It also has the advantage of not needing a cell phone connection for your mapping application to work when you are outside of cell range (large swaths of West Virginia). Also saves massive amount of battery power.youthathletics wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 8:46 amjhu72 - good for you to be that disciplined about your technology, just understand that it is even more complex than what is in your control. Your phone has a MAC address and anytime it is powered on ( and as Snwoden said....who knows if its even 'really' off) it is pinging a tower(s).jhu72 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 8:27 am... same here. I don't use Google Maps for driving directions either. Have a specialty APP that turns GPS on when it starts and off when it exits. The maps don't download in realtime, they are stored on disk card. I like having local control. Phone OS is Android that is open source. Bluetooth off by default, same for WiFi.Farfromgeneva wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 7:56 amYeah I’ll take the tinfoil hat when it comes to decision makers in Silicon Valley and only have location services on when I absolutely require it. Degenerates like me need to stay off the grid.jhu72 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 7:53 am... I just did YA's experiment. My Google Maps doesn't pin point me at all. I have my GPS turned off at all times by default. I am currently sitting out in horse country with the nearest cell tower 2 miles away. When I start Google Maps it centers wherever the APP was last centered.RedFromMI wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 7:38 amYou might well have microcells inside the capitol complex in order that all locations inside have signals. That would allow a better location. Also, while you might be talking to a single tower at a time with a phone, the communication process is always trying to find out which cell tower has the best signal, so you can use some of that data if saved to get a somewhat more precise location - but not down necessarily to within yards...jhu72 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 7:23 amGPSyouthathletics wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 6:00 pmSIDEBAR: ...just open your Apple or Google Maps on your smart phone (unless you have the jitterburg )and it'll pinpoint you within yards of your current location.
This is worth a watch, there are plenty more technical videos out there, but this this gives a quick overview
When on the run from authorities the phone is trashed, buy a burner and keep it in a shielded bag. Use it no more than a few times, trash it and buy a new burner
Once, actually, if you are calling any number you've called before. Machine learning is really, really good at "cracking" these associative puzzles.
Better yet would be to borrow someone's phone for incidental calls, i.e. "my battery just died, could a use your phone to make a quick call?"
Oh, and don't trash your registered tracking device. Just leave it somewhere and have someone use it muddy the waters. And that "hockey puck" you carry in your car to pay tolls? Don't take that. Steal some license plates, the plate readers are everywhere (those odd looking things on most municipal vehicles, including but not limited to LEOs -- ain't public private partnership grand) gathering the data for commercial data aggregators. Or don't drive. And don't use your debit or credit cards.
Here's a little challenge: travel more than 100 miles and stay for more than one week without leaving any "tracks". I'd be curious how many people on the AT (Appalachian Trail) or national or state parks are hiding out. Plausible excuse for living "off the grid" for an extended period.
Remember this case?
"July and August 2018
A body is found: Two men hiking in Big Cypress on July 23 find the body in a tent at Nobles Campsite, about 5 miles north of Interstate 75's mile marker 63.
Detectives find hiking gear, two notebooks and about $3,640 in his tent. He did not have a cellphone, credit cards or any form of identification."
