Couple of minor corrections on the Cornell comparison: Cornell's coach resigned for personal reasons (at least, that's what it says in the press releases). Then, the interim coach was given the full year up front, with the search for a permanent coach not to begin until after that year (something which is so unusual that I know of no other example in any sport at any school).

Was the addition of "Associate Head Coach" to Wellner's job title a few seasons ago a specific quid pro quo from the AD ?

Had Wellner received other HC overtures & was it a signal (stated or implied) ?

Worth noting -- Richie Meade first came to Navy as an assistant. ...so did Paul Johnson & Ken Niumatalolo.

Thanks for the corrections. Don't want to stir up any "Hornet's Nests". As I recall, there were calls for his head building in 2017 since Cornell's record was 6-7 in 2016, including some lopsided losses to Brown and other Ivies. The 2017 season was also a very dismal one at 5-8, but Coach Kerwick did resign for personal reasons as you noted. Important ones to note since the Navy Lacrosse search seems very close to officially starting, if it hasn't already.

Maybe Holy Cross is a recent example? Less prominent program but Coach Burke served as interim and hired assistants, including Coach Lynch from NAPS.

I do hope (there's that word again  ) that the interview process is elongated. A longer process through the 2020 season would give the AD a free "call or option" and help stabilize the program, including the relatively important 2020 recruiting class. The interim record would speak for itself and it might even unify many of the different constituents.

I didn't graduate from the Naval Academy in the 1960s, am not rich, and don't donate to NAAA  so I'll have to find other ways to support Coach Wellner.

In my heart of hearts I believe RS waited about 3-4 years too long to change/adapt to what was going on right in front of him. Someone mentioned what he did at Dartmouth...and what happened after he left....well let's take a lookhe did not do much better than he did here, with only one winning season. And the coach that followed him...about the same type of W/L's. The telling stats at Dartmouth...while you are looking at that page, pay attention to the Goals Scored and Goals Against in his era..then before and after his era. Maybe he tries to control lacrosse players just a bit too much???!

His "my guys are not here yet" comment has come and past and he barely got us above 10.5 g/gm average....that just will not work in this lacrosse era. His offense has been borderline U15 grade here at Navy and he did not have Crowley, McBride, and Compeitllo to drive the bus. Now, to be fair, in 2016 he did have a defense that was only giving up 7.5 g/gm and currently our g/gm has only increased by .6....yep .6 since 2016, and that includes the 80 second clock.

Bottom line....he is a good coach, an even better man, and I just wished he had challenged them with more creativity, speed of practice, etc. I wish him the very best.

Turning the page..
Keep in mind Wellner is not currently an Assistant, he is an Associate Head Coach. I would be perfectly happy if they just moved on from here with the staff they currently have. Drop the Associate and change to Head Coach Wellner, Camposa keep the goalies dialed in and work more on recruiting responsibilities, and Parks given the Offense keys if Wellner believes he is worthy. Otherwise, steal Phipps back. We do not need chaos with this current roster and incoming class...there is some great talent on, and coming to the yard.

100 percent agree. Need major offensive improvement in 2020, both strategic and on field. Who steps up in the midfield? Huge opportunity for many Mids.

Any practices that Lady Mids follow that should be adopted by Men's Lacrosse?

Coach Wellner's defensive genius was apparently absent this year. Ditto, for Sowell on the offensive side..both guys forgot how to coach. Instead, Sowell taught them how to turn it over via poor decisions and Wellner told the D to ball watch and slide upfield  The Navy forum posts are classic.

Follow Cindy's offensive blueprint  Yeah, maybe Loyola women's blueprint is better!

And yes Tecumseh, the new football deal solved the financial woes...and gave Chet plenty of latitude to buyout whomever he pleases..you call it "laughable", I call it fact ;)

Chst et al didn’t want the transparency the 990 provided. I thought about going to the last filed and reading it. 990s provide a lot of detailed information. Interesting they don’t file.

BS. I thought that was a great, humorous moment. Stop trying to predict the Wombat. No one knows how to predict the Wombat and what I think.

Truth! But things are not sunshine and rainbows between he and our AD either.

I am all in on Wellner, especially for the 2020 season. There is no lax coach out there that will waive a magic wand and bring gold, especially at an SA. As OCanada said “It’s just different at an Academy”. Wellner is already ‘all in’ and years past the nearest candidate.
A fraudulent intent, however carefully concealed at the outset, will generally, in the end, betray itself.

I worry about statistical offensive improvement in 2020. It will be the first time since I can remember that we won't have All Patriot League candidates on that side of the ball... maybe Daniel can be that guy. I would just hope for better overall team offense (ball movement, creativity, less turnovers, clock management, etc...)

The Offseason is always exciting in College Lacrosse - this RS move was coming but I'm not quite sure everyone thought it would come before his contract was up. Hope the Mids keep the great recruiting classes they have lined up in tact as they transition to a new 'regime'.

Army was 5-8 in 2018 and won the PLT in 2019..... The Mids are up next!

Excited and eager to see who Chet brings in.

PS - RS is gone, we need something new to complain about!
