. Heels have pieces but leaning heavily on underclassmen to carry the water rarely produces Ws. Hoos have been strong for a long time and post C. Gray Heels have been (charitably) a work in progress. Vegas has Hoos -5 but even that might be charitable. I'm just hoping we're not run off the field/staring down the barrel of finishing the season 0-6cmbtp88 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 1:34 pmNo question UNC could win, they are a good team, but we will see how much of an advantage they have. UVa negated FOs as a factor winning 11 of 24, and that's the stat sheet count, not necessarily who ended up with the ball and started their offense.
