2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll

Can't believe defending champion Notre Dame is being slept on like that

Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
Not sure how a team that lost 63% of its goals should be #2. Right now, I think the Terps are overrated. Means nothing, but they gotta be the least proven offense in the top 10
Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
Terps should be preseason #1.
STILL somewhere back in the day....

Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
We focus so much on how much these teams lose or bring back but it’s irrelevant if we’re projecting who’s the best team for *this* season. No, Maryland will not be as good as the 2022 Maryland team was. Losing 63% of your goals almost assures you of that. But that has absolutely no bearing on how they stack up against the rest of the country *this* season. Now if you think they should be ranked lower you can make an argument for that but you can also make a very good argument based on returning one of the 2-3 best goalies in the country, maybe the best close defensive unit in the country and maybe the best overall set of long poles in the country, still good shorties, and the best face off guy in the country, plus talent they do have on the offensive side of the ball that they still look like the #2 team as of this moment
Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
teams themselves probably aren't dying to be preseason #1. going back to at least 2016 there's likely been only 1 champ at most (umd if they were for 2017?) and at least a couple champs have come from out of the top 5.
seems like one of the most wide open seasons, probably more candidates than usual to throw helmets and pads on memorial day.

Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
Automatically handing the reigning champs the preseason #1 ranking is so lame, IMO. Can often tell who doesn't pay much attention to the sport when they do that without making a coherent argument for 2023. It's a new season — some of these teams are completely different. Transfers, freshmen, guys in new roles, coaching staffs have changed, schedules are different, injuries, etc. If you take all of that into account and still think Maryland is #1, then, by all means, rank them #1. But I've seen a ton of people this year (and every year) make the lazy argument that a team is preseason #1 simply as a carryover from the previous season and...that's not how this works? At least, that's not how it should work. Defeats the purpose. Just copy/paste the postseason 2022 ranking if that's your philosophy.
Moving on...
I'm surprised Georgetown got a #1 vote. They're an easy top 8 team, probably top 5 and maybe even top 3 but someone is going to have to explain #1 to me after a team that lost in the first round now loses, what is it, five All-Americans in McElroy, Geddes, Watson, Trippi, and Mazzone? I understand they bring in Dordevic and some other potential impact transfers, which is reason for optimism, but I feel like whoever had that vote was going out of their way to do something different.
Yale at #7 is an interesting one. Offense should be good, but what's the argument that the defense gets better? Was Fake an overall detriment? Bold argument but that's really the only one I'd buy.
I like Harvard inside the top 15. Given their youth last year I think you can project them to jump ahead of someone in the Ivy League. Wouldn't be shocked by a top 4 league finish and I'd rather be a year too early on them than one too late. Not too worried about losing their goalie. His numbers last year and in his career were good but not great.
Delaware could legit go 12-2, 13-1 with their schedule, but they'd still probably need to win the league to make the NCAA tournament. They better hope Hopkins is good this year.
No surprise that Cuse is the team outside the top 20 with the most votes. Half the voters are alums. They tried.

FWIW I had @NDlacrosse as my #1. After last year’s snub, they’re going to go scorched earth on teams. Two Kavanaghs, an elite goalie… and championship pedigree imported from Yale… get ready for the revenge tour.

Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
Going back to 2010 (just a random year picked), preseason #1 and how they’ve ultimately fared)
2010: Duke (16-4, National Champion)
2011: Cuse (15-2, Quarterfinals)
2012: UVA (12-4, Quarterfinals)
2013: Loyola (11-5, First Round)
2014: Duke (17-3, National Champion)
2015: Denver (17-2, National Champion)
2016: Notre Dame (11-4, Quarterfinal)
2017: Denver (13-4, Final Four)
2018: Duke (16-3, Runner-Up)
2019: Yale (15-4, Runner-Up)
2021: Duke (14-3, Final Four)
2022: UVA (12-4, Quarterfinals)
So, out of 12, 3 national champions, 2 more runner-ups, 2 more Final Fours. 7/12 made Final Four. Loyola 2013 was the “worst” preseason #1 in that stretch. Hasn’t been a champ out of it since 2015, but also, not sure any other spot is necessarily any more predictive. If you’re ranked #1, you’re gonna be p darn good. Interesting that Maryland has never been ranked preseason #1 under Tillman.

Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
Thing I love most about Anish’s tweet is the comment about them “importing championship pedigree from Yale.” Subtlety implies that despite coaching for a gajillion years Corrigan hasn’t established championship pedigree in his own program
Re: 2023 Preseason Inside Lacrosse Media Poll
Quint also kinda ripped into Corrigan/ND on a podcast recently. Maybe I was reading too much into it but it sure seemed like he was implying that ND's culture under Corrigan just isn't championship caliber. There's a large enough sample size to suggest that argument might have legs. They've never been a good bet. But maybe the woe-is-me, we-were-snubbed, revenge tour narrative is the thing to change that.

Because they've missed two final fours since 2011. They've lose players before. They're Alabama football. Top 5 until they aren't.keno in reno wrote: ↑Mon Jan 23, 2023 4:54 pm Not sure how a team that lost 63% of its goals should be #2. Right now, I think the Terps are overrated.
