And with Gait playing there was serious competition for POY.
By the way, Greenberg won the Enners in 79. At the time I felt like watching Greenberg play was like watching a train wreck. He was disruptive.

For me, it's Del Dressel for middie...so great between the lines, played great D, was a great passer.....I didn't see him as much as you, I'm sure.molo wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 4:09 pm Since I’ve seen Hopkins play more than any other team, I’ll take a stab at their best players at each position. I am considering only players that I have seen. No disrespect to the elder statesman, but I’m confining my picks to those who played in the time period during which I’ve followed college lax, basically from 1960 until now.
GOALIE
Larry Quinn. My bias against sitting underclassmen is reflected in my choice of this two year stater.
DEFENSE
Dave Piertromala. There have been many excellent Hopkins defensemen, but the big lefty, who could bump up to pole if needed, is the best American defenseman I’ve ever seen.
MIDFIELD
Paul Rabil. The four time AA, three times first team, was primarily an o middie who took his share of wings.
My second choice, Kyle Harrison, was superb but Rabil was the team’s best player for three years.
ATTACK
Jack Thomas, whom I didn’t see as much as my second pick, Mike O’Neil, because I lived in Charlottesville for part of his career at Hopkins.
LSM
Steve Mitchell. I wasn’t going to add special positions, but Steve effectively created the position. Before him, most teams used their fourth and fifth defensemen at pole. Mitchell, with his gb play off face-off wings, his creativity in transition, and his ability to cover the opponent’s best middie, set the standard for the position.
Not an Army historian by any means, but back in the day ('69-71), Tom Cafaro was very good as well. Maybe some Black Knights or Bid Red faithful can add some insight about him.Farfromgeneva wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 3:23 pmCross generational is hard but I still think you can make a strong case for Tim Pearson and John Walker.camskidamski wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 1:00 pm UVA debate will be a good one...
Army I think can go to Brendan Nichtern
- 3x All American
- Tewarraton Finalist as a senior
- Career leader in points/assists, single season record holder in points/assists as well
#38 D from those teams - 78-80 - used to comment on these boards, actually LaxPower mostly for many years, and he swore by Federico and Greenberg.Old Lax Fan wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 7:02 pmAnd with Gait playing there was serious competition for POY.

Good call just look him up had the single season points record until last year at 85 points , still holds record for goals in season 51. Must of been real good and with the sticks they have now look out.Oldlilaxer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 8:16 pmNot an Army historian by any means, but back in the day ('69-71), Tom Cafaro was very good as well. Man, he was fun to watch. Also loved watching Ray Gilliam.....best attackman in the game, regardless of division, in 86, IMHO. Took down #1 ranked Syracuse at Boswell on a dry field. Played even better against SU in '87, but lost, 20-15.TopShelf585 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 9:12 pm Bill Miller- Hobart

Watching old game footage on Cafaro.........I've said it before, and I'll say it again......it KILLS me to know that we've got game archives from schools like Army and Hopkins and Syracuse that go back decades....and they're just sitting there, rotting. Hopkins, in particular.old salt wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 11:23 pmI saw him in the '69 & '70 Army-Navy games.Oldlilaxer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 8:16 pmNot an Army historian by any means, but back in the day ('69-71), Tom Cafaro was very good as well. Brian was injured, shoulder if memory serves, and did not fully revover the pre injury capacity he had. Still magnificent. And Brian Wood is still it for me. So fun to watch, ridiculous shot, ridiculous stick handling. Really did it all. The number of times I saw him strip a clearing D man with his great over the head check.......and three rings ain't to shabby, either.
Thanks 'Old Salt'.lorin wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 5:44 amThat was awesomeold salt wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 11:23 pmI saw him in the '69 & '70 Army-Navy games.Oldlilaxer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 8:16 pmNot an Army historian by any means, but back in the day ('69-71), Tom Cafaro was very good as well.
