Johns Hopkins 2024
Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
Maybe the point about not wasting a failing. The team that may have the most talent in the NFL has lost three games that they should have won. Learn from their mistakes and they should be okay.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
IL's incoming freshmen rankings are out. Grain of salt as always but more evidence the Jays have a strong class:
#11 Quintain Kilrain
#22 Hunter Chauvette
#25 Jimmy Ayers
#40 Gabe Sorichetti
#79 Charlie Iler
#92 Luke Martin
#98 Triston Jewell
Kilrain and Ayers are both pretty signifcant risers since the last time IL did this.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
Not that it really matters but is there any insight as to the rise of Kilrain into the 5* level? I'm not complaining and it doesn't mean anything anyway but his Inside Lacrosse analysis from a year or two ago - while giving him 4 stars - was not exactly a full bouquet of roses with adjectives like "vanilla" and even labeling him as "a half step slow". Now he's the #11 recruit in the entire class? His senior year must have been something.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
He had a dominant senior year and got better in basically every phase of the game. Good in transition too as we saw in the fall. About as complete and college ready a pole as you’ll find. Brooks English made a similar jump. Keep that Lawrenceville train comin. Posner’s got an unbelievable thing going in central Jersey51percentcorn wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 10:11 am Not that it really matters but is there any insight as to the rise of Kilrain into the 5* level? Football team won its first round playoff game 62-20 over West. Conn. St. at Homewood. 11-0 and 14 straight wins. Good weather but only 620 at the game. Next: Union.

Since it could be confusing this is not the juggernaut Mt. Union - it's Union College. Never say never but the Jays might be favored. The women's X country juggernaut comes to an end but volleyball is off to the Elite 8.

The Jays are definitely favored, Union was a at large pool C who got a solid first round in a declining Delaware Valley. Like 60-40, 65-35 hop favored and Union could win they have a big veteran OL but they also lost a key offensive player late in the game yesterday and their QB is mediocre, was better last year.
Union is in “bucolic” Schenectady, old stomping grounds of Kurt Vonnegut and lots of General Electric dumping of filth and pollution in the water for five decades. Going from downtowns crack lair to the campus is hilarious and something out of a Magritte painting. Great liberal arts college who most Hobart football alums hate dearly (this one included).

Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
Given the veterans on the roster I don't know how much actual field these kids will see next spring but their behind the scenes development will be critical for 2025 and beyond. Similar in some ways to the Rabil group in 04/05 among others.HopFan16 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2023 1:19 pm IL's incoming freshmen rankings are out. Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
A followup for other Hopkins sports teams--Hopkins' women's field hockey team lost to Middlebury 2-0 in the D3 NCAA finals today.
This is the third year in a row Hopkins has lost to Middlebury in the finals.
Post-game interview is on the Hopkins Athletics website.
This is the first time I have ever posted here,
hope this didn't get goofed up. Best regards.

Middlebury is 65-1 over the last 3 years. In 2023 they beat Babson 2-1 and Bates 2-0 very early in the season. Otherwise all other 19 opponents were conquered by scores well past 2-0. Middlebury surrendered 10 goals all season - I might hazard a guess several of those were late after the issue was long decided. Congrats to the Lady Jays for making it this far and making the game very competitive.

What is your PREDICTION?

So, we all know there will be a lot of talent on the Blue Jays’ 2024 roster.
The question is, is there enough talent to:
(1) “compete” for a national championship (a phrase which I despise … is your goal to “compete” for a national title or to actually win one? ); or
(2) “win” a national championship.
I’m asking for predictions here, not any whimpering about the first game being months away.
My take … I am confident they can “compete” for a national championship (e.g., another quarterfinal run).
Having said that, I am not certain they have the talent to actually win another title, which requires a whole ’nother level of talent and execution. I think multiple players would need to make a jump from, say, an HM-AA quality player to something more like a second- or third-team caliber AA. Blue Jays also seemingly lack a Tewaaraton-level player who can take over games in the playoffs.
So, I predict (1), but I am hoping this team will exceed the paper roster and bring home the big trophy next May.
Go Blue Jays!

Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
Well the definition of compete is the following:
"strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others who are trying to do the same.
So if you want to compete for a national championship - that's the same as saying you want to win it - neither one is a guarantee
In additon given Hopkins record for 7 and almost .5 seasons since 2015 is 4 games over .500 - I'll be happy with competing for one.
Given that they made the quarterfinals and very arguably lost the least amount of talent from last year's team - particularly on the offensive end - of course they have the talent - predictions are worthless - so many factors
- Schedule
- Injuries - both yours and opponents
- Intangibles
- Even the committee's decisions - Hopkins COULD have - not saying should - received Penn State's draw for example and therefore COULD have - not saying would - had an easier path to the semis rather than playing Notre Dame.
Look - assuming a lucky year with injuries - you're starting 2 grad students and technically a senior at attack (though Melendez has another year)
a grad student at goalie, at least 1 senior and grad student on close (though you hope Smith can return) with a grad transfer as depth, a senior and junior at LSM, 2 seniors on your first SSDM rotation and a grad student transfer there as well - not to mention 4 or 5 seniors likely to get significant playing time at midfield - If not now when?
18 of the 22 Tewaaraton winners have been attackmen so with a returning winner and Shellenberger and the Kavanaughs running around - no Tewie in Baltimore this year. Hopkins does have high AA talent - namely Collison and Smith and the Hopkins attack is returning 160 points - that's 53 a guy so not chopped liver

Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
Happy Thanksgiving to all the Jays fans. I am thankful that the Bluejays seem to be on the rise. Hopefully next season will have them playing on the final weekend.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2024
Jays always have plenty of talent! Some positions have more than others like many top programs. There will be no Natty in Baltimore this year.

Football team waxed Union 39-17. Have Randolph Macon in the quarters. Good matchup.

Well shockingly of the 6 teams ranked ahead of Hopkins in football - 2 lost last week-end and one of them was Mt. Union - upset by Alma. Hard to tell if competition is an issue but Randolph Macon has been laying some small school A$$ whoopings on some folks. If the Jays can take down the Yellow Jackets - a match up with the winner of Alma and Cortland would await - both ranked behind Hopkins for whatever that's worth.

It was as shocker. But the N Central and U W Whitewater winner likely prevails but we will see a new face in finals from the one the bracket. N Central beat at top ten Texas school by 50pts…51percentcorn wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2023 7:44 am Well shockingly of the 6 teams ranked ahead of Hopkins in football - 2 lost last week-end and one of them was Mt. Saw this on another forum, where Cooter — the deranged Maryland rube who used to post here before he was driven out for being a racist — posts frequently about me in a truly bizarre manner, but anyway:
https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/ ... 0-41/62284
IL has put four Jays in its top 50 players in the country so far — Collison (46), Martin (44), Ierlan (42), Melendez (41). Glass half full reading of that is that the Jays have a lot of very good players. Glass half empty version is that none of them are truly *great* top 10 type players. Scott Smith will probably be somewhere in the top 40 and since IL along with the AA voters continues to forget that Angelus exists, that'll probably be it for our guys after Smith makes an appearance.
I am not going to weigh in on the rather pointless debate of what "competing" for titles means but what I will say is, in addition to the roster just being flat out better and deeper at every position than it was a few years ago, 2024 will be the first season in a long time with real coaching continuity and a firm culture in place. This is the season that all the struggles and growing pains have been building towards. We'll see what happens.
