Nothing to do with lacrosse,

I just read where Smoky Joe Wood received an honorary
degree from Yale, which I did not know,

1985 - Yale University graduated more than 3,000 students and awarded 12 honorary degrees today at its 284th commencement.

Among those honored at a ceremony attended by more than 14,000 people were the former Senate majority leader, Howard H. Baker Jr. of Tennessee, the opera singer Frederica Von Stade

and ''Smoky'' Joe Wood, a Yale baseball coach for many years and a pitcher who won 34 games for the Boston Red Sox in 1912.
Joe Wood was awesome, have read a lot about him, lived a great life.

I had forgotten that -- I remember it happened while I was an undergrad. I was a Red Sox fan and hadn't known about the Yale connection until the honorary degree. One of the greatest sports nicknames of all time. The president in 1985 was still Bart Giamatti, notable Red Sox fan (Google "The Green Fields of the Mind" -- beautiful essay on baseball) and I assumed he helped pick that particular honorary degree winner. There were some other great honorary degree winners during my time there -- Maya Lin, who submitted the winning design in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial design competition while still an undergraduate, and Paul Newman (Yale Drama School grad) stick out in my mind.

Very nice early pick-up for 2024 by the Elis - looks like the top ranked goalie in the class - pretty impressive group of schools that he was considering:

Howard Baker? Well, that sullies the award.

Thanks for posting lax3 — definitely a good commitment to see on the board for Yale. I think there might be goalie a who committed to Army who is ranked even higher (in the IL top 10), but to get a top 20 goalie commit (even with all the uncertainty of IL rankings) is great news.

After starting the season with two draws (thank goodness the NCAA still allows those), the Yale men's soccer team beat 10th ranked West Virginia in Morgantown.

Some changes to the oching staff, with Colin Nesdale promoted to Offensive Coordinator and Matt Dalton joining as Volunteer Assistant: https://yalebulldogs.com/news/2022/9/16 ... stant.aspx
Given the personnel available, OC would be a fun job.

Last year, Yale's fall ball plans were announced rather late, then changed given Covid concerns; hoping for some news soon.

Alumni games at Reese on Sept 30 (women's at 5 pm, men's at 7) might give you a chance to wander into Tsai. I'm hearing Oct. 15 or 16 for standard fall ball scrimmage, but don't know where or against whom.

Very interesting how many early recruits Yale is looking in ... is this a change from prior years?

Shay is notorious for having a strong handle on identifying the players he and his staff think have the skills and toughness to mesh effectively with the culture of Yale lacrosse that they have created in New Haven. Word has it that Shay's pitch is mostly about how hard the recruits will have to work to be worthy of playing time. I suspect that the staff is more than willing to lock in those players who fit the culture and are willing to put in the work whenever they are ready to commit.
