Just let them stream into the US, roam free via catch & release, until we dump enough cash on the corrupt leaders of their countries, in the naive hope that things will improve enough in their home countries that they won't want to come to the US. That will never happen.
How long does this continue ? So long as we have catch & release, what's the motivation to stop ? How many millions more can we absorb ?
They're passing up asylum in Mexico. It they were legit asylum seekers, they'd accept asylum in Mexico.
They're economic migrants, coming to join friends & family already here, so they can send back remittances for more family members to follow.
How & when does it stop ?
Is this our immigration policy ? Just admit anyone who can make it to our border to tell a tale of credible fear, then just disappear into our undocumented population of millions ?
Lots of criticisms. No solutions. This is the same problem Obama encountered late in his term, which he could not correct. It's just grown as our economy has improved & the pull factor has increased.
Should not have to wait for comprehensive reform. Close the asylum loopholes & reduce the pull factor.
Then when the flow is stemmed, see how much border security we really need & rationalize the process to legitimize those already here.

I agree with both quoted statements.Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 7:52 amFollow the law until new laws are passed. Until then, follow the law.
The asylum laws are being used in a way never intended. IMO, asylum to anyone who arrives should be ended, period. Here I agree with Trump and the hard right. Unfortunately, Trump and the Rs are incompetent. They should have pushed this through when they controlled both the House and the Senate, ending the filibuster in the Senate if that proved necessary. But they didn't have the foresight, competence, and balls to do this. The Ds will never ever agree to anything like this, and now control the House, so that window is closed for now. It may re-open in 2020 if the Ds cannot come up with a coherent story of what to do with the continually-arriving asylum seekers.

Obama tried putting kids in cages. It didn't work -- the courts stopped him. The kids in cages photos that generated so much attention were from 2014.
Follow the law ? Watch the uproar when ICE starts tracking down & deporting the thousands of "asylum seekers" who blew off their court dates & are staying here illegally. Declare a national emergency & federalize the National Guard squads to apprehend them with an ICE agent.

Re: Who is supporting the immigrant caravan?
Trump has attempted to detain asylum seekers until their claims are adjudicated, rather than catch & release.
The courts have blocked him.
Trump has supported the legislation that would close the asylum loopholes.
Both of those things would reduce the pull factor for bogus asylum seekers & stop the surge.
No wall, no sensors, no more CBP needed.

What about the rest of the plan? So far, the WH have been more about fear and misrepresentation that actual results based on sound policy.

The Flores settlement is not law. It's a decades old court settlement that did not contemplate the current volume of families & minors that need to be detained & adjudicated. 20 days is an arbitrary, unrealistic limitation, given the volume of child migrants & the adjudication back log.Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 1:32 pmYou mean the courts have ruled that many of the actions are unlawful. Re: Who is supporting the immigrant caravan?
That has nothing to do with the surge of asylum seekers at our southern border. Immigration caps are irrelevant. If credible fear is established, asylum seekers must be admitted to await adjudication. If granted asylum, they stay -- caps nothwithstanding. If denied asylum, many don't show up for their deportation hearing. The adjudication process can take years.Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 2:54 pm https://www.afsc.org/blogs/news-and-com ... -explained

You are focused on the asylum seekers....which is an issue.
For me, there is plenty more to this issue then just those actually fleeing vs those trying to game the system.

We need to decrease the pull factor for bogus asylum seekers, before we can rationalize our immigration process, based on what we need for the long term, including a way to accommodate legit asylum seekers, not economic migrants rushing to get in before the asylum loopholes are closed.
Close the asylum loopholes, then we can see what we actually need for border security & to thwart the cartels.
While we welcome legit asylum seekers in an orderly fashion & help them resettle & find work (legally) where they are needed.

We need to reduce the asylum pull factor, then see how much wall we need & where.
The wall is also symbolic -- to Trump voters & aspiring migrants.
Here's a couple good explainers on the asylum loopholes :

Now it's the mess that Trump created. Yell at him. For the love of G8d, yell at him just once. Just one time during his term, blame him for not doing something that not only is he responsible for, but what he campaigned on fixing. And we're two years in, and all he's managed to do is make the problem worse, and to blame the Dems.
So don't ask us how to solve the problem. Ask Trump. It's his job.
