I went and watched in person today. Couple of thoughts.
Both of these teams were fairly sloppy. Both of these teams are very young. W&Ls Burns and Allen are going to score a lot over the next three years. W&L started two freshman d-mids, and they didn’t need to slide to them all game. That’s very impressive. They started a freshman goalie and played a freshman close d man heavily. Future is bright there.
York. Mayer is excellent. Lots of young mids saw time but struggled late in the game. Kennedy is not there anymore. That is obvious.
W&L seemed to stop sliding all together in the second half. York really struggled with that. Mayer was the only guy who could produce and the matchup between him and Hubbard was very even. In person it was very obvious that W&L was more athletic overall. They ran by Yorks ride with ease once they settled in and probably had about 5-6 chances to score and only connected once.
Both of these teams are likely to improve and looked more like top 15 caliber teams than top ten caliber today. Lastly it was clear that York was really hurt by this being their first 4qtr game. Ursinus screwed them, their fitness failed them in the fourth quarter.
York 2023
Re: York 2023
Just a minor correction. York played 5 middies the entire game (well maybe #9 got a run). Only two of them were freshman and they didn’t see the field the 4th qtr or OT. So it wasn’t youth mistakes. 14 was hurt and limping. Hind sight, there should have been more subs in the 4th to give the starters a breather. Just first game mistakes. They will get better. But York has three very tough games coming up.InsiderRoll wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 7:34 pm I went and watched in person today. Couple of thoughts.

I don’t put much blame on the d. They played well. The offense turned it over so much, that the ball was on the York D side most of the second half.
If York doesn’t make just one of those mental mistakes in the second half, they would have won.
With all that said. W&L was more disciplined and looked good the second half. They are a good team.
Re: York 2023
It certainly felt that way at times, but in reality, W&L was far from scoring on the majority of their possessions. They scored 11 points total. Not sure what the final tally was for possessions or shots or shots on goal, but I'd say it was more like 20%. Aside from the countless turnovers in the 2nd half, York stopped scoring and couldn't seem to throw and catch there towards the end. They had a few opportunities to end the game, but didn't. First game for them, so I'm sure they'll figure it out. After all, it's February and we're a long time away from the playoffs.LaxFan1991 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 6:09 pmAn overall sloppy game by both sides, very hard to watch. No composure from either team.valaxfan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 3:47 pmGreat win today by the Gennies! Have to disagree, first half, yes, Generals looked out of sorts but made the changes at half, won the second half and looked much better than York, especially in the 4th, at games end and thats when it counts. Congrats to Coach Gene and staff for making those changes.

Re: York 2023
York had only 13 shots on goal, not a game winning formula. The freshman goalie made 3 saves for W&L. He will be fine, looking forward to a stronger game from him next outing with Catholic. The two freshmen Ssdm for W&L Beatty and Cohen were outstanding ( game balls) today and will only get better as the season goes on. I don’t believe any of the W&L midfielders scored today??? W&L wasn’t quick to slide in the second half and was better when they didn’t. Face offs were solid on the day. Can’t say they played well in the first half, they didn’t. York certainly helped W&L out with numerous turnovers in the second half but credit W&L for taking advantage of the situation and made York pay for those mistakes. Lots of very young freshmen and sophomores playing big for the Generals in this one, 1st year Boyd in the cage, 1st year Ssdm Beatty 0-1, 1st year ssdm Elliot Cohen 0-1, 1st year D Datz, Soph’s, Burns 2-1 Allen 4-0, Jack Elliot, Ryan Barringer
Re: York 2023
I rewatched the 4th qtr. Here is why York lost.
York possessions in 4th and OT
shot and save
Shot off pipe hit back of goalie on rebound
TO from good check
TO bad pass
TO bad pass on clear
TO bad pass
TO bad pass on clear
TO missed shot with no backup behind cage
TO bad pass on clear
TO missed catch
TO bad pass
TO missed shot with no backup behind cage
Overtime
TO Bad call from ref. York pushed into crease on loose ball and called for crease violation
TO bad pass
So the final 12 possessions of the game were turn overs
7 bad passes
1 missed catch
2 poor shot decisions
1 bad call
1 good defensive play.
You can argue that two of those bad passes were caused by good defensive play. So 8 unforced turnovers at the end of the game.

I also felt like I saw ALOT of York’s wide shots turn into turnovers with no one positioned / ready to chase.

Re: York 2023
The good news for York is these are easy fixes. They already know this. It’s not like they don’t have solid players. They just made mental mistakes. I feel good about this team. They just have to get through the first month with confidence. Then play strong in the mustang classic.
Re: York 2023
If you’re blaming playing a game 10 days later for the reason the team seemed gassed in the 4th quarter, you’re delusional. Legs feed the wolves, get those boys in shape so they can play 60+… if they can’t, then play a deeper bench, but kind of a lame excuse to blame ursinus for York being out of shape.InsiderRoll wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 7:34 pm I went and watched in person today. Re: York 2023
Lots of chatter here how York gave the game away with turnovers. They did turn it over a lot but credit W&L for scoring 5 straight by making plays when they had the opportunity. When W&L had the ball in the 4th York couldn’t stop W&L. If W&L had even marginal goal play the win wouldn’t have been that close. W&L played a better game
Re: York 2023
Haha. You're clearly a loyal W&L Fan!
W&L had the ball most of the 2nd half. York clearly stopped them on quite a few occasions. W&L had 39 or so shots, plus other possessions where they did not get a shot off. So, since the score wasn't 50-10, I'd say York did a pretty decent job of stopping them. They were just 2 stops short.
If they even had marginal goal play? Are you saying the W&L goalie played badly? York had 13 shots on goal, with 10 going in. Not a great save percentage, but he's a young guy from what I hear and he'll be fine. In every game, if your goalie makes every save you would win and it wouldn't be close. I don't think you have to go out on a reach here. Regardless of how or why, W&L capitalized just enough to get the W. Congratulations to them.

No one said W&L was bad. But as I mentioned. The final 12 possession were turnovers and only 2 could potentially be because of defensive pressure. York couldn’t hit the goal. Only 2 shots on goal the entire 4th and OT. W&L didn’t play better. They just spread their mistakes out over the entire game, vs York saving all mistakes for the final 20 minsDehuntshigwa’es wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 1:26 pm Lots of chatter here how York gave the game away with turnovers. York made plenty of first half mistakes. This game is over. I’m hoping they learn from this, and not how to spread their mistakes over 4 quarters, but how to make less of them.Jumbo wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 1:47 pm No one said W&L was bad. But as I mentioned. A short turnaround till Wednesday and Ursinus will be flying high, ready to take on the world after their big win. York needs to come in with a chip and ready to make a needed statement.

York will be in the mix at the end of the season and will have learned from this.DeepPocket wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 1:58 pmYork made plenty of first half mistakes. This game is over. Is York in a rebuilding year? It seemed like there was no fire on that field yesterday at W&L. The coaching staff looked like a deer in headlights down the stretch there.ergit wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 3:15 pmChampionships aren’t won in February. is this sarcasm? First game of year. Kids made some mistakes. Rebuilding year? Was W&L in a rebuilding year last year when they lost to York by one the first week?LaxDad6969 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 4:53 pmIs York in a rebuilding year? Early season OT win is a blip. Two good teams; well coached will only get better.
York is always in the NC mix. Good to see W&L getting their mojo back. Meet again in May.

Yea, I wouldn’t put too much stock in those posts that are their author’s first or second. Usually a burner account and/or a troll job, just like those 3 random accounts that pop up every so often around the same time trolling the ODAC forum with nonsense.
