Some others could be transferring for their COVID year, but I don't know enough to know if that's the case or they're just done playing. Also Donovan transferring in is all but official.

Does anyone have any sense of whether coaches are still giving all their graduating seniors the option of coming back for a covid year, or if they've started to limit the number of fifth-years themselves, e.g., only bringing back key contributors?

Terps defense is going to be outrageous

Bosco coming back, Donovan coming in, Rhude (AE POY returning from injury , Sterling in goal,Lamaroux back , Peduzzi back, #1 2021 defense recruit Major back from injury.

On offense 16 of the 18 goals against BC back. Plus 2021 #2 recruit back from injury and the #1 incoming 2022 recruiting class with the #1 recruit.

Terps are poised for a 16th natty.

My experience is that 5th years can come back, but unless they have earned it, their scholarships are gone. Money is awarded annually … and I would hope most coaches try to support kids for 4 years as long as they are doing the things they need to do to be an engaged part of the team, regardless of playing time. But for 5th years, that money is needed for the incomings. Most coaches need to do some juggling to balance money for 5th years and still take care of the incoming class.

Maybe I am not remembering this correctly, but didn't the NCAA expand the scholarships beyond 12 for 2021 due to COVID? If so, did that expansion carry over to 2022 and beyond?

What she has working for her is speed and athleticism ... and the fact that the field hockey has lost many of the top athletes in the last generation to soccer and lax in the US. USA FH has had some rocky times as of late and is trying to rebuild.

I wouldn't necessarily say that field hockey is losing top athletes to soccer and lacrosse. Almost all of the best players the last decade in scholastic and club field hockey (the likes of Erin Matson, Austyn Cuneo, Mackenzie Allessie) have remained with the sport through college.

The thing is, the national women's FH team has had a poor run of form borne from a lack of stability and, frankly, a lack of a high-performance system and a lack of a national league. The U.S. women's national team has had four training homes and four head coaches since late 2016. The team failed to quality for consecutive world-level championship events (Oly 21, WC 22) for the first time ever.

As I mentioned, USA field hockey is struggling as an organization.

I would venture the players you note above picked field hockey LONG before college … and I would assume they never played club lacrosse or soccer past middle school. Here in the Philly suburbs, we are a field hockey hotbed, but with one notable exception (Margaux Paolino) in recent memory the best athletes prioritize lacrosse.

As a former D1 field hockey player, this does not make me happy, but soccer and more recently lacrosse start offering programs way earlier than field hockey. My own daughter was hooked on soccer well before field hockey was ever an option. I have 5 college teammates whose daughters all play D1 lax for top 20 programs, as my daughter did.
