No it was destined to decline over time not every year would be equal w Covid coming off it’s peak. Makes total sense of you think about it.

Basketball and football are being destroyed by NLI. Soon the power 5 will be breaking away from the NCAA it’s inevitable. Money is ruining college sports.
How are basketball and football being destroyed?
Google “Saban Jimbo NIL”

In short, boosters and wealthy alums are straight up paying players to enroll at their school. The richest schools, and the schools with the wealthiest and most rabid alumni bases, will vacuum up all of the talent. The midmajor schools that have been successful recently (i.e. Boise State, Cinci, UCF) are not going to be able to compete for talent. The end result is going to be the “haves” breaking away to form their own league, probably independent of the NCAA.

Not sure that this will change alignment of non-revs, but athletic department funding for them may dry up, since that funding could be going to pay for FB and BB recruits.
Are you limited in the amount you can make for your time spent working?

You know this had been happening for 30+ years right? Reggie Bush, SMU in the 80s. It’s a running joke around the south back in the day that tracking who Auburn was recruiting was simply a matter of tracking Bobby lowders personal business plane with Colonial Bank painted on it. The NCAA is just an SRO that kept it opaque and the govt out of their pockets but like every other pig who gets slaughtered it wasn’t ever enough and they blew it.
This is the disconnect point, why can’t it be both things? The athletes deserve a cut but in this current environment with no rules and guidance it will run CFB and CBB into the ground.

If someone doesn’t step in and create some order this is going to suck.
Why should it? If the “market” demands something it demands it. Like free agency in pro sports destroyed them. These are the arguments of fans that have only emotional (and unfortunately in many personal identity) skin in the game but no effort or personal capital at stake (it’s a low opportunity cost for those who devote themselves to sports fandom).

They had adults. A whole universe of college administrators, a faux SRO, coaches, alums. All these people with power and money made the choices they made and they represent the sport along with the still kid athletes.

AND…all the fans watched and loved it the way it was which speaks more about the fans disgusting indifference (along with those in charge) thereby making their claims that it’s ruining the sport and related demands of little value. Yelling from the cheap seats while looking in other peoples pockets.
Saw this posted by my cousin today:

“Spoke with a D1 coach looking for an immediate cornerback transfer, and possibly linebacker, defensive lineman! DM me if you’re interested!!”

I hope it all falls apart. Go basic model with athletic/academic money and let everyone else go play in a farm league. Set some post college money aside and lifetime free education.
Yep.

And I love that now grown men are sliding into the DMs of boys.

The worst might have to be Dabo Swinney on Tik Tok. He needs a big brother to take him out to the shed in back and shoot him..

Canyon Birch was an early commit to Army before switching to Penn State. He scored 100s of goals in south jersey in HS. Wonder if he’s someone Brecht would take a flyer on?

Surprised that Madronic hasn’t made a decision yet. Has connections from HS at Notre Dame. He can play attack or midfield. Would seemingly be a good fit there…but maybe he wants to play for a tournament team?

Birch would seem like stretch. Brecht likes athletes. Birch doesn't seem particularly quick or athletic. Physically he's not imposing. There are players in the program and incoming recruits that have more upside.

Pass, Birch feasted on the bad competition at the shore and while he is a good shooter, never thought he was athletic enough to be a bit time D1 player

Hofstra would be a good fit for Birch IMO.

Surprised not to see Hudgins snatched up yet....maybe they are sitting on it.

I’ve heard the Madronic is leaning towards hanging it up as far as college lacrosse goes. Supposedly doesn’t have much of an interest in another year of school

Recession might change that calculus.

I wish him good luck. Have enjoyed watching him since he was in the 10th grade. Excellent player.

While usually correct about shore teams, squan started playing legit schedules his sophomore year. Squan was in the group 2 final vs Chatham his freshman year, where he was a starter and had 73 points. The next years they played the likes of lakes, Bridgewater, Madison, Rumson, lawrenceville. His senior year they were the #9 team in the state according to laxnumbers. Doesn’t seem to have played enough in college to really get a grasp on who he is in the college game.

I haven't seen a ton of Birch, but Ross Scott is straight quicksilver. Not sure Birch has those quicks.

You are actually making my point, freshman year he had 73 points but only 4 in games against Moorestown, Ridge and Chatham. he had 3 points in 2 games vs Ridge and BR his sophomore year. He padded his stats against bad teams.

The funny part about this discussion is that I started it, and didn't even remotely suggest that Birch was good enough to start on Rutgers. I just wondered if they would take a "Flyer" on an in-state player who was previously highly regarded before his injury.

It's not even close. Anyone who has seen them live would never put them in the same sentence. Scott isn't just quicker, a lot quicker, he's also stronger. He can also shoot better and finish. Apples and oranges.

I have no idea about Birch's injuries and he had an incredible high school career, but that isn't translating to the D1 level.

If you have his athleticism you don't need to be physically imposing. You don't necessarily need both but you definitely need one. Scott has legs like Sequoia trees. Kid is extremely strong for his size. Add ridiculous levels of quickness and he can fit in fine anywhere.
