Disagree as far as Hopkins is concerned. It's like the other poster that came up with the Onion headline "Fill in your favorite team signs all portal transfers". Can't have everybody - don't need everybody. Hopkins, for example, loses Degnon's 41 goals and Krampf's 6 (or thereabouts) and that's it AND they are trying to pull a rabbit out of the hat and somehow trying to get Degnon's 40 goals back. I am sure Boyden is a very good player - DIII stats tend to be very inflated with the blow-outs to end all blow-outs but who comes off the field? Angelus/Melendez??? And if somehow Degnon is back? What about Collison at attack? Grimes? Sorichetti? Chauvette? Marquis? You need to develop some offensive talent that is going to be around for a while - not one year because in 25 - no more Angelus/Grimes and several others - I assume Melendez may stick around for another year but he would be a senior and he might have life intervene you don't know. With Bauer/Evans/Peshko/McDermott also around for one more year - and English hopefully on the ascension - playing time for the freshmen will be fierce. I just named 9-10 players that are not freshmen and you have about 4-5 freshmen that might have eyes on playing meaningful mintues. And you have the hole in the roster with the rising junior class created by the coaching change - so Boyden helps none of that. I don't think PM and JC don't want to go into '25 with maybe 3 experienced offensive players and a bunch of baby birds that have never really flown. I am also not sure why Canadians are necessarily a "great fit" for Crawley''s offense - if you're a good player willing to put the team first - you'll be a good fit if you're from Mars.
If you could have gotten English's brother or a proven DI accomplished middie - maybe but Hopkins addressed its biggest need through the portal as effectively as they could. Time to play the hand you have - I actually think another year of Degnon would be a mixed blessing but I can't see the basis for the appeal - he played in the 1st/5th and 8th game in 2019 - so unless Petro filed the paperwork at the time - one would think the NCAA is acctually acting reasonably for once.
He certainly struggled in their title game match up against Salisbury, who made a point to press out on defense. Tufts just couldn't match Salisbury's athleticism. Boyden had 1g and 2a on 6 shots. At UVA, he's not going to be asked to initiate offense, so maybe he slides into that Dickson role of finding cracks in the defense and finishing.

for all transfers shouldnt they be committed somewhere by now?
Depends on the school they're trying to transfer to. Admissions has a say in whether the player gets in and that office can be quite bogged down with getting in the incoming freshman class. Also, some coaches might want to delay having the player "announce" where they're going.

It's a good situation for him to adjust to the D1 game without being the scouting report priority. Even though defenders will be bigger, faster and more athletic, he won't be facing #1 poles at Virginia any more. Depending on who else is paired on top 6 offense with Shellenberger, Cormier and Schutz, he might even get a short till he proves that's a mistake.

They essentially doubled him early every time he touched the ball and forced Tufts other players to try and beat them.
I think I said this in another forum, but Boyden will be a great replacement for that Xander Dickson. Probably not as good as him, but the guy can finish the ball from anywhere and has insane hands. He was forced to be a QB type Attackman this year at Tufts even though he’s naturally an off-ball finisher/shooter. Just look at his numbers his junior year when he got to be an off-ball guy.(he put up 4G/3A against Sal that year)

Crickets with respect to Zawada and Gunty, who look like the two biggest prizes left uncommitted.
Lots of rumors around the boards that Gunty decided to enter the workforce.
I think Zawada is probably waiting to hear back from Michigan grad school as to whether he was accepted or not.
I think there is a good chance neither play for a different school next year.
Matt Gunty is done with lacrosse. Not sure where he's working but he's not playing lacrosse next year. He played the entire year hurt and is making a great call to start his career.
I noticed Syracuse has 11 recruits coming in the 23 class and 7 through the portal. That's almost half a team of new players coming in 1 year, hoping to get time. How do you successfully blend them with all your returnees to mold a team without a bunch of dissatisfaction? More than a few are likely to get less time than they expected........

It is not easy to play as a younger player on a high level team. If you are not expecting an uphill battle then you are not built for this. Outplay the guys fighting for a spot or get used to the bench. Everyone knows that the portal exists.
UVA has high rated guys sitting on the bench every year. They seem to put up with the dissatisfaction just fine. Sunderland looking at less time than expected with Boyden coming in. Dont think you will lose sleep over it.

it's 8 @ the portal as of now. might be ~14 leaving/graduated and possibly others don't carry over. 18 isn't almost half a team for almost anyone nowadays, nevermind 'cuse.
managing your roster and locker room and future recruiting is something you're taking on if you dive headlong into the portal. selling non-nc$$ tourney years isn't easy, either.
as far as individuals expecting pt... caveat emptor has been the watchword(s) for some time now.

hopkins had 16 countable "contests" in 2019. rules then (and now): no more than 30+% of contests (the plus includes the game going over 30.0%) or any in the back half (contests 9-16) + season ending, documented injury.
michigan game was contest 11. don't know if he stepped on the field for 5 seconds or was on some of their 9!!! manups. @ the time, no way of knowing he'd get injured, plus had already played in early season contests.
for maybe 7? 10? years i've tracked medical redshirt appeals. maybe a dozen, maybe 2 dozen. through those and prior... i've never seen any example of a medical given that was outside those boundaries, no matter how minor. any appeal or application would be fighting precedent, imo. and any new precedent, if that's what it would be, would potentially open the floodgates/change rules for all sports. would they do that for a john hopkins attackman? my guess is no.
i don't believe prompt ppwk filing matters (see: colin kirst). just that u have ppwk.

boyden has 2 years of eligibility
How is that? In 2021 he finished 7th on the team in goals - in 2022 he was a DIII HM AA - this year he scored a gazillion goals - isn't that 3 years of eligibility used?

d3 / nc$$ gave all spring athletes a 2nd covid year in 2021, as many played, some didn't, but it was more mega-effed than d1. not sure what d2 did.

If a team cannot find a place for a player who scored 69 goals and 88 assists for the Division III runner up, then that team has serious problems.
