Coaching Carousel Pre-2020 Season

Post by The Orfling »

Rick Sowell is out and a significant job comes open. Did the Navy brass act quickly because they have someone in mind? Will they go for an existing head coach and spark a game of coaching musical chairs? Will the former Navy Head coach land another head job for 2020? Could he end up back in the Ivy League?

Lots of questions come out of this move.

Is Harvard finally making lacrosse a priority? Did Yale’s triumph last season finally awaken this long-sleeping lacrosse giant? Will the Crimson finally party like it’s 1912 again?!?!?

Best wishes to Coach Wojcik.

I’d be surprised if DeLuca ended up back at Harvard—his appointment as Associate Head Coach of the Crimson didn’t seem to change the trajectory much — but who knows. Ryan Moran is an interesting name for Navy, wonder if he would be interested.

Very good list, Joe. For the Harvard job in particular, I wonder if either of Yale’s assistants (D coordinator Baxter or O coordinator Stimmel) might get a look? Familiarity with Ivy League recruiting etc. could be a plus.

I know Tillman loves Navy, but I don’t see leaving a program with which you have had so much success so recently, and have so much support from the University. Among other things, the universe of recruits Maryland can get (including via transfer) is wider than the universe of recruits available to Navy.

But who knows.

Would not be at all surprised to see Harvard take a hard look at some D3 names, Jon Thompson being maybe the most obvious potential fit.

Is Harvard caught up in the practice of hiring alums only?

Not sure Tillman leaves unless asked. I thought that was impossible last week, but with the way the terps have played twice in a row against a middling Hopkins team. If the terps continue their slide and implode in the ncaas It’s not outside the realm of possibilities It’s now about a .0001 percent chance now. Unless Tillman just wants a change of scenery.

Can’t imagine Tillman leaving Maryland for any other program. Don’t think Maryland would ever let him go without a fight. Perfect fit ... doubt he is going anywhere but stranger things have happened.

Just to be clear, DeLuca will Very likely not be asked to return to Harvard. The AD had that experience already.

DeLuca is in a good environment for his success.

Jon Thompson is a Brown alum, really wanted the Brown job but Daly was tapped instead. Scalise is himself a Brown alum, knows Thompson well.

I think he's had his eye on BU HC for awhile too.

But it could be someone totally different.

Every HC since 1974 has been an Ivy grad (Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Harvard). Not always Harvard.
