D1 Men Rankings
Re: Inside Lacrosse rankings
After today, PSU is still #1, Penn and Maryland traded spots so Penn is now #2 while Maryland is #3, OSU dropped from #5 to #7 (Loyola and Cornell passed OSU), and Rutgers jumped from #20 to #15. Computer Rankings.
Re: D1 Men Rankings
In the Coaches Poll, the Terps actually moved up to #2, so that must have been the epitome of a "good loss". Although, I imagine part of the Terps rise was due to the fact that UNC and Penn, who the Terps have beaten both won big game.
Penn State unanimous #1 this week, as they should be.

Re: D1 Men Rankings
It is sort of interesting how the Coaches Poll has a big break between #13 Syracuse (190) and #14 Lehigh (133) or 57 points - almost 3 points a pollster.
If you take the top 13, there are 5 possible AQs amongst them - Big Ten (PSU), Patriot (Loyola), Ivy (Yale), Big East (Denver), and CAA (Towson).
This would leave 8 at-large schools: Maryland, UVa, Duke, OSU, Penn, ND, Cornell, and Syracuse.

1-13 are relative perennial powers. Though with exceptions, 14 down are not. Whether consciously or not, pollsters have prejudices. Anyway, that's my theory.Cooter wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2019 10:53 am 1 Penn State (20) 400 8-1 1

PS Penn is too low. 2 of their 3 losses are to #1 and #2. Their third loss is to #6 and... they beat Villanova, Cornell, and #5 Yale.

Early in the season one poster described Penn as a cupcake. I wouldn't have even call Furman a cupcake in January. but now, the 1-8 Pallidans have squarley joined the few, the proud few.

There's going to be some teams strong enough to play on Memorial Day that get left out in 2019. An upset or two in Conference Championships and the Selection Committees tough job will be even tougher. I think more so this year than in the past.Cooter wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2019 11:15 am It is sort of interesting how the Coaches Poll has a big break between #13 Syracuse (190) and #14 Lehigh (133) or 57 points - almost 3 points a pollster.

At 3-0 and alone in first place in the Ivy League, Penn is certainly a probable AQ.Cooter wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2019 11:15 am It is sort of interesting how the Coaches Poll has a big break between #13 Syracuse (190) and #14 Lehigh (133) or 57 points - almost 3 points a pollster.

Johns Hopkins ranked 11th. I think that’s about right.

Re: D1 Men Rankings
I don't know why anyone would really want to predict the media poll as it is a little spurious.
That being said Denver is actually 6-4 now. Given that Villanova beat Denver out in Denver, and Villanova also has beaten Yale. I think Villanova should probably be ahead of Denver.

Besides Cleveland, who HAS Denver beaten? When someone other than Towson wins the CAA, will it finally be a two team invite conference?Cooter wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 10:38 pm I don't know why anyone would really want to predict the media poll as it is a little spurious.

SO? Would it matter if Denver had beaten Duke and UVA? B/c, the way you have High Point ranked, it clearly doesn't matter. Or, does it? Tigers had a couple shots at locking up an At Large.
Against Denver and Duke. Were winning both those games.
Re: D1 Men Rankings
Like it or not, the Media Poll is based on what your ranking was last week and what have you done for me lately. I am a big Highpoint fan, but their early big wins don't give them the credit they deserve.

Re: D1 Men Rankings
But, this doesn't apply to Loyola? B/c Patriot is yet another one team invite conference, but the trophy for everyone ACC (not even a real league) gets 5 at larges? Ah....good ole n$aa......the land of good loses. What has Notre Dame done lately, except lose, lose lose. Ranked 10th. Got it.
Boston U. have any good loses, or does that moniker only fit certain laundry? BU have any good wins? Army ranked?

Re: D1 Men Rankings
I think HIgh Point's losses to two teams (St.John's, Jacksonville) who have losing records and are no where near the top 20, probably holds down their ranking.

Re: D1 Men Rankings
Also, shouldn't rankings be a reflection of how teams are currently performing? We have the selection committee to decide whose overall body of work over the course of a season is most impressive. But in-season rankings should be about who the best teams are right now, IMO. In that case I think High Point should be even lower than they are. The loss to 3-8 Jacksonville was only two weeks ago, and since then they haven't exactly beaten anyone good. Duke and UVA are also very different teams now than they were in February. Luckily for High Point, a win in February counts as much as a win in April in terms of tournament selection. But for rankings, that doesn't need to be the case. I do think High Point is still one of the 20 best teams in the country, but I'd put them outside the top 15 for right now.
