The Consequence of College Football’s Transfer Craze: Coaches Are Unsure About Their Teams

A record number of players switching teams after a tumultuous offseason filled with coaching changes is presenting an unexpected challenge ahead of training camp

Laine HigginsJuly 22, 2022 8:59 am ET
Few of the changes to rock college football in recent years have had such a direct on-the-field impact as the rule changes that made it easier for players to switch schools without penalty. That climaxed this year in a wild offseason that saw so many players in the sport’s top division looking for new homes that even the coaches who welcomed them are confused about how good their teams are.

Kiffin isn’t the only coach who isn’t sure what to make of his team with training camp just around the corner in August. Some teams are overflowing with talent on paper, but it’s unclear how their players will jell on the field.

According to NCAA data as of this week, 2,242 players from Football Bowl Subdivision teams have entered the NCAA’s “transfer portal” since Aug. 1, 2021, signaling their desire to change schools. Even with 134 later withdrawing from the portal, it’s a massive uptick spurred by recent NCAA rules that eliminated restrictions for switching schools in certain sports and gave all athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic.

Despite having more new faces than ever before, coaches have the same monthlong window of time during fall camp to install increasingly complex schemes and packages. It creates a situation where, according to Alabama coach Nick Saban, “It’s also more difficult than ever to sort of predict how your team is going to develop.”

For Kiffin, it’s a mess of his own making. He embraced transfers perhaps more than any other coach in major conferences, donning hoodies with the slogan “Transfer to the ‘Sip” and calling himself the “Portal King.” He landed 13 midyear transfers and has added nearly a dozen more since February, including nine players with four-star rankings on recruiting website 247sports, in his bid to efficiently rebuild his roster after losing Matt Corral, the quarterback who helped orchestrate Ole Miss’s 10-win season in 2021.

There are as many reasons for switching schools as there are players on the move, but a common impetus is a coaching change. It’s normal for the coaching carousel to spin in the offseason, but rarely has there been as much movement at as many marquee football programs as there was following the 2021 season.

LSU, Miami and USC all fired their football coaches and managed to poach replacements from programs of equal, if not greater stature. Brian Kelly defected from Notre Dame, Mario Cristobal spurned Oregon for the Hurricanes, his alma mater, and Lincoln Riley shocked Oklahomans by taking the Trojans job. That’s to say nothing of the turnover at high profile schools like Florida, TCU, Washington, Washington State, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

This created a situation in which players at top programs, including some who once were their most highly touted recruits coming out of high school, had more reasons to enter the portal in 2022—be it to escape a team on the downswing or find a better fit upon realizing their skill set doesn’t match the new coach’s scheme.

It’s part of the reason why Kiffin was able to land several players from schools where the previous coach was either fired or stepped down, including quarterback Jaxson Dart from Southern California and speedy running back Zach Evans from TCU. Kiffin’s unusual recruiting tactics didn’t hurt either: he often drives prospects around in luxury cars and, more recently, he deploys Juice, his adorable yellow Labrador retriever puppy.

Sometimes players follow the coach who recruited them to their new destination. No team was affected more by this than Oklahoma. Shortly after Riley departed, quarterback Caleb Williams, who started as a true freshman, said he would be moving to USC, too. Riley convinced two more Oklahoma players and three five-star recruits once committed to the Sooners to follow suit.

It left behind a rather undesirable situation for Riley’s successor Brent Venables, a former Oklahoma assistant and longtime Clemson defensive coordinator. He said last week that 40% of his players “never have put on a Sooner jersey in a game before.”

“I know a lot will be and has been made of how much we lost on both sides of the ball from a production standpoint,” Venables said. He’s got plenty of questions heading into camp, but said that he is betting that the 243 starts among the 15 transfers he added in the spring will shore up his volatile roster.

South Carolina’s Shane Beamer, on the other hand, benefited from the chaos at Oklahoma. He scooped up sometimes-starting quarterback Spencer Rattler and tight end Austin Stogner from the Sooners in the portal. It’s a marked improvement from 2021, when Beamer’s graduate assistant started a handful of games, but not one that comes without a learning curve.

“There will be some ups, certainly some downs this season. But I have no worries about him,” Beamer said of Rattler this week. “Nobody is asking him to go out there and be Superman.”

He added: “Certainly, we have a lot of work to do.”

Love my uncle, God rest his soul
Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know
Taught me so well, that I grabbed that gold
I left his dead ass there by the side of the road, yeah

Is the list on this forum of who is in the portal complete? I ran into a local guy last week whose son plays and he told me he's in the portal- but he's not on the list here. Could there be 100's more?

I don't know about hundreds but probably dozens. All that's in this thread is a semi up-to-date tracker of what's been reported by the media, announced publicly by the player or team, or shared by a poster (which is not always accurate). Lots of moves are made without any of the above happening.

I feel like IL in particular was a lot more on top of notable transfer portal entries last year than they have been this year. That may at least partially explain why this thread isn't super up-to-date and we're due for an InsiderRoll infusion of random names to be added.

If I have some time I’ll take a look. I can tell you that IL was more on top of it because in previous years a coach had given IL their login. That started happening a lot across different sports so they added two factor authentication. Reporters now have to wait to get it from a source.

Bredhal is a pretty big addition to the portal. 73 goals and 77 assists last year in 22 games. Is that a typo? Those are video game numbers. Wonder why he waited so long to put his name in?

He has been in for a very long time. Has been reached out to by a lot of people and he’s not really engaged. I have heard rumors he’s more interested in playing golf at the D1 level rather than lacrosse
