Josh Newman @Joshua_Newman Speaking to reporters a day after his program advanced to its first NCAA Tournament. Utah lacrosse coach Drew McMinn said they’re in talks with Rutgers and Johns Hopkins to play next season in Salt Lake City. Utah played at and showed well at both this season.
Josh Newman @Joshua_Newman Getting Rutgers and/or Hopkins, but especially Hopkins, to come out here would be a pretty big deal for lacrosse in this state, not to mention this part of the country. Hopkins hasn’t won anything in a while, but it remains a gigantic lacrosse brand name.
this guy covers utah sports for the salt lake tribune which I guess is the paper out there.
Johns Hopkins 2023
Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
US Lax AA's announced. Jays broke the shut out streak, though they maybe didn't get as much love I would have hoped.
Mazzone - 2nd Team AA at D
Martin - HM at SSDM

Martin - HM at SSDM
Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
They're all fairly meaningless but USA Lax Mag's are by far the worst annually
Some of those defensemen over Smith is seriously cringe
Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
No doubt. Quite surprised Martin got any appreciation at all. Not that he didn't deserve it, just didn't think it would happen.

Congratulations to Mazzone and Martin. Well-deserved.
Noticed that Evan Zinn earned HM AA at SSDM. Congratulations to the former Blue Jay.
Would have been nice to have seen Smith and others recognized, but c’est la vie.

Milliman deserves a lot of credit for Mazzone and it sends a message to the fan base about his eye for talent and approach to recruiting. Also sends a message to transfers that they can come in win, and get national recognition.
I don't remember the last ssdm we had get that kind of recognition but it's a major program achievement after all the struggles we've had there for awhile. JK has now come in twice and solved glaring positional problems in short order.
Petro's been banged around a lot and in particular for his approach to interacting with people but 2 of the big stories this spring-the revival of Hopkins and Michigan's run are 3 of his former Hopkins players.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
He has made too many winning plays this year on national TV to be denied. First the game-winning CT vs. St. Joe's then the 60-yard rope to ice it vs. Rutgers. Sometimes that's what it takes for an SSDM to enter people's minds because god knows they don't really pay much attention to them otherwise. Martin is already the all-time program leader in caused turnovers for an SSDM with still a year left to add to his total.nyjay wrote: ↑Tue May 09, 2023 12:07 pmNo doubt. BTW here's a sample of how Scott Smith's attack assignments have fared this year:
- Jackson Intrieri: 1g, 0a
- Logan McGovern: 1g, 1a
- Tyler Bradbury: 1g, 1a
- Levi Anderson: 0g, 2a
- Connor Shellenberger: 0g, 3a
- Joey Spallina: 1g, 3a (the 1g was on EMO)
- JP Ward: 1g, 1a (the 1g was on EMO)
- Michael Boehm: 0g, 2a
- Ross Scott: 1g, 0a
Shutting down Michigan's Boehm in Ann Arbor stands out a lot now given how he's played recently

Yes, ND is a tough matchup, but would you prefer Duke or Virginia?51percentcorn wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 12:31 pmI on the other hand don't think the committee did the Jays any favors with the 6th seed because it means a very likely date with Notre Dame IF they defeat Bryant and while UVA (obviously) and Duke are no picnics - Notre Dame would appear to be a particularly bad match up for Hopkins. They have throttled every single opponent except for the losses to UVA and an early season match up with Maryland. Otherwise it's been carnage across the board and Dobson with the step downs and Nick Taylor with the crease cuts not to mention the bros/the goalie/the defense don't forshadow a great day in Annapolis. I would rather take on the Maryland/Army/Penn State/Princeton pod than any section that has Notre Dame.Sagittarius A* wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 8:11 am This is a game the Jays can win if they play their game, limit turnovers, and stay focused.
It's better to be lucky than good, or maybe the tournament committee gave them a sympathy break due to the last three years of frustration.
Have at it 51. LOL
At least we don't have to play Duke again. We seemed to draw them every year no matter where we were seeded.
Anyway, PM wanted the toughest schedule possible so he should be delighted with the ND draw.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
Well again, I preferred the #4 or #5 seed so I could avoid any of them until the semi-finals. Maryland and Penn State received what many prognosticators are saying are the two toughest first round games but that's somewhat an accident of geography. Any one of the 4 teams in that "pod" can end up in Philadelphia and if Hopkins was in that mix they would have a decent chance as well. Doesn't matter now - you can only play the team in front of you. Bryant and only Bryant.Sagittarius A* wrote: ↑Tue May 09, 2023 4:18 pm Yes, ND is a tough matchup, but would you prefer Duke or Virginia?

As far as Smith - I think it's obvious I am a big fan. In terms of AA recognition I think maybe a factor is that given that Hopkins is on the non streaming channels a little more than most - his less than stellar plays are seen by more people. What I would like to see from him going forward is better decision making in terms of when to be a crazed animal and when to be a position - steady eddie player. He should not run into the back of the goal 10 seconds after a time-out - he should not run out at an opponent swinging his stick like he's in some Polynesian resort show and let the kid sidestep him and score easily. He and Hopkins named AA defenseman should not be split on a man-up double-team by a player that is not known for his fleetness of foot to score a man down lay-up. He has all the tools to be the best - size/strength/athleticism/IQ/stick skills - needs to channel the aggressiveness into better decision making IMO.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
I don't want to sound like 51 but this program can't and shouldn't be looking past anyone. I'm not sure if Bryant has more ncaa tournament experience on their roster but they won't be intimidated coming to homewood.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
There's an AA defenseman who is on TV every week and has been beaten cleanly more times than I can count in the last few weeks. Doesn't seem like they are holding his worst moments against him. Yes Smith has made a mistake or two or three this year but to me it's pretty simple: He's the top cover guy on the #6 seed (with a top 10-15 defense nationally by most metrics) and more often than not he shuts down or limits his matchup's impact in the 6v6. I've watched a lot of lacrosse this year, seen everybody's good and bad...he is flat out a better player than some of the guys on that list. Not saying he necessarily needs to be a "teamer" but not even HM? Doesn't compute with reality but then again neither does Matt Campbell still being listed as a middie (he's played attack the entire year) so gotta take these things with a grain of salt.51percentcorn wrote: ↑Wed May 10, 2023 8:36 am As far as Smith - I think it's obvious I am a big fan. As for Bryant, of course nobody is looking past them. You don't even have to go all the way back to the 2014 Cuse upset to see what they can do — they really gave UVA a game in 2021. They were LEADING that game late in the 3rd and it was tied headed into the final frame. Not sure that even needs to be questioned but 06 always finds a way

Hey '06 - this CV deserves more introduction than "Hopkins lax alumni" - From the US Hall of Fame website:
"DeTommaso, an All-American defenseman and graduate of Farmingdale High School, was a four-time All-American at Johns Hopkins, earning first team honors from 1984-86 and honorable mention in 1983. He helped Johns Hopkins to national championships in 1984 and 1985 and was the recipient of the Schmeisser Award as the nation's outstanding defenseman in 1985. He was named the JHU Team MVP in 1986, JHU Defensive MVP in 1984, '85 and '86, named to the All-Time JHU Team in 1986 and the NCAA Silver Anniversary Team in 1995. He was also selected to play in the 1986 North-South All-Star game.
He played on four U.S. teams (1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) that won world championships and was selected to the All-World team, and as the outstanding defenseman, at the 1994 world championship. He was a six-time USCLA All-Star and was selected as the club player of the year in 1989."
As decorated as the guy who coaches for that team up North.
BTW - the men's Hopkins Lax Twitter account has a picture of Patrick Deans from yesterday in full practice gear obviously participating in drills or scrimmage
Re: Johns Hopkins 2023
Expect Deans to play, though not sure if he'll get his full complement of reps. Kaufman has proven capable to fill in if needed.

he could just flat out cover also, in addition to whatever nefarious checks he may have inflicted.

Even though it was a game they "should" have won, extremely important that they did. A loss would have put them in a bit of hole, with RU, PSU, OSU and MD coming up. Go .500 the rest of the way and they're almost certainly in the tournament, which I think is very doable.
I'm thinking the NCAA tournament. If they go .500 in the reg season, I think they're almost guaranteed a bid (irrespective of what they do in the B1G tourney). Getting three more wins (whether one is in the B1G tourney or not) makes them an absolute lock for the NCAA tourney. And an NCAA bid would make this season a success (in my eyes at least).
We're in a good spot right now. Just win the next one.
