Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
I was under the impression Syracuse is a private insitution and salaries are not publicly posted? Information for public schools like Penn State, UNC and MD are readily available. I do recall hearing that Gait's salary was around the number you noted, but I do not recall it being available online.Lax is important in NY, but that seems excessive for a non revenue generating sport.
Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
Wow thanks for the detailed response. Then I wouldn't blame someone for jumping ship at any time for such a large pay raise, have to do what's best for your family.LaxDadMax wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 2:01 pmSiena is a private college so it doesn't publish. But my guess would be head coach position would be $60-70k and assistants would be $35-$45k. They additionally get a cut of camp revenue.WLaxdad wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 1:43 pmDoes anyone have a feel for Wlax coach salaries? Like how much would a head coach salary be at a small school where sports is a low priority vs an assistant position at Syracuse?LaxDadMax wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 1:27 pmAgree that its likely a big raise and probably much more than 20k.PhanLax99 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 9:34 am My guess is that this has been in the works since late July. You can never fault anyone in life from getting a raise. My totally uninformed thought on the raise would be 20k easy. Plus you are now an assistant and not a head coach. An increase in work life balance is not something you can put a number on.
Disagree re: work/life balance. Not sure how Kayla manages her assistants, but most assistants tended to work much more than head coaches, specifically on breaking down film, opponent scouting and the evaluation portion of recruiting (where you watch every video sent to you).
Maybe going to 3 low assistants will improve work/life balance some, but most D1 assistants are probably putting in 45-60 hours per week in the fall and 75-90 hours per week in-season.
Syracuse is a public university so its salaries are public. I don't have time to look it up, but know Gait used to make $700k for coaching the women's team and now makes $1m for coaching the men. For some reason, I think Kayla makes in the $300-400k range. I would expect Syracuse assistants to make in the low $100s.
To be clear, Syracuse is an outlier. Most power conference D1 coaches in fully funded programs make between $150-$250k with assistants usually between 80 and 100k.
Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
Those salaries seem VERY high to me.
Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
You are correct, Syracuse is private. The SUNY University centers are in Buffalo, Albany, Binghamton and Stony Brook.UO22 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 3:38 pm I was under the impression Syracuse is a private insitution and salaries are not publicly posted? Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
Okay, you're in the know so tell us what they do make.
I sent Lady Laker (for those who remember her) a video clip of a meeting of some sort that was going on at Cuse years ago (quite a few) which was about underpaid women's sports coaches and particularly the w-hoops coach there (was a bit different than Boeheim's) One of the speakers congratulated Gary on his $900,000 salary as the wlax coach. There was not an ounce of sincerity there, it was meant as a dig. Lady Laker knew he was being paid handsomely but was shocked to see that number. Guess Gary was as good a negotiator as he was a player....and he was the best. If I could find that clip (and I've tried) I'd post it but I can't. No idea where to pull that up from. I don't think he made that much every year, there were factors involved with him the first couple of years but he was deservedly well paid.
Whataya got intheknow...do tell.

Here is a link. Gait made $700k as women's coach in 2015. I doubt his salary decreased before he left.intheknow247 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 6:55 pmHa! Those salaries are so bloated - neither Gait nor Treanor make even close to that much.

Coach Moore went from 80k to 360k when she left and went to Ohio St. Or somewhere in the ballpark I remember.

Thanks for the link! I do remember an IL story mentioning Syracuse's lax budget for mens/women's program was the highest in the country. It has not resulted in recent final four success for the men, but it has greatly helped the women's program. It will be interesting to see if Gait turns the mens program into a regular final four participant again and if Kayla can maintain or exceed what Gait built with the women's program.LaxDadMax wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 9:09 pmHere is a link. I'd still want a better confirmation than this - seems really high compared to the rest of the country.UO22 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 9:21 amThanks for the link! Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
I can't give you any better confirmation but I can tell you it was pretty common knowledge that Gary was making that kind of money as the wlax HC. There were more (envious) people upset about that than happy for him, I can assure you of that. It was the $900K that really set people off, but as mentioned earlier there were reasons for that and it would only last a year or two. He's Gary Gait and deserved it, he revolutionized both the M and W lax game and brought more eyes to lacrosse than anyone ever had. He not only raised the bar on the field, looks as if he might have raised the bar of the pay scale for wlax coaches too, eh?

Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
Nobody deserves anything. He negotiated whatever his pay was. Syracuse went from being a good womens program under lisa Miller to a great one under Gary gait. But Jenny levy paid less than half 900k. So not sure cuse made a smart decision notwithstanding success of women’s program…

He did all of those at every level he played at, so I'd say he deserved it.de·serve

deserves (third person present)
do something or have or show qualities worthy of (reward or punishment):
Then he elevated Cuse wlacrosse from where it was to where it is.
Sounds as if Jenny should've given Gary a call and asked him how he negotiated that.
Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
This is a pretty tough statement, pretty much like always and never.
Maddy Baxter continued to work and improved her game, including her
confidence. As a result she saw more and more playing time and was an
asset to the team at both ends of the field...middle too, leading a fast break.
She deserved more and more playing time.

Indeed she did. Intrepid Maddy Baxter. In 21 games last season, "Pippi" had 25 goals, 17 GB, 13 CT and 10 DC. Great fun to watch her particular brand of lacrosse. Any team would welcome her to their roster.DMac wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 5:13 pmThis is a pretty tough statement, pretty much like always and never.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
Gary Gait absolutely doesn’t make $900k a year. If he did, he would be listed as a top paid employee every year in SUs 990 report. Traditionally, unless there is a retirement or big severance, the only people close to or over $900k are the football and men’s basketball coaches. He had one outlier year that he made $700k and that was it. Gary was hired by Daryl Gross, who spent like a lottery winner. John Wildhack has reigned in spending and I would be shocked if the womens lacrosse second assistant make over $100k.DMac wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 12:20 pm I can't give you any better confirmation but I can tell you it was pretty common knowledge that Gary was making that kind of money as the wlax HC. Okay, it's not worth arguing about to me. I know what I heard on the clip I mentioned earlier and I know what I heard from Brent Axe's local sports talk radio show when he pizzed and moaned about it for months on end.

From your article..."Gait's compensation includes $172,756 from Syracuse University, $85,000 from IMG and $128,540 from women's lacrosse camps."DMac wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 3:14 pm Okay, it's not worth arguing about to me. Re: Coaching Carousel 2022-2023
I see that breakdown in the article but earlier in the article it says "women's lacrosse coach Gary Gait was fifth at $716,409." Seems pretty cut and dry that his salary was $716,409 since that was what was declared on a legal document. That's also in 2013 money.intheknow247 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 8:32 pmFrom your article..."Gait's compensation includes $172,756 from Syracuse University, $85,000 from IMG and $128,540 from women's lacrosse camps."DMac wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 3:14 pm Okay, it's not worth arguing about to me.
