I had the same questions many years ago (and most every year there after) and my conclusion was the realization that the people making the polls aren't taking the polls so seriously. In some cases, they're just having fun, in others they really don't care, etc. Strange though it may sound, us FanLax hacks take this stuff much more seriously than a lot of the "pros".

Seriously, how can you have Salisbury ahead of Gettysburg? The only answer is that people are too lazy to look things up. Fanlax, on the whole, does a much better job.
