There are 245 four-year colleges that offer Divisions 3 lacrosse programs.
There are 358 D1 Basketball programs
Today 38 teams get into the NCAA division 3 men’s lacrosse tournament
Today 68 teams get into the division 1 NCAA men’s basketball tournament
Based on this simple math if are were equal about 15% of NCAA d3 teams get into the tournament
In Men’s D1 basketball about 19% of the programs get into the tournament
This would mean that the division 3 NCAA lacrosse tournament could expand to let 8 more teams in.
I think this would help grow the game and even the playing field of college lacrosse giving more programs a chance to compete in the tournament

Re: D3 NCAA Tournament Expansion
there is a division 3 competition formula that is applied to sport sponsorship that determines tournament field size. this sets the field, and while the formula is influenced by quantity of teams, it already takes the 245 into acocunt.
an expansion of 8 more teams without more qualifying conferences/AQs would get some at larges back that are towards the back end of the top 20/25 that would knock out some of the lower-mid tier AQ's that don't get the "first round" games currently as it would just add 4 more "first round" games.
one could make an argument that adding more teams would actually hurt growth as pretty much everyone outside the T20/T25 would have their season end on the first day of the tournament.

Unlike basketball, there is a significant talent drop as you get past the top 10% of teams.
Adding 8 more teams would add an additional playoff game to most.
On the other hand, were there really 8 teams that didn’t get in last year, that could have made it past the first weekend? Maybe one or two.

D1 basketball produces a little more revenue than D3 lacrosse.

I think that the expansion would be good to get more of the top 25 teams that don't get their AQ in. The AQ for the newer conferences and teams is good for growth and even the one game experience is a memory of a lifetime for guys at those schools. That said, to make the overall tournament more competitive, the additional bids need to go to the "power" conferences and teams.

There are 125 FCS football teams, and 4 make the playoffs, a ratio of 31.25:1. With 245 Division III lacrosse teams, this gives 7.84 teams. We will round up to 8 for simplicity's sake. The top 7 NESCAC teams will get AQs, and the winner of the C2C gets the remaining bid, unless it is Kean, in which case the bid reverts to the 8th place NESCAC.

This is a crazy post. Kean will never win the C2C.D3LaxFan2 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 11:43 am There are 125 FCS football teams, and 4 make the playoffs, a ratio of 31.25:1. While expansion is good fodder for the forums and the top 25% of DIII, which is competitive, it isn't happening for a little while it seems.
First of all, ya better check your tone. I dont think you know who you're talking to. I'm Leonard Washington...I don't get butt naked for nobody!!

Cost is a major factor here. Basketball rosters are what 12-15? That’s only 6-8 hotel rooms vs lax with the ncaa travel roster limit being in the 30’s your looking at 15+ hotel rooms or double the cost per team without taking into account larger busses, meals, etc.
Re: D3 NCAA Tournament Expansion
What an odd post, seemingly ignoring the myriad of differences between D1 Basketball and D3 Lacrosse in arguing that the NCAA should use the exact same mathematical formula used in D1 Basketball to determine the number of participants in the D3 Lacrosse tourney.
I mean, you seem to acknowledge that there are significant differences between the two enterprises (money being the key difference). So what is the point of this thread?
