Right wing talk radio and the Trump Administration, the Big Lie, Fox deciding to become the media arm of the Republican Administration. Hard not to line up those things with the decline in trust, when the fulcrum and substance of "news" is brazen lies.
Here's an excerpt from the AP article you posted on another thread:
"False and misleading information around the case led Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to announce Thursday that based on “public reports” he was directing Family and Protective Services to investigate the mother because she has proposed “chemically and surgically altering” the sex of the child.
However, court filings show that Georgulas proposed a parenting plan earlier this month that said the child isn’t at an age where treatment with hormonal suppression, puberty blockers or gender reassignment surgery would be considered. The mother also asked the court to not allow any such treatment without both parents’ consent."
Where does Attorney General Paxton get his (mis)information?

Create the distrust then use it to your advantage
So now we’re talking about the GOP narrative to create vote suppression laws?

Fox news started in 1976?, as the trendline shows the slipping of public trust. You are better than that.
Not sure your point regarding the LGBTQ post.....I was posting that as a current event, controversial topic, on the subject, nothing more. It is why I cited the OCT and DEC links. It is far too legal to figure this out on a forum, especially being in two different states and california's new Senate Bill 107, now in practice. I'd guess this could get really messy, and in this case, seems the Mom is the bread winner as a physician, and Dad is trying to hang on to his kids.
The custody case was before the Supreme Court of Texas, which ruled against Younger. Younger had issued a petition on December 16 to try to retain his parental rights after his ex-wife, Dr. Anne Georgulas, took the boys to California.
California has a law in place, starting on Sunday, that children in that state will not be returned to their home state in the event that the home state would prevent the children from being medically transitioned to present as the opposite sex. Younger wanted the boys brought home.
California Senate Bill 107, proposed by State Senator Scott Wiener and signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, will "prohibit the enforcement of an order based on another state’s law authorizing a child to be removed from their parent or guardian based on that parent or guardian allowing their child to receive gender-affirming health care or gender-affirming mental health care."
A fraudulent intent, however carefully concealed at the outset, will generally, in the end, betray itself.

The graph doesn't show it starting to decline starting in 1976. There are no data points on the graph between ~76 and ~96.
Fairness doctrine was repealed in '87 and right wing radio followed very quickly after. Fox in '96.

I'd like to hear youth's response...confidence was rising between '72 and '76...at least from that data set, we don't know how high it actually got and when the trend line turned negative and how sharply, but repeal of the Fairness doctrine is a good bet for the turn...might have been slightly earlier, but sure makes sense that would been the beginning.
My recollection is that confidence and even admiration went up in reaction to the Watergate era, but there was also an undercurrent of resentment brewing as well. Nixon had tried to demonize the media, his VP Agnew made famous speeches about such, and some of that probably took hold in the underbelly of conservatism. It certainly emerged in the inception of right wing talk radio, and later on TV on Fox News.

The proliferation of "news as entertainment" probably coincides with the slide. People believe cable TV political shows in the evening is "news". I would like to see that chart include the proliferation of cable news to see if there is a correlation.
A ton going on here, based on the initial reports of him being awaken.
Really? What's going on other than aggravated assault with a hammer upon the arrival of the cops?
I can't wait to hear your theory.
Reading the twitter feed thread, clearly there are a bunch of a-holes that want to think there was a homosexual relationship. Seeing what they want to see?
Pelosi was reportedly asleep, got up and tried to reason with the intruder, managed to call the police, all while trying to keep the perp calm. Perp wanted to get to his wife, but she's not there. Pelosi not the target, but perp won't leave. Talking, cajoling, then preventing hammer from being used...until it was wrested away right in front of the police, perp no longer willing to continue 'discussion'...last chance to take a swing...
nutcase
But way uglier are those who want to pretend something else.

... I have often wondered what society would look like today if we had kept the fairness doctrine. I do remember thinking that its repeal was a real bad idea.
