Welp, its been fun tracking Arline’s progression on the football side, he had his moments in a couple games,

and, looks like Arline is unharmed for the upcoming season, so, combine that with two good to very good classes in a row.

A bunch of (Former) Navy Assistants making news:

Mike Phipps to MD
and
Ryan Wellner named D1 Assistant Coach of the Year

Not sure how to process #1 but I think I understand.

Is it a really crappy move by Phipps, something telling about the current staff that makes it an unfavorable place to coach, winning supersedes mentoring young military men, or ???

I’d have to guess salaries are close, working in the state of MD was always the goal, sure recruiting is harder….and maybe that’s what it was in the end. Recruiting to the military is down everywhere….I can only image finding those men and top lacrosse players is even more a challenge. Oh well, the MIDS are phucked over once again.

I’d love to see Pat March, but know that is a loooooong shot as he was just elevated to associate coach.

That job's a stepping stone. There are 4 former Navy OC's who are now D-I HC's.

Interesting choice. I think Cottle lives in the area and is financially secure. If it works out for him, it could be a nice late career gig. If it doesn’t, no harm to him. Wasn’t he involved in recommending Amplo?
To those of us of a certain age, it will look a little funny to see both Cottle and Petro on the sidelines as assistants. They have some mileage on them but are definitely alpha types.

My guess it’s just for the season, and Navy will do a search in the summer

Stop gap in the 11th hour. I suppose we'll be seeing some more Mumbo's.

Nah, you'll get inverting the short-sticks ad nauseum and get used to scoring 5 goals a game like MD did during his tenure

Whatever they were doing coaching at MD, they haven’t had a losing season in 100 years!

Seems to say more about 'who' you can get on campus, no? Much like Alabama Football, who has not had a season with more the 4 losses, ever and only 3 losses in 75 years.

What a complete mess in Annapolis. The truth is, nobody really wants to be associated with him at this point.

Honest question and interested in hearing why this is the case?

Program run by a large donor. Ponies up money for a new building then installs his guy as OC. Gee - Ya think his kid is going to see more playing time?

I won't deny the vibes seem a little off with Navy the last few years and don't think the Amplo era has lived up to expectations so far; or perhaps the significance/size of the hire at the time. But can't recall a program having this much talk/smoke on the boards about discord or internal dysfunction of some kind without any of it seeping out publicly in some way. You could argue it maybe manifested on the field, that 6 game losing streak was striking, but they still finished 8-8 and had a lot of injuries.

Cottle hire is definitely interesting and unexpected, hard to really parse the rationale; though the connection is obvious (Cottle recommended Amplo to Marquette.) Again, vibes are hardly good, but the smoke and what's posted on here would have you think things are about to fall apart any minute. Obviously message boards sensationalize things but it's interesting.

We'll see how it plays out on the field this year
