Pretty ridiculous. Hunter publicly admitted these crimes long ago, paid his tax bill and the gun offense was low level. All serious and deserved prosecution, but leniency is typical when there is believable remorse. And no danger is perceived to public.

Generally understood around here though I take issue with the “minor” aspect to the tax issue. I didn’t like the game Kerry played w his Yacht and don’t think that withholding over $1mm illegally, especially knowing he used his dads position to make his career and money (which is part of the game but in an adjudication of consequences to be administered) I think that “evidence”/circumstance makes it skew towards the harsher side of things. Further I sort of find folks have to eat their own cooking such that for his general position to be harsher on affluent folks and tax cheating then he shouldn’t skate on the punishment.

All this said it’s not a big deal and certainly not the national idiocy and agenda being pushed by the snake oil salesman working up the mouth breathers into a frenzy.

But the guy is a classic definition of a recidivist who’s never been taught natural consequences so if we’re going to hammer punishment for crimes at all this scenario fits the mold IMO

And there’s no guarantee that a “road back” could not eventually happen, but it sure has always seemed extremely unlikely, at least to rational folks.

If I’m not mistaken, this 2018 Trump appointee prosecutor had full responsibility on the “laptop” matter… it certainly appears that there was nothing to prosecute in that regard… after 5 years of investigation.

Biden’s decision to not turnover this prosecutor, like what is often done with US Attorneys, avoided any valid critique of political self interested interference.
