Nope. Not Penn.

The committee claims to use certain formula but tell that to the Cadets on Army”s 2017 team that beat Syracuse and Notre Dame but didn’t get selected along with Rutgers who beat Johns Hopkins 2x yet didn’t get selected ! I think the eye test has to count for something! It’s ridiculous to have a quarterfinal match up of Yale and UPenn The committee obviously has a hard job but there’s definitely room for improvement. I was on a team that got left out one year and that sting lasts a lifetime

really? we're doing rutgers, again!?!?
shouldn't we get a break this year?

Hopkins did get a break this year. Again. That's the whole point.

Heh heh. Boards are getting slow. Just tryin to keep it lively...

Worst part is, I watched the game in question from start to finish.....
Re: D1 Men NCAA Tournament
The system sucks but, it is what it is. Should Cornell be in? Who the hell knows. If the Jays were out, I would be disappointed but, not bitter.

We are! Should be a great tournament. Best of luck to your Jays!

Re: D1 Men NCAA Tournament
Anyone have the Final NCAA RPI? They haven't updated the ncaa.org site.
I thought Rutgers had a #22 RPI. They clearly moved up over the weekend.

All “eye tests” do is reenforce existing biases much like gets demonstrating here. At one point in time the complaint was bias, backroom deals, conspiracies. More objective criteria needed so there is less room for it,
More objective criteria are adopted and conspiracies, deals, biases. The Committee abides by the criteria they have pretty well
The notion they are conspiring in some fashion to hose a particular team or favor another is pretty absurd. Especially when teams failed to take care of their own business on the field. The circular rationale used is often entertaining though

Re: NCAA Tournament
You are also forgetting that when you refer to teams as "top", you are referring to the very horrible system that is the RPI. (and it's clear that it's NOT clear if the joke n$aa used the simple RPI lacrosse formula, which is a joke anyway, and included Hampton so the entire Sunshine Con gets bathed in the bad stats, not just the teams that actually played Hampton. )a fan wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 4:20 pm
My issue is: it's clear to me that posters and lax fans---and D1 coaches, for that matter----don't understand that that is precisely what SOS does. If you like giving credit for tough losses, as DocB is, I'm cool with that.
I think it's a stupid way of handing out bids. Cornell beat more top 20 teams than Hopkins did. But Hopkins got in because they have a litany of losses to good teams, and that's why they got a bid. If you're ok with that, and that's how you think bids should be handed out, I'm fine with your view. Everyone has an opinion.
My point is: lax fans simply don't understand that the current system is handing out bids for losing to top teams.
Ask every year, the tourney would be just swell if they used the 15%**, or more, auto invite to teams with better winning percentage. (at large only, obviously ) HIGH point is ranked second in all of the n$aa in winning percentage. Beat the team they are tied with (UVA) and Duke. It's lame. Like saying I am a good golfer because I LOSE....badly.....to really, really good people. THink about it.
** You wanna invite Hopkins, whose .533 winning percentage puts them squarely in cozy confines with Detroit Mercy and Cleveland St and ranked in the 30's.........you gotta invite Hobart and High Point too, as they are the only teams that are NOT tourney bound with 15%, or higher, winners.

4 ACC teams invited(again) is a joke. Maybe more than one ACC team can win a first round game this yearHooDat wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 3:22 pmthe solution (outside the ACC) is simple - win your conferenceMatnum PI wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2019 11:02 pm12-0 and 0-12 are meaningless. But, together, it is meaningful. especially if you breakdown the Ws and Ls and the individual opponents by how they contributed to the SOS.a fan wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2019 10:57 pmSOS is the dumbest metric ever. The ENTIRE point to it is to give teams credit for losing. What genius thought that SOS tells you anything? You can go 0-12 or 12-0, and have the exact same SOS. With that in mind, what value does it have? Zero. Been pointing this out for 20 years.
It's really just a collection of lacrosse independents that happen to have basketball teams that play in the same conference.
One announcer said "Notre Dame could win a championship.....or lose a first round game " No shirt sherlock. Something about 80% of life is just showing up A lot of factors go into winning it all, but it's always been about the invitation.
I can prove it, with math......that the system is rigged for the laxmafia. (ACC) I just have to find the write math person to pay first.

I will give you the families New Shoreham house if you can find a college hockey team, or hoops, or boreball, or soccer, or beach pornvolley, or.....that BEAT two top 5 teams, had the second best winning percentage in the sport......and did NOT get a chance to play for a championship. Good luck. It's a nice house.
All these stats are just lame excuse to get the rich richer, as Quint said. Is this how the Brits are picking the Premier league playoff field, with SOS, RPI, QW, etc.

Good point. You meant Yale, not Penn, right? But Duke and Yale ran hot enough when they ran hot so that they're in my list of a half dozen potential contenders.a fan wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 10:09 pmSo did Hopkins, Syracuse, Duke, Penn, and Maryland.3rdPersonPlural wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 9:53 pm They have run hot and cold all year, and they ended with a loss....
I guess that Hopkins, 'cuse, ND, Loyola and the Terps (who all lost some games and closed on a loss) had a little something that Cornell didn't in the eyes of the committee. Based on my eye test - a test upon which many folks here heap scorn - I'd say that a hot Cornell would outperform a hot Notre Dame, but, like Hopkins, 'cuse, Loyola and the Terps, their collective role in the tourny is as a spoiler.
Re: NCAA Tournament
Probably true, although a "spoiler", North Carolina, did win the title just 3 years ago.3rdPersonPlural wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2019 10:29 am I'd say that a hot Cornell would outperform a hot Notre Dame, but, like Hopkins, 'cuse, Loyola and the Terps, their collective role in the tourny is as a spoiler.
More to the point, outside of PSU, none of the other top seeds seem particularly dominating. Duke has 4 losses, while UVa, Penn, and Yale all have 3. So some "spoiler" getting hot and winning seems a possibility.

Re: D1 Men NCAA Tournament
That's what I saw. But they had to move into the top 20, otherwise, who is the third top 20 win for Hopkins?
From the chairman of the selection committee:
“Cornell had the least amount of top-20 wins [in that group], and they had two,” Hayes said. “Maryland had five, Hopkins had three and had the No. 1 strength of schedule. Syracuse had four and had a head-to-head win over Cornell.
Maryland twice....who is the third top 20 win? Has to be Rutgers. Rutgers moved up at least two spaces after this weekend's games, and saved Hopkins' season. Oh, the irony.
Notice his mention of the #1 SOS. Those "good" losses counted. It's a shame, but it is what it is until it gets fixed.
