This is 1000% the far left stance, and has been since the arrival of the hippie. What changed your mind?

And you realize that this runs counter to your stance on foreign policy on these boards since the day you arrived at the forums, right?

Meddling in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq----you were cool with all of that, and that's just the short list. The much longer list comes at your insistence that we HAD to keep the oil flowing from the ME using our military.

And you have just this year asked us to meddle in Taiwan's affairs, arming them, and I quote "like a porcupine".

Did someone hack your account?

Yes, American arrogance. Since 1961, and that's ONLY for this specific organization.
well, we can call it "arrogance" or we can see it as a previously bi-partisan belief that democratic values promoted and adopted throughout the world would be and is in America's national interest.

We have considered this promotion important in the competition for which systems and ideologies would be preeminent in the world, including with communism for many decades and more recently with religious fundamentalists, specifically radical Islamic fascism.

The idea that nascent or faltering democracies do NOT require "bolstering", including assistance with anti-corruption efforts, the establishment of strong judicial systems, freedom of the press, civil rights, etc didn't use to be really a question.

Perfectly fine, however, at least IMO, to be a bit critical of America's own faltering on many of these dimensions ourselves...we could darn sure use some "bolstering" ourselves from time to time!

What is fascinating is to see supposed "conservatives" suddenly think this is all wrong...when applied to countries devolving towards White Christian Nationalist Authoritarianism...

This mindset led to Korean and Vietnam war. Not a great outcome, if you ask me.

But we've also backed fascists, as I'm sure you're aware. Iran in 1953. Putting facsism in from of Democratically elected leaders because of (insert dumb, made up policy-wonk theory invented from whole cloth.)

We're still paying the price for that brilliant move.

All guided by American arrogance. Trying to understand why Old Salt has suddenly realized that we do this here in 2023.

mmm, big difference between promoting democracy and going to war. That said, pretty sure the South Koreans are glad we helped them. Vietnam was pure debacle, the south weren't ever actually a democracy. Big error in not understanding the players way, way earlier.

But yes, supporting authoritarians has pretty much always had major downsides, no matter the short term benefits. That said, whole bunch of Iranians would have preferred a secular tyrant to the ones they've had in the past 4 decades. But tyrants aren't the answer...promoting democracy makes a ton more sense.

The problem has been that we don't stick to that...oil...whatever...

Yes. They HAD a democratically elected leader. The US an UK backed a coup, to get rid of him. We're still paying the price for that stupidity, 70 years later.

Georgia is a mature stable EU democracy?
I thought that was where you were complaining about a heartbeat earlier...well, it certainly is interesting that the Georgian protestors successfully overcame the Russian sponsored attempt to stifle democratic institutions if supported in part by Western sources.

Or are you saying that Hungary is a mature stable democracy??? Nope.
Nor is Turkey.

Heck, even our staunchest ally in the ME is struggling to maintain its democracy...but looks like the citizens may be successful in rejecting the authoritarian moves of its right wing Prime Minister.

"protect democracy"? In Vietnam???

Our leaders peddled the domino theory re communism, which we definitely were fighting, but it wasn't in support of democracy there. Unfortunately.

Korea has become a pretty darn solid democracy.

and yes, we blew the Iran situation badly...lots of errors like that throughout our history.

Read what I post rather than what you project.
These are the nations listed in the USAID release I linked :
Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia

The White Christian Nationals in Israel are undermining democracy there.

You don't get to point to earlier posts if you're going to play this game of "read what I wrote". Because if we do that? You hit us for "putting words in your mouth".

You keep doing this. And yelling at your fellow posters that are bending over backwards to have a conversation, and to NOT make assumptions as to what you mean, and to respect your thoughts.

Stop doing this. Please.

You hate America.
Our meddling in the internal affairs of other nations causes their citizens to hate America.

I clearly said I'm referring to mature stable EU democracies who are our trusted NATO allies,
yet you lump them with Syria, Iraq & Afghanistan.
One size fits all reasoning.

We are doing this because they are not liberalizing as much or as fast as we are on social & cultural issues.
We fear their White Christian Nationalism.
This is liberal meddling. Nobody's more liberal than Sam Powers.

Nascent & faltering democracies ? Like the pension reform riots in France ?

Read what I post rather than what you project.
These are the nations listed in the USAID release I linked :
Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia

The White Christian Nationals in Israel are undermining democracy there.
Democracy is being challenged by authoritarianism in every corner of the world, no country is entirely immune.

You seem to not have any issue IF it's from right wing White Christian Nationalist Authoritarians. I don't give a pass to that source. You do.

Are you telling me that hard right White Christian Nationalist Authoritarian movements aren't threatening democracy in those 7 countries?

Democracy doesn't need support in those countries?...heck, we need "bolstering" here in our own country.

The State of Georgia is poised to put prosecutors under the thumb of its highly partisan legislature, with the explicit threat of firing a prosecutor investigating crimes committed by the leading candidate from that party. Sounds like what the citizens of Israel, including the military, took to the streets to stop in Israel.

Israel has its own brand of right wing 'religious' authoritarianism, corrupt at its core.

Those EU member NATO allies are not democracies ? They need to be "bolstered" by the USA ? American arrogance.

We do. Here's what you posted, all by itself. Every word.

Our meddling in the internal affairs of other nations causes their citizens to hate America.

Please.
You stop misrepresenting my posts when you reply. Read the links in the post you quoted when replying.
They clearly state the EU/NATO democratic nations I was referring to. Not the nations you referred to by name.

I ask again. Do you have a problem using USAID funding to influence internal affairs in the EU member NATO allies named in the link I posted ?

Georgia or Israel were not listed. Nor was Turkey. You brought them up as diversions.
How did you feel about Turkey's alleged attempt to interfere in our internal affairs via Mike Flynn's unregistered lobbying ?
