Yep. It’s a terrible phrase. I mentioned a few years ago that if we invested in our people early on we wouldn’t spend so much on housing people in prison, could have lower policing expenses and have more productive people paying more taxes and in increase overall productivity of the population. We are being sub optimized as a nation. Cradleandshoot called it handouts and a lack of parental responsibility…..oh well.

Let's just say that my hometown, Baltimore is not "defunded", either on a cost per resident, share of total city budget, nor # of police per resident...and yet...damn liberals.
This, btw, is what a policy wonks mean by "defund the police". They mean: take the money we're blowing on police and jails, and INVEST in your communities and your kids. If you do that? You won't need the doggone jails.
And again, I agree it's a stupid, stupid way of phrasing it.

Re: Is America a racist nation?
I have not been lectured to by the forum brain trust in a few weeks. It is time to invite myself for another verbal beatdown. There is a new ad on TV excoriating the tobacco industry for marketing menthol cigarettes to the black communities around America. The tobacco companies have not been able to advertise or market their deadly products since the early 70s. I don't know they can target any specific group of people. They distribute their cancer sticks to stores that sell them to whoever chooses to smoke a particular brand. When I was in the service the vast majority of black soldiers smoked Newports. The vast majority of white soldiers smoked Marlboros or chewed worm dirt. The warning labels on the side of the packs are not specific to any race. If you smoke em they will eventually kill you. I'm guessing the objective of these ads is to shame black people from smoking menthol tobacco products. If you must smoke be more like your fellow white smokers and switch to Marlboros. I'm sure my fellow posters on this forum will enlighten me why I am confused about this. My instincts tell me there is a lawsuit against big tobacco coming down the pike. Those folks at Zippo need to be held accountable as well. They not only manufacture a devise that allows cigarette smokers to light up... they make it windproof too.
We don't make mistakes, we have happy accidents.

Re: Is America a racist nation?
I was being facetious with that comment. There is a big push to ban the sale of menthol tobacco products because they are popular with many black people that smoke. Nowhere in the TV ad is quitting smoking altogether even mentioned. IMO people choose to smoke what they want. Yes there are many products that are marketed and merchandised on the shelves of stores to cater to their clientele. Many bodegas in Urban areas have coolers dedicated only to high alcohol malt liquors and those flavored beverages. One popular one is called LOKO. Many corner stores make big money selling " loosies" to people who can't afford a pack of smokes. My local spirit store has one section of shelves strictly dedicated to cognac with Hennessy being the most popular. That particular brand of cognac is very popular in the black community. It doesn't matter what color someone is to the folks that run these stores. You give your customers what they want. There is a new trend with flavored vodkas. Ciroc is huge into that product. I don't know many people who like wild cherry flavored vodka. There is a huge market for the stuff and I'm pretty sure that target group is under 30.Seacoaster(1) wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 8:51 amInteresting. Re: Is America a racist nation?
“In 1964, federal regulators barred tobacco companies from advertising to their key youth demographic. That meant no advertising on college campuses. No handing out free loose cigarettes to people under 21. "It's then that the industry began to pivot aggressively towards targeted marketing in Black communities," said Wailoo.”
"A lot of Black periodicals, like Ebony, became so dependent on tobacco advertising, that they were silent of the devastating impact of smoking in the Black community," he said.
“And the push went beyond just imagery in magazines and billboards. Tobacco industries specifically found influencers in Black communities — Wailoo said it could be a barber, a bellhop — and gave them free samples, to build markets surreptitiously.”
“According to a 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 85% of Black smokers preferred menthol cigarettes.”
“The FDA had banned flavored cigarettes from being manufactured or sold in 2009. But menthol cigarettes slipped by because of a split in the Black Congressional Caucus -- many of whom looked to campaign donations and support, said Wailoo.””
“According to the FDA proposal, the menthol enhances nicotine's addictiveness.”
Marketing around Marlboro is no different…..

Interesting, who enforces the ban?Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 9:31 amMenthol products were banned in Massachusetts a few years ago.Seacoaster(1) wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 8:51 amInteresting.

Just curious where you get the notion that the ad of Public Service Announcement (which I haven't seen) means "If you must smoke be more like your fellow white smokers and switch to Marlboros"?

The marketing has the same footprint in every convenience store. If you look at the cancer racks behind the counter the merchandising layout is almost always the same. Marlboro products on the top shelf, Newport products on the shelf below. All conveniently placed at eye level for the consumer. That isn't done by accident.Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 9:56 am “In 1964, federal regulators barred tobacco companies from advertising to their key youth demographic.
