Colwell’s errors have cost Hopkins two goals in less than 3 minutes.

This has as much to do with the fact that once again they have had offensive opportunities in the early 4th that they are not cashing in on.

Hopkins is scoring at a pretty good clip. I don't see that as the problem.

Live to fight another day. In the last five games, Rutgers and Hopkins were 55-55 in goals. You didn’t think the Jays were going to run away with this? Epstein, Prouty and Williams were the stars. Don’t want to face the Scarlett Knights again in Piscataway.

Thank goodness for that 6-0 start.

- Prouty is really elevating his game at the right time of year. We will continue to need that kind of play from him. But it'll be much harder next week against OSU and Justin Inacio.

- If Epstein stays healthy he could leave Homewood as one of the all-time greats. Kid is special. His feel for the game cannot be taught.

- Excellent bounce-back game for Cole. 5 pts, 1 turnover. He loves playing Rutgers.

- Strong first half for Darby, rough second half. That's becoming a pattern. Shooters figuring him out? Or does he lose confidence as the defense starts to buckle? Probably a combo of both.

- Refs blew one of the worst offsides calls I've ever seen. Luckily it didn't matter in the end.

- Outside of Prouty's play, the second half needs to be erased from memory.

Needed the win. Got the win. We're onto the Buckeyes.

Fifteen goals should be more than enough for a comfortable win.

Rutgers deserves high praise for playing hard until the end.

MVP goes to Kyle Prouty with 21 of 29 faceoff wins plus 1 goal and 2 assists.

Joey Epstein just makes it looks so easy ... 5 goals and 3 assists. :o

Cole Williams with his finest game of the season.

Ryan Darby played well, but a near-collapse of the defense almost cost Hopkins this game. :|

If faceoffs had been anywhere close to 50-50, Rutgers would have won this one going away. Coach Pietramala still has a lot of work to do with the D. Still can’t understand how Danny Jones just let a Rutgers player waltz right past him towards the net in the fourth quarter. :?:

Man-down D did a fine job today, however.

Anyway ... two down, three to go. Huge win for Hopkins! :)

They could have run away with it if they learned how to pass. All those unforced turnovers kept Rutgers alive.
Still can’t understand how Danny Jones just let a Rutgers player waltz right past him towards the net in the fourth quarter.
Or why doesn't Petro just stick a guy on Charalambides with Gorilla Glue -- 'where he goes, you go son. If he goes to the bathroom, you go to the bathroom...'

Want to watch game again.

Big issue. That has to been the most pathetic homecoming crowd ever. That was a bad crowd for any opponent in April on a nice day.

Blue Jays have won the last two weeks by putting together a couple of stellar quarters in each contest. If this squad could learn to play a full 60 minutes, they would be pretty hard to beat.

Desperately needed win gets us another month (at least) of consequential Hopkins lacrosse. For those at the game, watch the replay from the gorgeous shots of the campus, to quints discussion of homecoming, the tradition, the significance of the program at the school, the shots of the title teams honored-the first half was basically an hour long national tv ad for the program and school.

Up-
Kyle Prouty gave a performance for the ages. There have been performances on bigger stages, but that was as good as you can get from a fogo. Quint was comparing him to Ierlan by the end. Had a rough start to the year, but that was fantastic. Big answer at a position of consequence who'll be here a long time.
Epstein, he's lived up to the hype and then some. Watch the waning seconds of the game replay as he chirps at Rutgers headed to edelman.
Cole-best game of the year. 2018 cole is good stuff.

Other
baskin/concannon caught on d in the last possesions held their ground. It was Kuhns ct that took away the ball from Rutgers they never got back.
coaching staff did its job this week. Maybe their best effort of the year.
congratulations to Marr on 100 goals. Not the season he's enjoyed in the past but much respect for what he's given us.
Forry's played better the last few weeks.
darby was strong early. some awful tos
Rutgers has a kid who could play 7 years. If he's not getting a law/med/phd degree, time to move on man.

Down
Defensive meltdown late. Glad the team eats kind bars, maybe they need a mental skills coach. Defensive lapses late almost cost the season with foley et al.
DiPietro-struggles badly in limited minutes. Looks like owen mcmanus is the 3rd ssdm.
Hoping connor disimone gets a few big moments late in the season. He's well past due.

There's a lot of criticism going around recently and much of it deserved but watching this game on TV—a beautiful day at Homewood, Homecoming crowd (looked good to me on TV but maybe it was more underwhelming in person), all the alums back, the history and tradition in the air, the band playing, food trucks—there's nothing else quite like it in this sport. If I'm a recruit, seeing all that makes me want to go put on the columbia blue and black. Whoever the coach is, whoever the AD or the president is, I don't see any of that changing anytime soon.

EDIT: Attendance was 4,000—it's certainly been better for a Homecoming game but considering the opponent and how early in the month it was, not really a bad number.

DJ letting Charalambides run right by him on that goal reminded me of when Tinney ran off the field against Maryland two years ago, allowing their middie to waltz into the middle and let one fly from 5 yards out. I thought the defense played well in spurts today—better than the 13 goals would suggest—but all it takes is one dumb mental lapse for it all to come tumbling down. And there was certainly more than one of those. Can't keep happening if they hope to be playing in May.

Zinn took one shot and still had more goals than Baskin, DeSimone, Keogh, Stagnitta combined.

Congrats to Marr on 100 Gs. No small feat.

InsideLacrosse scoreboard is still showing, at 4:48 pm, Hopkins up 15-13 in 4Q against Rutgers. Hopefully they can hold Rutgers off...seriously though, is it really that difficult to update the score to “Final”?

Two Questions

Post by DocBarrister »

When is the last time a Hopkins freshman scored 8 points in a game?

When’s the last time a Hopkins freshman led the team in points?

Darby let Rutgers back into the game with that poor pass that resulted in a failed clear with Jays up 13-8. Then he let their 10th goal skid underneath his stick. Really poor 4th qtr. by GK. Close D didn’t help out much until that great double team on Mullins with two minutes left.

Epstein could easily have had 4 more assists to go with his eight points. Baskin needs to do a better job finishing.

Prouty single handedly changed the momentum of this game at least 3 times.

Coach Petro commented recently that this team was prone to “lapses” that have cost them wins. Have seen that on both O and D, but primarily on D. Blue Jays are scoring enough goals and the offensive middies are slowly improving. D is still a work in progress and the SSDMs are still giving opponents too many good looks at the net. Hopkins defense looked really good at times, but they nearly blew a huge lead today.

Still, the Hopkins team from the 2nd and 3rd quarters against Michigan, and the first half against Rutgers, can play competitively with anyone ... Penn State, Maryland, Duke, Yale ... ANYONE.

And that “other” Hopkins team? A true horror ... like the doppelgänger family from the film “Us”.

Quint said it on the broadcast this afternoon, but 2 SSMD got the most run, we saw Prouty took all the faceoffs and once again I think Hop looked like they were out of gas. I will certainly take the win, but maybe let the bench get a little run.

C Williams has started a bad habit. Everything is back in. Everything is tilted to his back side. To good of a player, needs turn his body forward... chin up! Also, needs to get back to moving his feet.

Think the math remains simple: (1) four more wins (any four wins) and Hopkins is in the NCAAs; (2) three more wins and the Blue Jays are a bubble team needing some help; and (3) two or fewer wins, and Hopkins will not reach the NCAA tournament.

DocBarrister 8-)
Doc, I disagree with you on the 8-6 outcome. If Hopkins wins 2 of the next 3, and then loses in the first round of the Big Ten tournament, I think that team is a lock. See Syracuse last season. Hopkins would have at least one (possibly two) marquee win to go on the resume, and every win except maybe Michigan would have some upside.

The six losses would be to:
Towson (likely tourney team)
Loyola (likely national seed)
Virginia (likely national seed)
Syracuse (likely tourney team)
Likely one of Penn State/Maryland (national seed)
Big Ten tourney game (probably PSU/UMCP again)

I think that’s enough to punch a ticket. Strength of schedule.
