If a player screwed up on the field, Schwartzwalder and Simmons would bark out "Jim Brown did it. Why can't you'? :D
I think he also added physicality to the English language lexicon, too.

Pity Jim Thorpe never picked up a stick.

Glenn "Pop" Warner, the Hall of Fame football coach at the Carlisle Indian School (PA) from 1899 to 1903, substituted lacrosse for baseball during the spring season because he said, "Lacrosse is a developer of health and strength. It is a game that spectators rave over once they understand it." It is also likely that lacrosse, a contact sport, helped prepare his football players for the fall season.[11]

Let me re-phrase. Too bad he didn’t play organized lacrosse at institutions that would have provided a forum for comparing his athleticism to standout players of the era.

Better?

Jim Thorpe was under a lot of pressure,

Top Olympic athlete, US Olympic team
Walter Camp, Pop Warner for football
John McGraw wanted him for the NY Giants

everybody wanted the guy.
