Florida State
Re: Florida State
I agree. FSU will have similar to success to Clemson in their first few seasons. Florida will lose some commits to FSU, and USF & Clemson for that matter. However, in 10 years when the dust settles I think Florida will be just fine. The top girls right now will want to go somewhere new, but after the programs are established, Florida will get some commits back. Florida still has a lot to be desired. USF will come out the worst of the 4.
Re: Florida State
Yeah. I think this hurts USF the most. Florida and FSU will be the big dogs until Miami jumps in which should be soon.user1020 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:58 pm I agree. Not likely to have as much of an impact on USF as this will on other northern programs. Players are looking South to play lacrosse. They just have another reason to come down now.Relax77 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:51 pmNot gonna be about academics. FSU is gonna blow up right outta the gate like Clemson. Agree, many will continue to want to play at USF. It’s hard for USF to compete with those who want to play in the ACC, but who knows what the future holds for that conference.Relax77 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 8:49 pmI think kids will still want to go to USF. When the new on-campus stadium, which will only house football and wlax, is complete in 2026 this will be a big draw for players. Add to this the new indoor practice facility and USF is heavily committed to athletics. They missed the boat to invest in athletics in the early 2000s when their football team was Top 10, sounds like they will not make this mistake again.
And being close to the beaches, downtown Tampa, Hyde Park, etc will be appealing to many.
Re: Florida State
Lacrosse is still a prestige driven sport. USF is not prestigious. Having other options in Florida will not help them despite whatever money they put in their facilities. I wonder if they won’t be more like a Jacksonville.VAMomGlax2019 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 9:11 pmAgree, many will continue to want to play at USF. I think they will be a big step up from Jacksonville. And a big step down from Florida and FSU. Did I read correctly that the stadium is going to seat 35k? Not sure how that can be considered to be built for wlax. Sounds like it’s a football stadium that the wlax team will happen to play in. Having 300 people in a 35k seat stadium will not be a great atmosphereVAMomGlax2019 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 9:11 pmAgree, many will continue to want to play at USF. I wonder when they realize that some of the schools they are targeting are more like suitcase schools in the Northeast they are content with their decisions.

The comment about USFs new on-campus stadium was simply made to point out this will make a difference to student-athletes who will want to attend football games on campus. As it relates to wlax, those two sports will share the stadium and both teams have been asked to provide input as to what they want included in the stadium design. With Florida, FSU, Jacksonville, and potentially Miami adding lacrosse the USF stadium will be an ideal stadium and location to host the NCAA finals at some future date.hmmm wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:19 pmDid I read correctly that the stadium is going to seat 35k? I’m not sure how the one poster defines a prestigious school. USF was just accepted into the AAU which only 71 schools are members, including schools like Northwestern, UVA, Stanford, Princeton, Penn, etc. Not bad company. And the school is ranked in the top 100 national universities. If prestigious is being an Ivy then no, USF does not fit this bill. But it is a school that offers top lacrosse players a solid combination of academics and lacrosse.

It could go either way for Florida and FSU Florida is a better school an academically , with a history of national relevance in lacrosse. Their football team also seems to be on the rise again and sec is the premier football conference historically.Relax77 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:51 pmNot gonna be about academics. Tallahassee vs Gainesville is a tossup for me.
Florida state has a currently better football program but their biggest advantage (which they share with Clemson) is that they will be playing in the ACC, which—assuming the ACC stays relatively intact—is by far the most glamorous lacrosse conference for women’s lax. The AAC isn’t close and playing in the ACC is a huge draw for recruits.
And if Clemson football team continues on its current path, Clemson will lose some luster as well.
I agree that USF is the likely loser in the Florida lacrosse derby—they have neither the academics of Florida nor the ACC allure of FSU.
I would predict that if we look back in 15 years, Florida will still be a top 20 team, and it’s a tossup for me if either Clemson or FSU will be top 25. I’d bet a dollar USF won’t be!

I sure hope not. The oppressive heat and humidity in Florida in late May would make playing games there insufferable for the players, not to mention the fans traveling down from the Northeast.VAMomGlax2019 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 11:25 pm the USF stadium will be an ideal stadium and location to host the NCAA finals at some future date.

Most interesting part of the announcement for me is timing, which is on a much shorter timeline than other new D1 programs.
In one of the articles they mentioned they hope to have a coach in place by the end of November.
Could you imagine the outrage of a current D1 head coach leaving her team in mid to late November?

Is it really the case NE that players want to go play in Florida? I mean North Carolina sure but Florida? Most of the college kids I've known seem to want to go about a state away from home, far enough to be left alone by parents but close enough when they need somethingRollTheCrease wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 8:20 pmNot likely to have as much of an impact on USF as this will on other northern programs. Lol
I am sure I will be criticized for being overly-pragmatic here.
But…. If it was in the best interest of a University to fire a coach in mid to late November, would you expect them to do it? Of course. They are fiduciaries for their faculty, staff, and students. So, then, if it is in the best interest of a coach and their family to leave a university in mid to late November, would you expect them to do it? Of course. They are fiduciaries for their family and careers. Why would there be outrage? Should we honestly expect coaches to show loyalty to their universities when we know full well the university isn’t loyal to them. Bottom line: these are employers and employees.
Also worth mentioning the vast majority of college coaches are not making six figures. Many are WELL below that. In this inflated economy, an ACC salary would be a significant upgrade so a huge number of coaches.

Maybe that perspective of employers and employees makes sense for those working in the private sector or more of a corporate environment. However, for people working at educational institutions, the loyalty people feel and expect isn't necessarily towards the institution/administration but to the students. If you talk to people who work with students and who leave or consider leaving, they don't feel bad about leaving the institution. They feel bad about leaving the students. That's where the outrage would come into play.LaxPundit07 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 1:23 pm Should we honestly expect coaches to show loyalty to their universities when we know full well the university isn’t loyal to them. Re: Florida State
Where is the loyalty to the students when Stanford joins the ACC? Making the kids fly all over the country for games in the middle of the week regularly. Where is the loyalty to the students when administrations put students at risk by assigning few or no athletic trainers for conditioning and strength sessions for non revenue sports, jeopardizing the safety of those students? Where is the loyalty when kids are arriving home on busses at 3:30 am instead of staying the extra night and respecting their mental and physical health? I am sure you see the point I am making. Universities show loyalty to their students and staff when it makes sense financially. And they should expect that in return until or unless that changes. Do the students often get caught in the middle? Absolutely. But a coach leaving in November is at least number 73,619 on the list of things folks should be outraged about in the world of college athletics.ultravisitor wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 2:16 pmMaybe that perspective of employers and employees makes sense for those working in the private sector or more of a corporate environment. Re: Florida State
Will be interesting to see how big a name FSU goes for in its coaching search?
Obviously, the big name out there would be Joe Spallina. No idea if he would ever leave the island, but this could be an opportunity to play an ACC schedule at a well resourced school.
Another name to look at that won't break the break would be Emilia Ward. Even though she arrived at CMU after Alfred left, I'm sure there is still a connection there.
I'm sure Tumolo will get some consideration as well as some of the usually candidates.
I doubt this would be the right opp for a top assistant since my guess is they want someone experienced. My sleeper candidates would be O'Leary and Halfpenny. Both have had success in the past, can recruit but probably need a fresh start. Can see this working for a variety of reasons.
