Certainly if Loyola can, I don't see why not. Granted they don't have football but still.
Why would they?
What would the upside be?
Years ago, there were some objections to grandfathering the ability of some D-III schools to compete in D-I in lax and ice hockey. Somebody (I think OCanada) wrote on the old LaxPower board, that if the NCAA had forced JHU to choose between all D-I or all D-III, the administration was firmly behind going all D-I to preserve its ability to compete at the highest level in lacrosse.

WNAV am just came on line with their lacrosse broadcast.

Oops, no - they switched back to 1970s Motown again - I'm guessing another 15-20 mins.

Thanks for the tip — I get to avoid that looping ESPN plus promo that plays during delays.

I recall that discussion as well. It would have been Division 1-AA. I wonder if anyone has proactively broached the thought of going D1 ala Vandy or Duke as a private academically oriented institution.

Better school spirit for one and a higher profile sports program. Sure it costs money, but they certainly have the funds.
Do you think that say Middlebury doesn’t have great “school spirit”? Seems very high to me.

Aren’t you really just talking about high profile, big revenue sports at schools with huge student and alumni bodies and that are essentially pro ball entertainment?

Not happening at schools of Hopkins size. Yes, Duke is something of an anomaly but long history.

I could see something like joining the Ivy League, which is D1, but which are predominantly academic focused, but I don’t see Any schools their size in the Big 10, SEC or such and none remotely as committed to the academic emphasis. Lacrosse is an anomaly, but it’s pretty darn clear that a heck of a lot of athletes at Hopkins excel in their arena and are a closer fit to the overall school academic profile than what is expected at major D1.

Pretty sure the majority of Hopkins alums and faculty would not prioritize athletics over academics in order to have a ‘higher profile’ sports program. It’s not as if Hopkins doesn’t attract huge numbers of applicants who are fully qualified and happy to pay full boat…they turn away several times the number they admit, who, on paper, would have been qualified.

I’d also suggest that absent a career path in a sport, the rationale for financially supporting so many sports is not for profile but rather because of a belief that the competitive cauldron of sports is great training ground for life, if one commits to excellence. And Hopkins provides a ton of such opportunities. And that can be at D3 as well as D1…

Not happening at schools of Hopkins size? Are Vandy, Duke, Stanford or even the ivies significantly larger? As for school spirit, go to any of Hopkins' football games and tell me if attendance exceeds 10% of the student population on any given saturday.

Stanford has 8k undergrads, Northwestern has 9k, but most other top private schools are in the 6k category.

Chauvette with two goals off the dodge. I don't think you can cover him with a short stick. No he's not going to blow by you with speed or athleticism, but you've got to get on his hands. It's just too easy for him to get his shot off against a shortie.

Congrats to Degnon on 38 straight.

Right. Stanford is a bit of an anomaly as they have more varsity sports than many schools as well.
